  1. Well practice with them and it won’t be on paper. 🤔👍
  2. A flare serves as a night time or daytime visual distress signal that can be seen from long distance over water. Primary use is night though. Find yourself broken down at night trying to get a boats attention a mile away you will be happy you have it and expired flares make good training .
  3. Saturday June 22nd is Marina Safety Day at Treman Marine Park in Ithaca. There will be boat inspectors on site issuing inspected stickers by the United States Coast Guard auxiliary. Given increased enforcement from other agencies it would be a good time to have boats inspected and labeled as inspected. There are also educational classes planned through out the day. I will publish to the site the Agenda for the day when it is complete. The agenda and fliers have been added to this posting. 4. If there is enough interest I would be happy to arrange a special Lake Ontario United Finger Lakes courtesy inspection day with our vessel examiners in Ithaca. We provide a sticker that lets everyone know the vessel has already been inspected and should result in a free pass on it from anyone seeking to stop or bother you at launch. We do this as a courtesy from the United States Coast Guard auxiliary. We do travel around to marinas doing it on Cayuga from time to time as well. We could set it up at the launch ramp at Treman Marine Park...
  5. This is a great app everyone who goes on the larger waters of the Great Lakes, finger lakes, and costal areas should have on their phone... besides emergency contact information it also has an emergency button that gives your exact gps coordinates to help in your rescue.... 6. See the above posted chart for New York State by lily depends on boat size and questions are good other people learn whether they post or not they are in column of visual distress device
  7. The finger lakes are connected by the canal, and thus count as navigable waters of the US and fall under the United States Coast Guard AND the State in which the body of water resides. If not connected via the canal the lake only is under the state laws.

  10. Dec I believe had some funding cut or aren’t slipping a boat... and are riding with the sheriff boat doing their checks from that platform. If I find them this weekend I will get the scoop...and advise what I find...
  11. So far they have been giving warnings and having operated a charter for two and a half years on Cayuga the DEC have never asked me to stop trolling they have come alongside and required we hold up fishing licenses and our catch and pfds. These folks have always been respectful and professional. I met the troopers and found them professional and kind. I observed their launch inspection and found it to be the same. The other-side of this argument is that people regularly out of ignorance do stupid things then they and the USCG are called to rescue or recover the bodies. When if we had prevented an issue with a safety check or a patrol a life may have been saved. I believe our work saves lives. We sent multiple oblivious kayakers back to shore this weekend kayaking above 60 degree water with no pfd aboard and no whistle. End up in the water at that temp and you will be in trouble quick. As would a boater. Unfortunately some freedoms get sacrificed for safety...in my opinion militant anger over it is misplaced... be called out to recover the bodies of someone’s loved ones and a broader picture may come into focus ... The point of my post was clear as just a heads up in hoping people that hit the water this year would take some time to review their gear and the regs and have a safer boating season... with the added incentive that others will be watching at increased levels... safe boating
  12. I would pay good money to watch 😂
  13. Hand held flares or flare gun one or the other required yes
  14. Just a little heads up to the wise...the New York State Police have decided to start having a very active presence on the Finger Lakes starting this year. They are doing boat pre launch safety and registration checks, they are stopping boats on the water for checks, and they are conducting law enforcement searches. If you are putting a boat in the water on the Finger Lakes this season I advise you to be in compliance with all New York Boating and Registration laws, make sure you have flares with current dates, distress flag, fire extinguishers, pfds for all on board, dewatering device, sound producing device, and that you not be out drinking and driving the boat. You should also have a first aid kit. Kayakers need a whistle and have a pfd on or available. They have started slipping a boat in Cayuga and trailering to other lakes regularly. Free safety inspections are available through the USCG Auxiliary base located in Ithaca on the inlet and we send people out periodically to different marinas as a courtesy inspection. I would hate to see any friends on here fined or ticketed. I personally am quite happy to see it, as I see seriously dumb and reckless stuff on the water too often. It is always a good idea to take some time to do your own safety check each season test your bilge pumps, make sure your horns work, and many of your boats are not equipped with marine radios when they should be, get a portable one if need be so you can reach out for help....there is also a USCG app now for smart phones it has an emergency contact button that gives you your immediate gps location and ways to contact for help. Be safe out there please...and have a great boating season...
  15. I find both entertaining I’ve been told you want real fun run a downrigger with a fly rod and stop after hook up
  16. Not to revive the jigger vs troller because both can be successful but as a captain taking people out on Cayuga I routinely follow other people’s results and the days where I don’t do at least 50 percent better than someone who went out jigging is very few and it is very normal for me to haul in 8-12 pound fish that fight well and have a diversity of species but I believe both can be successful and it is about what you enjoy and after that it’s about improving your skill at finding and presenting proper lures... less about method more about skill of the fisherman Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  17. I run 30 lb line to flasher/spin doctor and I run 50lb fluoro or 30 min leader material not straight line from spin to fly use 50 for the way it stays un kinked. Fly back 2.5 to 3 times length of flasher
  18. From a fellow guy in northeastern pa ... you might look up by walkenpaupack just stay away from first class marine better they should name it no class marine there are other options up there you might try Moore’s outboard service in Ithaca he rebuilt a 250 hp engine for me and did ok ..don’t know if he does inboards or not there is a guy in Dickson city on business 6 the son is pretty decent they are a tracker dealer the old man is a troll stay away from that ... what ever you find better take a big dose of patience this time of year everyone is slammed
  19. Ill pm you Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  20. Pole and line have little to do with what you described. As the post above says, a good treble hook, don't ever set the hook, and slow and steady reel to the net with as even pressure as possible. Trout mouths are pretty soft and tear out easily. I have had many people pull back and reel down like you might do another type of fish, this just opens the hole wider allowing the hook to go free if you let the line slack.... if you use dipsys a good snubber will help prevent pull outs as well. My 2 cents... typically my charters land 70-90 percent depending on the skill of the angler and their ability to follow instructions...once in a while I get someone incapable of following basic instructions and I watch fish swim away laughing...
  21. Yeah I love them... especially when a 10000 pound boat is going 40 mph.. but also great at troll speed single engine can keep me at 1.5 or so
  22. Lol best investment in electronics you can make next to a really solid sonar system
  23. Looks good when we are hauling at 40 mph makes a loud whipping noise though
