  1. My new cannons blew fuses too. It was when we were raisingseveral at once. Mechanic said it was because the wire was too small. Hank re-ran bigger wire and problem solved. So far anyway.
  2. I wedged an old credit card between the pedestal riser and under the swivel portion of the base. Better but not best option.
  3. I am having issues with my new ones too. I have twonCannon swivels mounts and two Traxtech swivel mounts for Cannon diggers. Traxxtech is solid, cannon not so much. Will swap last two out with Traxstech
  4. Which bird do you have? As mentioned, Platinum has both but not all machines take it. Fish'N Chip offers best detail but no buoy info. And, Fish'N Chip is migrating into Platinum after October. If you want the Fish'N Chip, get it now.
  5. Welcome, I am relatively new here too and from NJ. Clinton area. Are you on Greenwood? Forget about the ski's you have giant eyes in there.
  6. Marlin and Tuna in the spread Check this out. More coming weekly. My long time friend started an underwater video company. http://www.ardentangler.org/underwatervideo.html
  7. I just bought some, why not. A marine biologist once told me that alewife and blueback herring omit clicking noises out of their anal port. The clicking noise allows herring to follow each other and move about in the school. Why wouldn't a salmon key in on that?
  8. We did but it changed the action of the lure and they stopped following. so we went back. Thanks
  9. Thanks Big Dave. I just put three videos up on my site at www.ardentangler.org Most of my video kept locking up on me but I made one short video for starters. I also placed some educational jigging video from tuna fishing a couple years back. I know its tuna and not Great Lakes but the techniques and lures are the same. The reel retrieve, rods and reels as well as jigs are downsized. More to come, trust me!
  10. Speed Jigging employs the use of specially designed jigs made to slice through the water when used with braid. It was originally designed to catch Tuna 300-400 feet down. I will work on video today after I catch up from being away for 10 days. Sales calls comes first.
  11. thanks Chowder, I will look at those forums but excuse my ignorance. What is GLX forum? Speed Jigging is successful on the Finger Lakes. We use to use crippled herring and white tube jigs many years ago. When Shimano unveiled their Butterfly Jigging system some 6-7, maybe 8years ago, I was sent to LO and the Finger Lakes. A guy named Toby Wood took me to Seneca during a blow day on the big pond. Toby, my brother and I put a beating on the lakers with 84 by noon. Speed jigging caught twice as many fish as white tubes and other jigs but primarily because we were able to make more drops and retrieves than the traditional style of jigging and the use of white tubes. I will pull my data on the quickness of jigs and their fall rates from that project for Shimano. But, If I recall, it took twice as long for a white tube to hit bottom vs the butterfly style jig due to it's design. And, I got some video from yesterday. I'll work on that tomorrow. I have a ton of butterfly jigging video, if you wish to see it, I will get it on here. But it is mainly saltwater fish. Look at the technique and cross it into your way of fishing.
  12. We speed jigged Sting-0 jigs and shimano Butterfly Jigs raising well over a dozen really big browns right to the surface from deep water. Even after the cold front and shifting winds, these fish were highly interested but the fish were off. This style of fishing works for Kings and browns I already know but to see them follow right to the boat was unbelievable as water temps at the surface were 76 degrees. Ted Dobs from Lake Ontario Outdoors Magazine was in total shock. He had one on for a minute but it came unglued. I have been speed jigging kings for years and after consulting Greg of Top Gun Charters (another guy that jigs) last night, I am ready for them. we'll see if my video shows following fish. God, I hope so.
  13. Try to sell it. Who knows, someone may buy it. Time for a GPS Plotter
  14. I was using a paper clip to clear ice from the hose. As for drain, I always kept my lower unit in the water (via a in water slip). If on trailer, tilt and drain is the best way.
  15. Thanks, This has been (guiding was) my full time job since 1996. And living in New Jersey, if I was not running due to mechanical issues, I couldn't keep up with the taxes and BS that this great state throws at ya! Plus, I hate when my friends are on meat and I am side lined due to motor issues. I kiss my Mercury 200 Optimax and Mercury 90/65 Jet Motor after every trip. And sometime when I walk past them.
