Hi folks, When I was a kid, all the landlock trollers in Maine & NH had these Boxes with windshield wiper motors with a downeast rod holder on top as rod jiggers. They were very effective working streamer flies. Eventually, they were made small and manageable and mounted to the gunnels. ( original ones were in 2'x2' plywood boxes and put in the middle of the boat and worked two fly rods) Cannon made one called "THE ENTICER OR EXCITOR". I am looking for one or two of these homemade or cannon units if any of you come across them. I passed up on a couple aluminum boxes two years ago. I wish i hadn't. No one makes them anymore. I want to use them but also to keep the technique alive with my kids and grand kids. thanks for your help coach

Hi folks, I wish I thought to post this a few years ago I am a transplanted New Englander finishing my 30 years of teaching in Florida ( 3 left) I grew up trolling Lakes in Maine, NH and NY for trout and salmon. In the last 10 years i have found reservoirs in the South that have great Trout, Walleye and Striper fishing. These are big fish too,and weather is rarely a factor . Most ramps easily accommodate Deep Vee boats up to 20'. Accommodations are very reasonable in the area as well. You all have everything you need to score-- downriggers, planer boards, spoons, plugs. Striper fishing is a livebait affair though. Licenses are cheap. Gas is cheap. 4 guys towing their own boat (900 miles) could easily do a week for $600-700 all inclusive-(gas, rental house, bait, license, food & including a day with a guide. or fly to atlanta or closer airport to area you choose, rent a car and do 3 days with a guide-- for 4 guys-all inclusive $900 each +/- 5 areas to consider Trolling that I know well--many have 3 species of bass too. Many of these lakes have nothing but Nat'l forest surrounding them, real wilderness fishing--no homes at all--they are all deep--up to 300'--Fishing is great year round as all lakes are dam controlled and keep water frigid. Lake cheoah never gets above 60 degrees ever. normal air temps-- In february-25 degrees at 7 am, 50 degrees at 1pm & march 35 degrees at 7 am and 55-60+ at 1 pm. Roads are in great condition but can be STEEP so IF you tow a 19' lund loaded with a 6 cyl pickup your truck will strain. (sole reason I jumped from a Tacoma to a Tundra 4 yrs ago) Lots of wildlife everywhere too 1.South Carolina --Very good Trout in Lake Jocassee and Stripers/walleye in Lake Hartwell 2.East Tennessee-Rainbows and Lakers in Watuaga Reservoir 3.North Georgia- Lake Burton-Big Browns & Rainbows, Walleyes and Hybrid stripers--Lake Seed & Lake Rabun right below dam (18' boat max) 4.Central North Carolina-Lake Fontana-Good Rainbows, walleye some browns and muskies, Lake Cheoah-all 3 trout and muskies, lake Calderwood- browns, rainbows and trophy smallies-(18' boat max), Lake santeelah- good brown, Rainbows, walleye 5.western North Carolina--Lake Hiwassie- good Stripers, good walleye, few trout, Lake apalachia-Browns, a few Rainbows, good smallies, Lake Notteley (Ga) -good stripers if anyone is interested in a southern trip feel free to PM me--i have guide contacts i'd recommend, houses i have rented, bait shops, restaurants and good knowledge of all of those lakes or call/text 8 am-8 pm 561-301-4169 coach

I teach Driver's ED so I have a little freedom in what i teach. The core subject teachers are mandated to teach to their tests- so out are the real stories in history that made this country great. Out are the stories from the cold war and the real life stories of living in a socialist country and who has the power. This is why we have so many socialists in power today. Anyway, if we all kind of forcefully encourage family vacations that are intertwined with the outdoors, our next generations will be OK. I rent a house for a week in March big enough for everyone to stay. We fish the reservoirs around Murphy ,NC for Trout, Walleye and Stripers. I rent a house for a week in July in Rangeley, Maine for the same reason and fish for Landlocks and Brookies. The two kids and their families come in for at least a few days. (Heck, I even rebuilt a 16' tiller sea nymph for my son, who is a GM at a Kia dealership in Massachusetts, to take his family out. Last summer my 1.5 year old grandson was out on every evening trolling trip having a ball) We can not control everything, but we can kind of push our families in the direction we want them to go Good Luck Coach -

