  1. Took my buddy's boat out for her shakedown around 11 today. He rebuilt the carb and fuel pump so it was nice to see her running well and no problems besides dead battery in the ipilot remote but we had the foot pedal. Oh yeah, and we forgot a net. Lol. Anyway, we made two passes by keg creek in 34-35 degree water. Some debris, as expected, with a few large logs. Wind was NE about 5-10 but not too bad. We stayed in that 8-10' range and went 4 for 6 in and hour and a half. All small cookie cutter Browns. Best bait was the tried and true yozuri crystal minnow in brown trout. Black and gold and black and purple ss bay rats also took a fish each. Back to the streams for steel tomorrow, and hoping the weather cooperates for a trip to the Bar on Friday. 2. Lakers is what you'll catch in March. Maybe some walleye and steel mixed in, especially if you go up River. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  3. Probably Lewiston. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

  5. Is an extra 3 hrs worth it for better fishing? The West end is where it's at in the spring. The East end is where it's at in the Fall. And everywhere in the middle is a guessing game as far as time and place. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  6. Mid May is a perfect time to come up to Niagara County and get into a great mix of Browns, Steelhead, Lakers, and best of all, SPRING KINGS!!!. Many great Charter captains here. Thrillseeker, Reel Excitement, Tall Tales, Lone Wolf, Wet Net, etc. Your boys will get to do battle with the hardest fighting fish Lake Ontario has to offer, and they are so full of piss and vinegar in the spring, even the small fish feel like Giants. 7. If the smelt are in the river, so are the lakers. Light tackle and big jigs or three way rigs with golden shiners or kwikfish. What a blast!!! It's coming soon Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  8. Yeah we're right at the end of Johnson. Almost though about going out to where we saw guys on herrick that night before but with all our gear to pack up and the bite turning on we decided to stay.
  9. The main cause was strong current, flowing back to the lake. I noticed it in my line but didn't think it was that strong. I can't verify the thickness of the ice much past where I was set up but there were guys at least a 1/2 mile further then us on the back side of herricks the night before. 10. Calm, 30ish degrees, low pressure just settled in. It was perfect. Except the current was pulling hard toward the lake. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  11. I just jigged spoons and raps tipped with minnows all day and part of the night. Jigged a little over night when I woke up mainly tried to sleep from midnight to 4 am. I used a lowrance elite 7 sonar/ GPS that I had rigged up for ice. Tipups didn't produce anything after the first two days. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  12. 29" and 30". Both had about an 18" girth. Over 10#. Trophys to me through the ice Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  13. There was no warning. We were pounding fish, had my limit by 7 am. My buddy got out to pee, and saw a crack 30' behind us, and a few seconds later, it all started breaking up between us and shore. I was still in my bed jigging and had to hurry up and get my boots on, toss what I could over the first crack and react. In less than two minutes I had to abandon all my gear, grab the rope on my hut and run. I jumped 7 or 8 cracks, with the last one being about three feet, skipped my hut across and ran to the sled. Tied the hit up and hauled as toward safety. There was prob 30 other guys and girls out there and I just yelled to everybody to get the hell out of there. We were about 3 miles out from the beach Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  14. Fish are gone. Sucks because two were going on my wall. I hear ya about the wind and if it were windy, I would agree with you. But it was calm. The current however was pulling hard out to the lake. I just didn't think it was strong enough to pull apart over a mile of ice with it. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  15. Thanks bud. I appreciate everybody's outpouring of support here and on all the other forums I participate. I will gather new gear and be back at next year, maybe sooner. If you really want to help out, take a kid fishing and teach them to enjoy the outdoors like we do. But do it safely. Also if you see me out there fishing, come over and say hi. I have made some of my best friends through random fishing trips. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  16. I saved my shanty, just lost all the other important stuff. She needs time to refreeze anyway. Maybe do a trip to Oneida while Chaumont refreezes Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  17. Thanks bud. I always have respect for the ice, and will chalk this up as an expensive learning experience. When you ice fish long enough and learn to push the limits to get on the hot bite, things like this are bound to happen eventually. Most of the hardcore ice guys I know have had a bad experience or two, but that didn't stop them from doing what they love. I spend a lot of my time on Oneida and that ice can never be trusted, even if it's a foot thick. I will be on the radio show "Let's Catch Fish" with Capt Ken Strimple on Wednesday, talking about ice fishing and ice safety. I'm sure I can use this experience to help others be safe and catch more fish. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  18. 30FOW, same spot, 17.5 lbs. First day of three days and nights sleeping on the ice. I know you like ice fishing, just didn't appreciate your condescending remarks about something you know nothing about. When you decide to fish big water, I'd be happy to fish by your side. Just don't put me down until you have been there. That's all I'm saying. Bucket of eyes at the start of day two Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  19. Lol. I see your posts about fishing 2-3" all the time bud for half a bucket of 8" perch. No thanks, not worth it. Like I said, that ice was good for days and plenty thick. Just a perfect storm, so to speak, that caused it to give way. Don't be so condescending, talking about something you clearly don't understand. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  20. Not local but have been ice fishing for over half my life. It's my passion. There was a lot of locals out there too. Must have warned 30 guys to pack up as it was coming for them. There were guys 1/2 mile farther out than us the night before. And yes, I will be a mile from open water out there again as the fishing was amazing. I'll just be paying more attention to the currents and packing a lot lighter for quick removal. You know ice fishing is always a risk. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  21. Head to the Niagara bar area. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  22. Yes. Camped on the ice for three days and two nights. Was on 9-10" of ice, at least a mile from open water. The current ripped it up in two minutes. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  23. Look at the Starcrafts. Great hulls and all around fishing platform. I looked at a lot of different makes and IMO the Superfisherman is set up perfect Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  24. Saved my shelter. Skipped it over 3 feet of open water but lost all the important gear. About $1800 worth. This sport is my passion and some of this stuff cannot be replaced. Still thankful I'm alright, just really sad at the same time. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  25. What an amazing trip. Fishing was on fire and camping was fun. Unfortunately I barely got off this morning. Had to abandon all my gear and hop across the gaps as the 10" of ice we were on broke up and headed to Lake Ontario this morning. So thankful to be dry and alive, managed to alert a bunch of other people as there was no warning. One guy had to be rescued and lost his gear and snowmobile too. Scary stuff.
