  1. Took the day off on Monday and was targeting lakers on Owasco. Hit both the east and west side of the lake and got fish, but the west side seemed more productive for us that day. Went 7/8 with my buddy getting the biggest at 8.2 lbs. That was the biggest laker my boat has seen in my limited trolling experience, but got him on a trout alien cowbell and gambler rig. We were fishing 70-90 FOW with the riggers near the bottom as much as possible. Best speed for us was around 1.7mph at the ball. Marked lots of bait too, which was nice cause hadn't seen much the last few outings. Overall, if you want lakers on owasco I'd recommend gambler rigs and with some hammerhead cowbells. Lots of good folks on here sharing information on what to use and how, which has helped my learning curve dramatically, so hope this helps too. Best of luck. 2. Made a quick trip out on Owasco this morning. First time since the 4th of July weekend and was very happy to see the fleas have subsided. On the flip side though, the water was very green and cloudy. Not sure if it was from the recent rains but the water clarity was terrible. Might have been able to see my rigger ball 2' down and that was it. Set up in about 80' looking for lakers and 20 min after set I got my first of the day on a trout alien set up. Seemed like a good omen but could only manage to land one other laker for the day on a death trap. All in all pretty slow but can't beat this beautiful weather Sent from my SM-A515U using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  3. Talked to Kurt at Kell and he mentioned that it should work 30-40' down even without coated cable so he didn't think it had anything to do with exposed metal/cable. He figured it was a connection issue somehow. Ended up getting a coax adaptor to connect the antenna to the display instead of using the 20' of coax cable that came it. Touched on some dielectric grease to the coax connections and works good now. Sent from my SM-A515U using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  4. Hit up owasco yesterday with a buddy to try and give the new depth raider a try. Didnt get out till about noon and was greeted with a pretty good SW wind. Was hot so the wind actually was nice. Got a new to me depth raider so gave it a shot for the first time. Not completely sold on it yet, but worked the east side of lake from about 1-4pm with our biggest (5.6 lb) coming from 80' down on the bottom. Fleas were atrocious though. If you went more than 20 min in the water you'd have a hard time reeling it in without clogging your rod eyes. Moved over to the east side of the lake as the sky got a bit darker and found good marks and hungrier fish. Finished the day by boating 7 lakers total and 4 of them came in our last hour of fishing on the west. Trout alien cowbells took all but one fish. Everything caught the fleas though as they weren't near as picky[emoji38]. Sent from my SM-A515U using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  5. Thanks again all for the help on this Ended up getting in touch with Kurt at Kell and explained to him what was going on. He was baffled by me noting I could get it to work in a bucket with my hand in it. Kind of proud and sad when he told Mr he'd never heard of that [emoji1787] He was thinking it was more of a connection issue instead of my klincher terminal, so I ended up buying an adaptor to just plug the antenna into the back of the display. Put di-electric grease on all my connection coax connection points and it worked! Almost lost the probe 20 mins later when I got hung up on bottom but was able to scramble backwards for it to come loose [emoji38] thanks again everyone for the help! 6. I grew up in Cape and during the fall you would see some trying to run up kents creek every now and then if the water level was high enough. Again, not all the common but was still cool to see a few.
  7. Awesome fish and great work! Sent from my SM-A515U using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  8. Thanks again all for the feedback. Today was the first day I've been able to try it and still no luck. Got it wired right to the starter battery but still just dashes. Have narrowed it down to being a ground issue though. Whwn I put my hand on top of the probe when in the water it works so think I'm just gonna coat all my connection points in liquid tape and see what happens Sent from my SM-A515U using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  9. Thank you again for all the incredibly helpful responses here. Reached out to Kell/Depth raider and never heard anything back so the responses here are greatly appreciated. Played around with a bit last night to double check my connections and limit my exposed wire. I had planned on hooking it up to my trolling motor battery but now I'll be sure to run it to my starter. I'll keep you posted on how the first outing goes and thanks again!
