  1. Who knows what really happened out there but I fish the cape an awful lot for tuna. I guess when tuna raise tons of money anyone will do crazy stuff. They do have a commercial harpoon fishery where a guy actually stands on a long platform that sticks out about 50 feet in front of the boat. The captains sits way up high in a tower while guys like us drive around in go fast boats and get in their way. The harpoon guy probably had it with the sporty. Anyway, they get over the pile of fish and throw the harpoon at the fish by hand. I know, crazy but cool to see.
  2. Tilting the transducer back one or two notches will certainly help track the ball. I do not have transducer video but I do have a bunch of HDS video on menu button pushing to access certain features, especially related to shading, contouring and more. visit www.ardentangler.org
  3. Navionics and Lake Ontario United have reached an advertising agreement. I am here to help answer any mapping or electronics questions that may arise. Plus, expect to see all sorts of fish catching video and educational video from me, both freshwater and saltwater as I travel through my territory. Most of my video will be on http://www.ardentangler.org so please check it out and tell me what you would like to see. See You on the Water!
  4. I have seen braid and PP fail in many cases under pressure 6" above the knot. When jigging tuna, we experienced clean breaks 6 inches above the fluoro to braid knot. Now this was with 65 pound but it happened alot. Using color coded lines and tying our own leaders, it is easy to tell that the line break is just above the knot. Many of us on the salt feel that extreme pressure is forced on that portion of the line for some reason and something has to give. In this case, the line. This has happened with 40 pound tuna and 100 pound tuna. We originally thought it was from the tail banging against the line but when we began using 30 foot fluoro leaders, the problem still remained. It would be my guess that extreme pressure was placed on that portion of the line if it was not compromised or frayed due to banging bottom. On the salt, we switched to Cortland 2 years ago.
  5. Mongo- I am surprised that Lowrance did not inform you of their latest dealer warranty service program. Roughly a month ago, Lowrance established 6 authorized dealers in North America with one in Rhode Island that will offer a trade in value for a unit such as the 522. Now, I am sure that there are time limits such as units purchased within the past 3 or 4 or 5 years but I think your 522 could fall into that program. In short, they will offer a trade in value towards an HDS unit. I would contact Deb or Russ Wood at Wood Boat and Motor in Warwick Rhode Island. Just search the web for their info. Wood Boat & Motor was the very first dealer signed onto the program and they are the closest to Lake Ontario that I am aware of. Just have your units serial number and they call help you from there. 6. Cortand master braid is another and in area shops [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  7. What is your budget? Start there? Be careful of imbedded maps. You are paying for data that is as old as the unit and not as detailed. Raymarine, lowrance and Hbirds but for various reasons. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  8. Yes, Plotter Sync. Right now only available with Raymarine, not HDS
  9. That is one way to do it. Correct, no nav aids on Fish N Chip [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  10. I have placed professional videos on my site on how to access HDS Features and Navionics Maps. www.ardentangler.org Now, is this the Fish'N Chip Great lakes or did you buy a Platinum+ chart with the Fish"N Chip built in? The straight up Fish'N Chip should automatically load and show under the chart section once the card is in the slot. If you have a Platinum+ chart with built in Fish'N Chip, your Lowrance Software version must be version 3.0, 3.5 or the new 4.0. Like previously mentioned, the latest software update has been out for a couple days now and is 4.0. However, if you have say software version 2.5, then you must install 3.0 first, then 3.5 before 4.0 will install into the unit. Unless Lowrance fixed that setp up process. To find out your software version, you must find the About section. If I recall, you press Menu Menu and click on settings. But, I think I did a video on finding your software version. If you run into issues, let me know. I will pull my Lowrance units and help you figure it out. Capt. Chris Gatley Navionics Regional Manager
  11. No worries. You can get the same coverage on phones too. Cheaper avenue If you buy the US $ Canada map app, you get all the maps we have for all waters including st. Clair Will you be at the Wilson Invitational by chance. If so, we can look at the apps there [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  12. If Raymarine is out of your range, look at the 900 or 1100 series Humminbird. Screen is great and they have an exaggeration level built into the unit. exaggeration alters structure and contours so that you can get a better feel of the piece. basically find the spot on the spot easier. And, you can add side scan etc.... [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  13. Ray Navionics Platinum charts offer the bells and whistles if you ask me. 3d imagery, shading, panoramic views and the Fish'N Chip is built in. The app is a great viewer and planner but should not replace a plotter. For one, it is not waterproof. and, I do not for see the cost of chips coming down at all. chips have the most detail followed by apps followed by scaled back imbedded data that comes with various plotter units. 14. Yes sir, that was me! The bite turned on after you fellas left. We found them after three days of near fishless days. They were under the diving seagulls in Picton Bay. Just like in the ocean. We kept seeing gold flashes right under the surface. It was different for sure. I have never used the INAVX app and I think it costs around $20 more than ours. Navionics app is less money and available for US and Canada. Our latest version offers real time wind forecasting, Plotter sync for raymarine users and more.
