  1. I mainly fish out of Olcott. It was slow for the kings. I heard the spring was hot, then it died right out. You don't suck. We all sucked. Not many good reports all year. All year, it was mainly a deep water bite. 400+ fow all year.A lot of searching. Good steelies while searching for kings made it exciting. The run at Olcott and Burt was average/good. It didn't suck. A lot of fish around the piers and harbor and up at the dam from mid Sept to end of Oct. The norm. I've seen better and worse. I agree though, the question still remains! Where were the kings all year. I also heard there was a ton of bait. We always marked a ton. Hard to compete with the real thing! We watched the kings on the graph come up in our sets, and dive back down. Some streaked from 200+ fow to rigs at 60-80 down, then go back down.
  2. Sunday 9/14/14, j plug in 35 fow at 715 am. 38 inches and 24 lbs.
  3. 35 minutes north is Lake Ontario. Try Olcott. The kings are around.
  4. Of course every situation is different. We used to have 3 guys. 2 of us could fish during the week a lot. The third met up on weekends. My boat was used. We never got into money, but talked about it. A little winnings would go to the boat and the guys present. Bigger winnings would go toward the boat, (gas, launch, etc), probably set some aside for future tournaments, the guys present would split the lions share, and the 3rd if not there would get enough to cover his entry fee and a bit more. Eg: win $2500, 3rd guy out would probably get $300. Even friends should solidify this topic, and especially not so close friends that fish with you. It turns into more of a business arrangement.
  5. I might be interested. When you figure out a price, let me know.
  6. Looks like a brown with markings of a laker.definately different.
  7. I fill my mono reels with 20lb. Fill them up. Mine have about 550 yards (1650 ft) of line each. The kings will run 400 ft, 600 ft, and even push 1000 ft at times.
  8. There's enough fish to keep it interesting. Kings browns, and steelies. By the 11th, they should be piled up in there, along with the people, unfortunately.
  9. That explains it. If you go in the creeks, bring your body armor, but you probably already know how it gets.
  10. Where you been westover25? The kings are all over, including up all the creeks, at the mouths, and some still out in the lake.
  11. Was out Friday also. Was in the boat in the bay. Hooked 7, landed 3. Rattling raps and strike king big eye shad - rattlers also. 715 pm till midnight. At 740 pm landed a 40 in 26 lber. All 3 females. My buddy was 1 for 1. 12 lb male. Nice night.
  12. I fish Olcott. The salmon run is much greater in 18 mile creek than at Wilson. To catch kings, try trolling j plugs 50-100 ft back on riggers in 20-40 fow at first light or the last couple hours before dark. You want some fun, take casting rods,I use 8 1/2' with 12 lb test, in the evening and into the night, also before dawn and into the morning, around the piers in shallow. Also in the boat, you can fish the harbors away from people. I like evenings into the night, stay as long as you can. Cast rattling raps and glow Cleo's. Rattling baits at night are my favorite.
  13. Leads can be 18"-27". Try bumping your speed up. This time of year is different for staging kings though. I fish 2.7 to 3.0 GPS speed from May to Labor day.
  14. Out this morn at Olcott. Had 15 bites. Two of us boxed out with 6 matures. 20-25 lbs.Boated two 5 lb kings also. Had 5 big fish hit and get off for various reasons. The last two were grab and gos. Never got a hand on the rod. Morn till noon or so, action all day. They were from 50-100. Lots of boat traffic. Riggers 55 & 65, dipseys 140/150/176.( my buddy felt 176 was better than 175?) All sd/flies. Didn't try a spoon today. Best big king day to date.
  15. Too much of anything is bad. Everything in moderation. Every boat is different. Different things will work for different people. Some lessons are learned the hard way too. We all go through the learning curve. It depends who is on your boat too. I have one buddy that I never have to watch or help. Some people come on my boat and it becomes so much work, but the payoff is when they catch fish or get that line screamer on that rips 400' of line.
  16. All good comments. One thing I disagree with that sabonation said. He said to put the boat in neutral for a moment and get ready to gas it. I say, NEVER put it in neutral! I do slow down a bit for the bigger ones. When you go in neutral, picture what your lines are doing, especially the dipseys!! The dipseys need speed to track. Without speed, they sink and they can flip on themselves, getting caught on its own line and therefore never releasing. Same effect as if you send the dipsey out with no tension (like new people on the boat do). The coppers sink also, as do the rigger lures, even though they should have short leaders from the ball. Then, when everything is sinking, you start to gas it, everything comes back up in the water column. You're looking for a major mess. Picture the 600' copper, running in say, 200' fow, it's down maybe 132' (22' per 100'). You have only 68' to sink to the bottom, not counting the sink rate if you turn. Neutral? Never.
  17. Here's my technique. I have a small boat. I run 2 corner riggers, 3 dipseys, one off each side and a large dipsey down the middle on a zero setting (to take the place of the copper I don't have). Usually,no matter which rod hits, I bring the fish to one side of the boat or the other. I never net off my back with the outboard in the way and the riggers are right there too. It's easy. The fish generally dictates which side. I don't care. One is the same as the other. Half the time, the fish will come in straight and you guide it to the side. The other half of the time, they dart left or right. DON'T REAL IN THE OTHER RODS! The fish goes under or over them. Only two options here. Use your partner to lift the rod and it is clear what you have to dose-e-do. It's all good until you get them close. The only issue(and only sometimes) is when the fish is coming near the corner of the boat and the guy with the fish HAS TO watch the rigger cable. 95% of the time, the fish is beat and you can drag it right past the rigger cable and right into the net. Whew,my finger is cramping from typing. Lol. Sorry,I forgot. Sometimes I bump my speed down if the fish is bigger to help the guy fighting it. Also if its big, I turn the boat slightly one way in a large arcing circle to keep the fish on that side. Don't laugh, it works. When you do, just move the side dipsey rod to the back pole holder. It will ride right over the rigger. Last, if its during a tourney, and its a screamer, I'll do whatever it takes to boat it. I have reeled in the rods and chased it. It's fun when you are fighting that screamer and you're watching your buddy sweat bringing in the rods. Ow, the cramps! Lol.
  18. Got a 25-3 king in 104 fow this morning.
  19. Olcott this morning. Lost a nice one on the wire dipsey in 95fow and landed a 25lb 3oz king in 104 fow on a braid dipsey. All sd/fly takes.
  20. I agree with antney1. 3 steelies in the lake, one in the tribs. Have to be 21 inches in both places.
  21. To all.Wes at the Slippery Sinker has always been on the up and up. He's a good guy. There has to be an explanation for all of this. He might not have your number or address. I don't know why this is taking so long,I haven't personally talked to him. He has a great reputation and I'm sure he wouldn't want to ruin it over a couple hundred dollars. He can make that in 10 minutes in the store. Try calling him again. There's got to be a reason. Good luck. Keep us posted.
  22. Wes and the Slippery Sinker are always on the up and up. That's the place to go. He's always nice and very helpful. He's just one of us guys. If you got a run around, there's got to be a good reason. Talk to him and explain your story. I'm sure you'll get your answer. Hope you get your cash. I don't see any reason he'd play games. He has a great reputation and I'm sure he won't do anything to tarnish it.
