  1. The way I see it , we can't change what happened in the past .

So my goal is to help out where I can to make future fishing both lake AND trib as good as possible . Which was my intent from the begining of my involvement . But I soon learned others intent was different from mine .

I will take this one Sam....

The Genesse raised steelhead for many many years... And for many many years, the project fell on the backs of the same Lake anglers. Fast forward to a few years ago..... The DEC gets influenced by a hand full of people ( non lake anglers) to lower the creel limits of steelhead in tribs as well as the lake. The new creel limit was adopted with much opposition from the Lake guys. So now if people catch more than 2 steel, #3 has to get tossed back... Even if it's dead... Illegal to keep #3... And steelhead tend to not make it when you bring em in on junk rods or from deep depths....

Lake Anglers made a very good argument that fell on deaf ears.... And the new regulation went through...

So after a vote at the ( then ) Genesee Charter Boat Association meeting... It was unanimous that we cease raising steelhead... I mean it was Lake Guys who did all the work anyway  and got a regulation jammed down our throats.

So we have been approached many times since then to start raising steelhead again... We would love to... But only when the Lake Creel limit returns to 3.

Not alot to ask, since it was our sweat and bull work that has made this program possible from the beginning....

The simple solution... Bring it back to 3 silvers ( including steelhead) and we would 100% raise them right next to our kings.

Since I  bought our cottage and got involved at Sandy about 8 years ago, I was surprised at the enthusiastic volunteer base .

I was at a meeting where we learned about the pending creel and size limit change a few years back  . Of course there was some pushback from some of the volunteers . Sandy only has 4 pens which would be just enough for the Sandy allotment of Kings . We were going to borrow one from another port ( which will remain nameless ) but when the head of that port found out steelhead were going into it , they said no way . Kind of like taking your bar and ball and going home . I also heard that some Captains said they would kill every steelhead they caught out of spite .

I lost a lot of respect for some people that day .

Anyway , We put our steelhead pens in Sat and are getting them sometime this week. There was a Great turnout of volunteers . Next year we will take as many steelhead as we can handle . And maybe a few kings as well 😉

And on a side note , a lot of lake angler MF the trib guys , so why would they show up .

  3. On my rigs I have experimented  with everything . I liked the atomic trebels but I always come back to the Eagle claw LS 374 . They hook well . Caught many fish with the treble down a kings throat . They also penetrate the boney mouth well and hold well . Sometimes they hook so well I break the hook getting it out .

I use a 1/ O . I feel the trebles with the hook bent back in to the shank ( like the atomics ) hold better after the fish is hooked but miss hits .

And they are cheap . Perfect size for size 28 spoon replacement,  2/0 for mags .

  4. Got about 8 perch today . 6 were keepers . Saw a bunch of guys yesterday on Edgemere fishing Long Pond . This one was biggest .

  5. Anything on the water is priced astronomical . Houses being sold for 2 to 6 million $ . They level them and put a 3 to 12 million $ house on a postage stamp size lot on  a canal that attaches to Naples bay with access to the ocean  . I saw boats , lots of them that dwarf anything in LO.a lot of big center console. One that had  2 600 hp outboards  . I saw houses on Naples bay up to 50 million . My nephew sells real estate so he kind of knows . If I did not see it with my own eyes I would not believe it .

I saw boats from the Keys up washed up on rocks .  Naples  did not get it as bad as Ft Myers .

  6. Just got home from a 9 day ride to Key west and back . Down the east coast of FLA and bak up the west with stops in between. Saw a lot  . Those pics are my nephews boat he made from scratch from carbon fiber.  Its 30 ft with 2 jacked up 300 hp mercs . It tops at about 110 mph . Weighs in at about 1600 lbs

The other is a new one he is working on and he has orders for 17 more . He also is making custom racing parts for merc motors . I was impressed .

Took a boat ride around Naples bay . A lot of dead fish floating from the Red Tide. It made us cough. Saw a 42 ft center console with 4 400 hp outboards . The money down there is absolutely insane .

And the best thing , I never wet a line

  7. The question was trolling with or into the wind . Wind causes waves and current . So I feel the better question is with or into the waves . If there is breeze with a small chop , you can troll any way you want and direction relative to wind and current is probably most important . But if it gets a little snotty or gets to the point of you are ready to pull lines and head in , having a stable fishing platform able to get a stable speed is probably most important . So with or into are my best options . Trolling sideways to waves pretty much sucks . And you are going have to fish into it at least sometime , so master it and make the best of it .

Also IMO , fish , especially lake fish , kings and steelhead in particular , use current to there advantage probably more than we know . They have no problem maintaining and holding position in water of there choosing that has  nutrients and baitfish plentifully . This is historically proven.  .

Most springs , most kings are west . Summers they are midlake , and fall

( at least after they stopped raising kings at Calidonia) most are east . If they just got pushed around by the prevailing west to east current , the best king fishing would be on the east end and we know that's not the case.

A lot of guys ask what spoon or flasher or dipseys or whatever . But presentation as stated above is the most important thing . And that comes a mostly from boat control .

  8. There is a difference between a light breeze and a 3 ft chop . I see it as either going with the waves or against  . Trolling sideways to the waves is uncomfortable and unsafe .

I speed up on turns to get back in line.

If there is a west wind and I hookup and turn around to get back to my waypoint , it can take what's seems forever . Then I get past my spot and turn around and fly back past it  in half or less the time it took to get back. while maintaining my down speed . You can be a mile or more  past the waypoint by the time you land the fish

To be good at this salmon trolling thing  , you need to be able to catch fish going into the wind .

On a good chop , I drive  . You sometimes have to kick the speed up to maintain a heading and keep your lines straight . Mt dipseys seem to shine on those days . When I drive I turn around and watch to make sure they are behind the boat .