  15. We(Navionics) consolidated our apps. We now offer one app for all of the US including the great lakes. The latest app comes with real time wind, photos of inlets and more... For those running Raymarine c wide, e wide, e classic and g series can install a wireless router to the plotter. This allows a Navionics app user with the latest app version to plan and drop waypoints at home or away from the boat and when they get onto there boat, the information and waypoints sync to the plotter [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  16. Fat nancy's has small spools of c16 for 10 bucks in 80 pound [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  17. Skipper 19 Last year, I began working with Fat Nancy's on this very same tactic to eliminate all knots. Stemming from the saltwater side of things, hollow core has been used to seamlessly join heavy fluoro leaders to braid backing for tuna and billfish for years. We have been using 80 pound C 16 by Cortland on the Atom-ik copper and 30 pound fluoro for the business end. However, if you want to use a fluoro leader lighter than 30 pound, then you must use 40# Hollow Ace with a spliced loop and attach that loop to the copper/80# C 16. The 80 pound C 16 or any hollow core for that reason is to big for 20-25 pound leader. The fluoro will slip out. as for the needles. We use a 150 pound needle for the copper and it can be inserted into the 80# c 16, no problem. I use the 50 pound needle to insert the 30# fluoro into the C 16. When I vertical jig the kings, I have to use Hollow Ace by Shimano and in the 40 pound test because they are the only company that makes a line in that small of diameter. Hollow Ace 40# allows me to use the 12-20 pound leaders with no slippage at all. In rigging this way, the copper breaks before the junctions. When I spoke with Fat Nancy's last, he was sourcing the needles and has all of the proper gear and know how to construct the system. Good Luck if you try this sytem. It is nice with no knots. Capt. 18. hi chris, yes i did. i took my HDS into basspro and they put the proper update in and it worked fine after that. the chip is well worth the money, alot more accurate than my original basemap. thanks alot, mark Nice mark Insight mapping on Lowrance units is not Navionics Mapping.
  19. Did you find this chart yet? It can be special ordered and is available but super tough to find. send me an email at [email protected] and I can point you in the right direction. Chris Gatley Navionics Sales Manager
  20. Mark- Did you get this straightened out?
  21. Hey guys As the sales manager for Navionics, please allow me to clarify. I am in town to fish but the winds. The new fish n chip is very new. You can purchase the great lakes version. The free chart was offered years ago to introduce 1 foot contours on big water. Now, it is being updated constantly. As for premium bs platinum. Everyone looks for different things. Platinum offers shallow water views like being in an airplane and looking down in addition to so much more. If you truly want contours, then fish n chip is complete. Sit on this thread. I showed Ron and the guys from Fish307 all the chips today since we could not fish. Allow them to shed their thoughts. Fish307 will be carrying them. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