  16. Big Easy, 1. Marine charts are different than inland lake maps and yes, marine charts for Lake Ontario are based off NOAA data. But, competition in the marketplace and consumer demand forces some companies to build better maps by sourcing new and better data. For example, when it comes to contouring and detail on Lake Ontario, NO One can touch Navionics. Not CMAP, not imbedded maps on Lowrance and not Fishing Hot Spots. Even our Gold chart is not as contour detailed as our Fish'N Chip. What's more, I now have in place full time guides around the lake that take sonar logs so that we can build better maps and tighten things up. In key harbors such as Oswego, It matters and over time, my sonar tracks will make for better mapping along the dredged channel (that has to be left clean on a map). 2. I would suggest turning on and off certain layers on your Standard Horizon plotter and see what happens. I do not have much experience with that plotter. I would guess that it is like Raymarine or Lowrance where you can turn certain layers on to access more detailed contouring. But, keep in mind that your chart has to be able to deliver that type of content. 3. Constantly check for any software updates. These correct bugs in the system and in the case of mapping speed up the redraw speed of the chart. They can be found on the Raymarine, Standard Horizon, Lowrance etc... website. Hope that helps
  17. Adam 2000, Yes, Standard Horizon only takes a Cmap chart. Right now, the only plotter unit on the market that is "Dual Fuel" (able to run two competing chart companies) is GeoNav, a newcomer to the US but formerly owned by the current owner of Navionics. GeoNav is a prominent name in Europe. Anyway, You are stuck with Cmap. Like most map companies, bathymetric readings vary depending upon the chart your purchase. For example, The Navionics HotMaps Origina at $99l does not have as many contours and lakes as our HotMaps Premium chart that costs $150. Cmap works the same way. Then, there are maps that come built into the unit. We call those imbedded maps and they are watered down maps with older data and the quality is not so great when compared to using survey boats and getting a true bottom reading. The get the best detail on any map, buy the best chip and the latest chip out.
  18. I have run mine well into december and in temperatures as low as 10 degrees but on the ocean. The colder the air the better she runs. I do have to open the pisser hose often and I always let the engine block warm for at least 5 minutes sometimes 10 minutes before throttling up. Cold power heads and quick start up's and running hard right out of the gate can't be good. I am not a mechanic but it can't be good.
  19. I have a 2008 Opti and use the iridium plugs, changing plugs every 100 running hours. Trolled the ocean since 2008 with no issues and began trolling on the big lake so far with no issues knock on wood. But, now that my 9.9 4 stroke is on, that will end. I am not sure how manu trolling/idle hours are on the Optimax motor but is has to be around 200 hours of the 350 the motor has on it.
  20. Chowder email me the following question and has agreed to allow me to post it here in case others can benefit: Chris, several people suggested I contact you to help me get my Lowrance Global Map 5200 to load the fishing chip that came with my Gold Charts for the Great Lakes region (I have not tried loading my Gold Chart chip ).When I'm in the Navionics map choice menu inside the main Global Map menu I am unable to find a name choice that seems to correlate with the 'Fishing Chip'. I think I tried every choice that was available but I did not see any change on my map? I did purchase my Gold Charts & Fishing chip new a couple years ago from Cabelas but didn't fish Ontario much till this year so I have never loaded any of the 'plug n play' maps before. What do I need to do. I did get the Lowrance version of these chips and they are listed as compatible with the Lowrance 5200 Global Map. Thanks Chowder: Pre-HDS Lowrance units require that a map choice selection is made in the menus. Follow the trouble shooting steps found on the web site http://www.navionics.com/tshoot_low_eag.html Now...files to choose. This will all depend on the Fish'N Chip and Gold chart vintage, but most likely he will have the following files in some combination: Fish'N Chip FISH00SE LAKE HURON FISH01CE LAKE ONTARIO FISH01SW LAKE ERIE FISH-00N LAKE SUPERIOR FISH-00S LAKE MICHIGAN Gold 1G649XL LAKE ERIE & ST CLAIR 1G747S LAKE CHAMPLAIN 1R646XL LAKE MICHIGAN 1R647XL LAKE SUPERIOR 1R648XL LAKE ONTARIO 1R652XL LAKE HURON 2G177S OTTAWA RIVER WEST 2G213XL MONTREAL - ANTICOSTI 2G214XL GULF OF ST. LAWRENCE 2G215XL WEST NOVA SCOTIA Thanks for the Reply Chris. After reading your instructions I was able to load the 'Fishing Chip' by using the choice "Fishing 901 Ce". I loaded it using a "HOT BOOT" which may have been part of the problem before. I did not see any choices for the Gold Charts but I didn't have the Chart chip in the unit's slot so maybe that's why. Any way I'm going to update my unit's software w/ the Lowrance update onto a clean SD chip & take it from there. Use this in a LOU post if it will help anybody else & thanks again. -Andy