  10. anyone happen to have a link for the install? I can't seem to find it anywhere on their website or the interweb
  11. Didn't even know that was a thing so greatly appreciate the response. I just unpacked the new cable and strung it on. So basically have to strip some of the coating off the cable and then attach it to the rigger spool? Even if the spool is plastic? Also, how much of the coating needs to be taken off? 12. Well triple checked the battery and slapped a grounding wire into the bucket and still nothing. Ended up running a separate wire right from the probe to the antenna along with the grounded wire in the bucket and got a temperature to show up! Was pretty pumped so thanks for the suggestion above about the ground! Was happy to know the probe and antenna are OK. Here's a weird kicker though (weird to me cause I'm not an electrical guy) but when I submerged the whole probe with the separate wire, it wouldn't work. If I just dipped to get the probe wet and kept the wire out of the water, it works. In the pics I'm trying to use my finger as a reference for the water line to try and explain what I mean. Be a bare wire issue or something? Also, anyone got install instructions for these things? Suppose that might be helpful [emoji1787] Sorry if these are dumb questions but I'm just winging it over here [emoji28] Sent from my SM-A515U using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  13. Recently purchased a new to me DR1000 depth raider. Guy said everything work but just needed the coated cable. Fast forward to cable installation and new klincher termination I'm still am not able to get any reading on my display. It is only showing dashes after I hook everything up and drop the probe in a bucket of water (not touch the bottom or side). Tried new 9v batteries but still no luck. Afraid it might be a bad probe but not sure how to test it. Anyone have any thoughts as to what might be going on or what I might need to check next? TIA Sent from my SM-A515U using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  14. Awesome to see most folks do well this past weekend. We weren't as fortunate as we only got 2 lakers with the biggest being 4.5lbs over 2 days of fishing. Marked tons of bait and a good amount of fish but thinking my speed was off from where it should have been. I was pumped I hooked into a small laker on a dipsey with a death trap though as that was a first for me. Lost it at the boat but happy it worked. Another first and by far our best catch was this 9lb anchor with buoy my buddy got on a dipsey in 100 fow down about 80'. Could barely get the rod out of the holder it had so much tension on it and it's a minor miracle the line didn't break. Had to put the boat in neutral and pull all lines to get it in. Was laughing the whole time my buddy was reeling cause I knew he was going to be sore from the "fight". Not sure how it got out there but made for pretty memorable struggle and it was still smaller than the winning laker[emoji1787] Sent from my SM-A515U using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  15. This whole thread is great! Cool to read the story behind the story so thanks for sharing!
  16. Great stuff and was pumped to see you join these guys! Sent from my SM-A515U using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  17. Gotta Have it Fishing charter (Website here) with Captain Keith or Irish Hammer Fishing (Website here) with Captain Corbett are both great. Gotta have it does a great shore lunch with a fat back sandwich that is incredible (not recommended if you have a heart condition thought)
  18. Good call. Was thinking about heading up to fair haven to try our luck with the pike too but stuck it out on owasco. As always, good stuff and happy to see someone get their boat a bit more slimey and smelly [emoji1787] Sent from my SM-A515U using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  19. On one side I'm a bit relieved it wasn't just me striking out but would have been nice for one of us to hit them good. Always next time I suppose Sent from my SM-A515U using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  20. First time out on Owasco this year. Launched at Emerson around 2 and headed for the point. Found some good marks down 90' but only managed 1 laker on a chicken wing spoon. Lots of lookers but few takers. We switched spoons, rigs, bells, traps and changed speeds quite a bit, but didn't seem to matter much. Sometimes I wonder if it'd be less beneficial but less stressful if I didn't see the fish on the finder [emoji28] Either way, great to get out with a buddy on a nice day Sent from my SM-A515U using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  21. Bullhead fishing with a bamboo pole is what started it all for me. Hook, sinker, bobber and a couple feet of line on the end of a stick and when the bite wasn't happening we'd play in the mud and dam up the small streams running off the fields into the creek. Life was good those days. Thanks for the trip down memory lane there but as other have said the mouths of creeks after a good warm rain was always the ticket. My Grandfather always use to say, if the worms are out, the bullhead will be biting. He'd also say that once you started seeing trout lilly's blossom, then they'd be further upstream.
  22. Crazy the amount of water in the lakes rights now. My buddy sent me these pics last night from Emerson on Owasco. Water is just crazy high Sent from my SM-A515U using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  23. Went out yesterday with a friend and found some good bait out in 60-80' but only managed to get 1 steelhead on a dipsey out 140' in 80 fow with an orange mag spoon. Not much of a report, but hope you all have better luck!
