Olcott harbor 9/29
sabonation replied to sabonation's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Yea sorry I was casting this time. Its a nice change of pace compared to fighting fish with a dipsy flasher etc. Heard guys have been doing well inside of 70 fow. Closer to shore in low light conditions. Bombers jplugs. Just what I've heard! Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
Hey thanks! Any idea where to get a split ring kit and maybe a tool to change them? I know I've seen them before. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I really like the lure but the hooks suck. Lost a fish this morning only to reel my lure in and find a hook missing. Also they rust easily and are not the sharpest for that matter. What kind of hooks do you guys replace them with? Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I've been tempted a few times to bring a tiki torch and stick it where my planar board mast goes. No idea if it works, but at least it would give the boat some character. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
To Reel or Not to Reel
sabonation replied to jicama1's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
One time we were trolling boards out on Erie for walleye when the cord ripped a rod out of the boat. We parked it immediately, cranked the board in, and luckily it never released so we got the rod back. Our dipsys and riggers seemed to be alright after this episode, however we weren't running spin docs or paddles or anything. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
To Reel or Not to Reel
sabonation replied to jicama1's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Neutral is only something i use momentarily when i cannot gain on a fish. It stops you from wearing a hole in the fish's mouth by dragging him forever.I can't speak for the copper bc I don't have a rig yet, but I've never had a problem tangling lines when I do. Its definately a fine touch though, too much either way is bad. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
To Reel or Not to Reel

I agree with this 100 percent. It is definately a judgement call. If it is a trophy fish you shouldn't take chances. However I try not to pull everything if I can avoid it. One thing I have been experimenting with is not slowing the boat down too much. Where you get into trouble is when the fish charges the boat. If this happens just have the driver speed it up a little. On those big ones you can't budge, slow it down for a second, put it in neutral for a moment if you have to, but be ready to gas it again. You don't want that fish coming in too fresh! Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
Downrigger weights
sabonation replied to bassman69767's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Anything 12 pounds and up should work. The Best deal I could find was on eBay for 15 pound weights. ( just search 15 lb downrigger weights) They were 2 for $50 or 4 for 100. At 25 per ball you can't beat that. They should go nicely on your cannons which have a 20 lb capacity. We used to use 8 pounders on lake erie too but anything over 60 down has a ridiculous amount of blowback. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
I usually use 50 lb mono all around. Fluorocarbon has no stretch at all and definitely should not be used with wire dipsys. Its great between flasher and fly bc it gives the fly more action, but on meat rigs you want a slow rolling action anyhow. No sense in leadering a spoon on a rigger. That's 2 more knots and two more swivels that could potentially break. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Wire Diver numbers verified with Smart Troll
sabonation replied to Matthew's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I don't think anyone is disagreeing with him just to be rude? It was really helpful and interesting at that! But there are many variables that are uncontrollable in any experiment. Like how do you explain someone bumping bottom in 100 fow with a diver if the max depths are much shallower? i always heard that 300 out on a 2.5 setting would get you down to 100 but kind of doubted it. Does it really confirm the depth? Sometimes I'm sure, but maybe there are other scenarios where they go deeper. We can all learn from the discussion. Why bother posting if there's no conversation or debate over it?? It seems as if he did a thorough job, but if there's one thing I know about fishing is that nothing is ever constant. Finally received mine today as well. I agree, why tell us you are going to mail it 2 days later when in reality its a month later. In fact it was not very busy at all in July; few boats were even making afternoon trips. I hear that over the weekend they ran out of parking at the marina. But oh well all is resolved!! Just trying to put some of the logic together? Sent from my DROID RAZR using Lake Ontario United mobile app
