  3. Sorry, topic line should read fishfinder, not fishfinger
  4. My Lowrance X-19 combo unit died and I need to replace it. I am looking at the Humminbird 859 ci hd and the Lowrance Elite 7 HDI CHIRP. Both are sonar/GPS combo units and I have done a fair bit of research on both. I am looking to buy from Cabela's as they are both on sale and have manufacturers rebates. I also have a lot of points built up The price difference is only $100.00 so I am not too concerned about the money. I would like some advice from anyone who has one or the other. I want a good solid unit that will work well and last me at least a few years. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am not dead set on buying from Cabela's, I am open to suggestions on any place with good prices. Also open to any suggestions on other units. I would like to keep the price under $600.00. Right now I am leaning towards the Humminbird. Thanks for the help. Dave
  5. My son, Lucas, told all his friends at school about his "monster" Lake Trout. He is pretty proud of himself, and I am proud of him. All three kids were great and I can't wait to take them again. I am sure Dennis feels the same way. Watching them catch fish is a lot of fun. Best part is they don't care what species or how big. On another note, I have instructed many adults on proper technique when bringing in a fish and the kids listen follow instructions much better . If you have little ones, get them out on the water or take them to a pond to fish. They will love it, and there are great life lessons to be taught.
  6. Here are some pics from the morning. We had a great time, kids had a blast. Looking forward to going again. Sent from my C811 4G using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  7. Just took a look at the South end. Open water as far as I can see. The water level is up, but not too high. Water is a little brown at the South end. Watch out for debris in the lake if you venture out. There are no docks in at South Shore Marine as of yet. Good luck if you head out, and stay safe.
  8. I should have mentioned that I have not seen the North end. It might be different up there. Sent from my C811 4G using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  9. Just took a look at the South end. Still pretty well locked up with ice. There is some open water on the East side starting near the mouth of the inlet. Lots of open water pockets near the shore. I would guess a week to 10 days before it's fishable. I will check again in a couple days. Sent from my C811 4G using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  10. Wow, that is disheartening! I am ready to get after the browns!!! Hopefully the warmer weather this coming week will put a dent in it. Thanks for the update. Sent from my C811 4G using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  11. Planer mast sold. Sent from my C811 4G using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  12. Big John Dual Planer Mast, one of the reels has a broken handle. A little ingenuity could probably repair it. Also has no mounting base. Other than that it's in good condition. Asking $80.00. Victrola set up in wood box, comes with 300' of braided copper. I haven't used it in a couple years. The last time I had it out it worked great. Asking $150.00. I have a few Twin Minnows that I would be willing to through in, if I can find them. I know the season is pretty well done, but I also have a Frabill two person ice shanty. I don't use it anymore and takes up space. All the parts are there and it works fine. No rips or cracks. It is 6' 5" tall and fits two grown men with ease. Asking $75.00. I am located in Moravia, NY. I will be in Watkins Glen on Sunday morning and I will bring them along. Please call or text Dave at (607) 351-1262 or PM me.

  16. I am a forestry consultant, I handle timber sales/harvesting, forest management and wildlife plans and pretty much any other forest management needs that landowners have. I believe Pete does the same type of work. Sent from my C811 4G using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  17. Pete, I am a consultant based in Moravia. My company name is Empire State Forestry Service, Inc. It's nice to know there are a couple other Umaine Alumni around. Two of my classmates currently live in Brooktondale, NY. They are married and he teaches at the University of Binghamton. She is a stay at home mom. Neither of them practice forestry. I have been to Alligator Lake many times, but never fished it. I fell through the Ice there at the end of November in 2002. I was trying to get a photo of an otter. We spent a lot of time riding around the Stud Mill Road area with a gazetteer and a shot gun or fishing gear. Grand Lakes Stream was one of my favorite early fall destinations. Gin clear water and a healthy population of Landlocks. Trips to the North Maine Woods and the Allagash were also a regular occurrence, at least twice a semester. I still go up there for a week every October for bird hunting. We stay on Big Machais Lake. Always a good time and a nice reunion with some old classmates. And yes I agree, Mainers are pretty tight lipped with the info. Especially if you are from "away".
