  1. Fuel tank conclusion I found on Amazon a fuel cap replacement by Stens, the 125 - 112 model which fits my tank perfectly. The selling point was that it had already been noted in comments as fitting another fisherman’s Honda tank. Thank you everyone for your assistance. jim
  2. Thank you all for your comments. Kelch did get back to me. The guage is not cleanable, planned obsolescence unfortunately. I am rather surprised by this! I am going to follow MCF’s advice and replace it with a Sceptre tank guage. The bulb and the tubing are still good because I spray them with silicone every year due our cold. And yes I will replace it as soon as I have to. I acknowledge the tank looks dirty on the outside but it is really good shape.
  3. Ok returned to Lake of the Woods. The guage is made by Kelch Corporation of Cedarburg Wisconsin. It’s the number 2 model. See the enclosed picture. I have also emailed Kelch for advice. It will be interesting to see their reply.
  4. Thank you this is helpful. Going to the lake tomorrow to get more information. If I can replace with another company’s fuel guage I will be very happy.
  5. The tank is for an 8 hp Honda I use as my kicker. The clear plastic disc I am fussing about is in the top black part . The disc is read when the guage is vertically placed and screwed into the gas tank. Wish I had a better picture. The disc unfortunately is not visible lying on its side. Going to try and get a better picture this weekend. My logic is if dirt can get in there then why can’t I clean it somehow. All assistance is appreciated.
  6. I wish to apologize this post should have arrived in this old boat - my bad, must be frustrated!
  7. The clear plastic is too dirty to read fuel level. I don’t want to be stranded out of gas because I can’t read the fuel level. Canadian dealer says I have to buy another outboard tank because this little plastic dial can’t be cleaned. I find it hard to believe that this guage can’t be dissembled and cleaned then put together again. Does anyone have any ideas? Or advice? thanks jim
  8. A thought about wire humming I see in Florida that certain charter captains have split a tennis ball and wrapped with duct tape to place it around their downrigger cable to reduce wire hum. Has anyone tried this?
  9. My apologies, but I figured it out. Going thru old stuff, sorting, throwing some of it out.
  10. Discovered I have 2. Unfortunately I can not open them or understand how the tension is set? Could someone advise me with a video or diagram on how these blessed things work? Don’t want to break them. Have always used spring powered releases. thanks jim
  11. Not trying to be controversial but I have some concerns. I wonder if others share the same. These batteries have a lot of potential but I remain unconvinced. I understand they are prone to sudden fire if banged a bit and do not weather extreme temperatures very well - hot or cold. I hear in Florida car owners have been requested to park their vehicles always outside due to the sudden fire phenomenon. Then there is the cost. I don’t we have seen yet “economies of scale” which should lower price. What are your thoughts ? jim

    Baffled

Re Baffled’s Hidden Leak My Lund Rebel sprang a leak after many years of use. Nearly lost it at the dock! The cause was the plastic bilge pump intake developing a crack over time. Look hard at all of your plastic fittings. Years ago my last boat an I O had continual water seepage. This time the cause was a small otter biting the rubber bellows at night. Very frustrating. Nothing seemed to work to deter it. Old bilge plugs also can be a cause because the rubber degrades over time also. Years ago one of our know it all lake handyman chose to travel across the lake in spring , in his aluminum boat, figuring the ice couldn’t hurt it. The result was a hole in the bow from the boat being forced thru the ice. Hope this helps.
  13. Thank you jim
  14. This may seem ridiculous but I would like an answer. Never had a line counter reel before. Can I load my new line counter reel with more than 100 feet of line and still have the line counter show only the amount of line that has left the reel? For example , if my reel is loaded with 200 feet of line can it still show on the line counter only the 20 feet that I have released. Can my reel be loaded up with 200 feet with the line counter set to zero? Hope this all makes sense. jim
  15. Thank you for posting the pictures Yankee Troller, very helpful.
  16. OK but does anyone have concerns about the release fraying the line, be it mono or braid? I use the Scotty release and understood that one should always wrap their line with rubber bands to prevent this. Hearing from others on this would be really interesting. Or is this overkill on my part!
  17. Some thoughts and questions Can’t you switch your Perko from 1 to 2 or to both while running? Please advise. The suggestion to colour code your battery leads is a great idea. My 8hp Honda charges my main battery thru a circuit block that connects to my electric rigger while trolling. Seems to work really well. How or what do I need to change my manual planer board mast system to electric? Getting tired of cranking. And lastly I am using an older Minn Kota battery charger to charge my trolling motor batteries from inside the boat. Should I trade in this charger for one of the new Minn Kota precise charger series? Is there an advantage? jim
  18. thank you jim
  19. Thank you, Looking forward to the pics jim
  20. Greetings all dog lovers, It looks like Lake of the Woods will be low this year and our dock will be high. So our Lab is going to have difficulty getting in and out of boats. Does anyone have any ideas? Have you built something like a gang plank? if so could you post a picture. I don’t want to lose my fishing buddy. Thanks jim
  21. Thank you, very happy with two spin n glows received from you. jim
  22. Does any one know the pound test line size used in Gambler Rigs? Also is line flouro or mono
  23. This memory still bothers me. I am fishing for lakers on Lake of the Woods. It’s a blue bird day with only one solitary black cloud far off in the sky. There is lightning being sent straight down from it. It’s coming closer , straight at me. I start to feel a bit of a headache. The water seems to change colour to a gray green. The lightning is coming closer, too close, so I decide to flee. The cloud followed me all the way home (a couple of miles) spitting lightning and then it just disappeared.
  24. I have mentioned this before but I think it bears retelling. Bob and I were in a musky tournament on Lake of the Woods. We were trolling, long lining 10 inch Jake’s. All of a sudden my line went skyward - then Bob’s followed. We looked up and there was a huge eagle with our Jake’s singularly hooked in each talon. We reeled and pulled it in and then somehow turned it upside down and it quieted down. Bob released the Jake’s while I kept a paddle in front of that beak. The eagle flew off half in the air and partially bouncing on the water to perch later high up on the tallest tree nearby. Quite an experience!