Folks--it's the cell phones and technology i have been a HS teacher for 27 years, & I am 56.. I've watched this occur. Kids play madden games instead of the real games. Notice how many athletic fields are empty One of Northern Maine's premier salmon lakes was studied. In the mid 1990's, the lake averaged 2000 angler hours. In 2016 it averaged less than 500. When i was younger and thru my 30's, driving from RI to Maine in May or June--every other vehicle had a boat attached to it for Ice out fishing. The last few years, in 5 hours of driving to Rangeley Lake, we might see 1, or 2 fishing boats in tow. My kids and grandkids love the outdoors, however wifi is a must at the cabin due to their careers. Time on the water unplugged is fine as long as wifi is at the rental home to catch up. On the positive side, Rangeley lake and Moosehead get less fishing pressure and the fishing has gotten better. All of the strings of cottages i stayed in as a young man, are out of business or sold as condos as no one patronized them. Lets count our blessings that we were raised without the technology these kids have. Also Lets be thankful that our kids have a deep appreciation of the outdoors (even if they need wifi when they get off the water) lol good fishing coach -

We did not use an outfitter. My buddy owns a camp in western Maine and we grew up running around the state. I am a Teacher?Coach of 27 years, My buddy is a State Trooper of 24 years . One of our friend's is an unbelievable Maine woodsman. He helped us scout 3 days before and we found some great spots and things came together opening morning. Moose down at 9:30, on the truck at noon, weigh station by 2, butcher by 7pm. When you get selected, you will be inundated with outfitter info. Out of a dozen hunters we spoke with, only one was unhappy with his outfitter. Do not waste your time road hunting---it rarely works now as herd is smaller and educated. We found skidder trails off roads off roads and found lots of sign. i forgot the zone # , but we were adjacent to Baxter state park. the outfitters run about $3000 for two for meals and lodging and guiding and getting your trophy on a trailer. Its about $800 for the butchering. I would call local game wardens and ask for referrals then call previous hunters in the referrals. good luck. Its a memory that we still talk about and we 'll take to our graves. Unbelievable!!!!!

don't forget about Maine--in 2017, after 17 years of putting in for the drawing, we were selected. I can't tell you how spectacular the hunt went. My buddy and I harvested an 8.5 year old bull that weighed 854 lbs and was 45'' wide as his best days were behind him. He charged in at full speed to fight the bull grunting in his domain, and I mean charged. At various places, we met other hunters who were drawn after only a year or two entering. Best of luck, as it will be the hunt of your life coach

Fish April, May or June--FLEAS HIT IN JULY. The entire lake can be good. We stay in Romulus and launch according to wind. On west side Deans is closest and T falls is 12 miles south-- South wind, we'll put in at Ithacca and a strong east wind will make us drive 45 min to east side launch. April, May & June allow for great fishing and fish are rarely below 50' most from top to 25' deep over various depths. good luck coach

I put them on a 20' deep vee aluminum 1966 Chrysler Lonestar polara (that i completely repurposed to a side console beast)w/ Yamaha 130--the boat wanted to turn hard left above 3800 rpm...tried many things. Smart tabs made it 1000% better-not perfect but could run safely at 35 mph without fighting the torque. They were a great help with proper planing as well. good luck and happy holidays coach

At 56, a New Englander transplanted in Florida--Here is your best deal. search Craigslist in Florida. There are real bargains. Be willing to pay a deposit and drive down and get it---you'll save thousands. Floridians hate aluminum boats unless they look like a jon boat or have an ariplane motor mounted on them. For your budget, you will have equity immediately. For example, My current boat is a 2010 Lowe 175fs. I paid $8000. (new is $35 k+) The boat was barn kept and never used. The 90 Etec had 63 hours on it and I sold it online for $6000. I replaced it with a new 90 yamaha 4 stroke, mounted removable downriggers, added an Ulterra by minn kota--it is perfect for intercoastal fishing here, bass fishing here, and we tow it to the reservoirs of the south and up to the finger lakes or new england for 2 weeks every summer. On this site, ebay, or walleye central; my boat would fetch $15 k and i am into it for $8500. check it out--if you are careful, you will find an old northerner who realized it is too hot to fish here, or his health is not what it was, or he bought a flats boat-- and his deep vee tin boat is just sitting. i have flipped 6 boats in the last 10 years--half were rebuilds, 1/2 were just flipped -----(2006 crestliner w/ 150 merc 4 stroke(190 hours)-- i paid $5500 and sold it in 2 days to a michigan guy for $10.5 k and could have gotten more) feel free to pm me with any ?'s. coach -