  18. I remember the days of ice fishing most every weekend near Orono. Forestry students love their ice fishing. I graduated in 2003, although it doesn't seem like its been that long. We used to fish Sebasticook lake and Hermon pond. Great Crappie fishing. We used to make an annual trip to Moosehead and another to Spaulding Lake in Oakfield. The Oakfield trip was mostly ice drinking with a side of fishing. Those were some good times. Lots of ice, bitter cold, small camps in the woods, snowmobiles and I lot of great memories. Thanks for sharing your storey of the season so far. Good luck and stay safe. Hopefully spring comes early and we can get after the Ontario Brownies. 19. I have a Big John 4 foot dual mast. There is no mounting plate, and one of the reels has a broken handle. Other than that it's in great shape. I live in Moravia, NY. PM me if you are interested. Sent from my C811 4G using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  20. Took my buddy Tommy yesterday. We hit the launch at 6:00am and were fishing by 6:20. Headed out to some marks from a couple weeks ago. We did our first fish at 7:00. A 10 lb Coho on a Mountain Dew Crush Glow SD, white ITO fly, off a rigger set to 85 over 220 fow. we picked up a skippy king on a mag FLT Seasick Waddler off a rigger set to 90. Who knows how long the fish was on, we never saw the rod tip move, could have been 30 minutes. Picked up another fish off a 90 rigger over 149 on the same mag Seasick Waddler. Came unbuttoned, think it was a Brown. That was it for the day. We fished from 6:20 till 2:00, covered depths from 120 to 260. I tried a lot of various combinations of SD's and flies, and a half dozen spoons. We ran 2 dipseys, 3 riggers and a 400 copper all day. Talked to a couple guys at the launch, they had a done a little better, but nothing special. Radio chatter indicated a slow day too. I hope others did better! I am sure things will pick up soon. Good luck to everyone! Also, fleas were miserable, but that's not really news to anyone. Good luck. Dave
  21. Somehow I uploaded duplicates of a couple pics. Sorry about that, I don't get along with my smartphone. Sent from my C811 4G using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  22. Thanks for posting the report Dennis. Here are some pics from Thursday and Friday. Hopefully we can head back up next Sunday! Watch for logs and debris in the lake, there was a lot of junk floating around. Good luck to everyone. Dave Sent from my C811 4G using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  23. Randy, You got it, we all have bad days, and they really make you appreciate the good ones. Our last trip up was my best ever for Browns, went 46 for 57 the day after Easter, Djj717 (Dennis) posted it. I am sure things will pick up. I think I saw you out there, you pasted me to the inside in front of the second bluff? I heard you radio that you had a big fish on. I am looking forward to getting up there again soon. Dennis and I are doing the Seneca Lake Derby this weekend. Hopefully we can get back in two weeks. Good luck, hope you get into some fish! Dave
  24. Nice fish Barndog! I fished Fair Haven Saturday and Sunday mornings. My buddy Gary and his wife were with me on Saturday. She was a good sport, but I think she was pretty miserable. I was worried that sea sickness was going to be an issue. My 220 Islander roles around a lot when its rough. Trolled East from the chute, planning to head for Moon Beach. We picked up a 20" Steely right of the bat in 13 fow, on a firetiger thunderstick off a planer board. That was it for a while. We made it past the second bluff and turned back, due the waves and wind. We got a small brown of the first bluff trolling west on a stinger alewife set on a 9' rigger. Trolled to the chute and headed in for some golf. Sunday morning Gary and I went together. The wives opted to sleep in. We launched at 5:45am expecting it to be a good day. Trolled East all the way to Moon Beech, with nothing to show for it. We made the turn to head back and wham. Picked up a 6lb Brown in 24 fow, on a Perch pattern Bass Pro Shops stick bait off a planner board. We fished that area for a while and didn't move a rod, and motored back to the chute. We did see a lot of bait on the surface, and even a few fish chasing. We just could not connect. We covered depths from 9 to 30 fow, both days. Sounds like it was a slow weekend. I hope others did better than me. Good luck to all. Dave
