  1. I would pay good money to watch 😂
  2. Hand held flares or flare gun one or the other required yes
  3. Just a little heads up to the wise...the New York State Police have decided to start having a very active presence on the Finger Lakes starting this year. They are doing boat pre launch safety and registration checks, they are stopping boats on the water for checks, and they are conducting law enforcement searches. If you are putting a boat in the water on the Finger Lakes this season I advise you to be in compliance with all New York Boating and Registration laws, make sure you have flares with current dates, distress flag, fire extinguishers, pfds for all on board, dewatering device, sound producing device, and that you not be out drinking and driving the boat. You should also have a first aid kit. Kayakers need a whistle and have a pfd on or available. They have started slipping a boat in Cayuga and trailering to other lakes regularly. Free safety inspections are available through the USCG Auxiliary base located in Ithaca on the inlet and we send people out periodically to different marinas as a courtesy inspection. I would hate to see any friends on here fined or ticketed. I personally am quite happy to see it, as I see seriously dumb and reckless stuff on the water too often. It is always a good idea to take some time to do your own safety check each season test your bilge pumps, make sure your horns work, and many of your boats are not equipped with marine radios when they should be, get a portable one if need be so you can reach out for help....there is also a USCG app now for smart phones it has an emergency contact button that gives you your immediate gps location and ways to contact for help. Be safe out there please...and have a great boating season...
  4. I find both entertaining I’ve been told you want real fun run a downrigger with a fly rod and stop after hook up
  5. Not to revive the jigger vs troller because both can be successful but as a captain taking people out on Cayuga I routinely follow other people’s results and the days where I don’t do at least 50 percent better than someone who went out jigging is very few and it is very normal for me to haul in 8-12 pound fish that fight well and have a diversity of species but I believe both can be successful and it is about what you enjoy and after that it’s about improving your skill at finding and presenting proper lures... less about method more about skill of the fisherman Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  6. I run 30 lb line to flasher/spin doctor and I run 50lb fluoro or 30 min leader material not straight line from spin to fly use 50 for the way it stays un kinked. Fly back 2.5 to 3 times length of flasher
  7. From a fellow guy in northeastern pa ... you might look up by walkenpaupack just stay away from first class marine better they should name it no class marine there are other options up there you might try Moore’s outboard service in Ithaca he rebuilt a 250 hp engine for me and did ok ..don’t know if he does inboards or not there is a guy in Dickson city on business 6 the son is pretty decent they are a tracker dealer the old man is a troll stay away from that ... what ever you find better take a big dose of patience this time of year everyone is slammed
  8. Ouch
  9. Ill pm you Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  10. Pole and line have little to do with what you described. As the post above says, a good treble hook, don't ever set the hook, and slow and steady reel to the net with as even pressure as possible. Trout mouths are pretty soft and tear out easily. I have had many people pull back and reel down like you might do another type of fish, this just opens the hole wider allowing the hook to go free if you let the line slack.... if you use dipsys a good snubber will help prevent pull outs as well. My 2 cents... typically my charters land 70-90 percent depending on the skill of the angler and their ability to follow instructions...once in a while I get someone incapable of following basic instructions and I watch fish swim away laughing...
  11. Yeah I love them... especially when a 10000 pound boat is going 40 mph.. but also great at troll speed single engine can keep me at 1.5 or so
  12. Lol best investment in electronics you can make next to a really solid sonar system
  13. Looks good when we are hauling at 40 mph makes a loud whipping noise though
  14. I had just finished setting up for departure Sunday and thought the lighting was kinda cool and shot some photos of our ride ready to fish thought I would share... Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  15. Not a bad idea...I will be putting up a comprehensive video on the uscg aux website for ithaca a cold water presentation that included a video of people in water about that temperature as a test and followed their symptoms over time..it is quite educational...have some editing to do on it but it will be up likely in a week or so on our YouTube Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United

  24. You are not crazy...i have found that a high percentage of the suspended lakers in cayuga have coloring often as bright as a brightly colored brown and a high percentage of them were natural spawn not stocked... all of the brightest colored ones I have caught were natural spawners. The exception being I found them on the bottom during october...I did not track everything I caught over the last couple of seasons...and while id like to think I have the discipline to do so and it would be interesting I probably dont. Other things like clients conversations and finding and landing fish take priority. I do know I caught between 250-300 lakers last year on my charters and paid close attention to whether they were clipped or not. I brought one up with a lampray on it, a few had scars but not many...when I would go shallower and work bottoms for browns I would invariably snag alot of lakers that were smaller in the low 20 inch category and be shaking them off... like rustyrat I could not find browns after the early season...
  25. Lmao strong opinions gotta love fishermen. I get them both ways but mostly suspended bottom dancing only when I have enough good experience on board to work riggers so I don’t lose equipment.
