  1. I love to fish. Troll, cast, ice, bobber, lake, river, ocean. We eat a lot of fish. Salmon, walleye, tuna, halibut and it is nice to catch it yourself and give it to people to enjoy. There is a decrease in the number of anglers everywhere and I agree that everyone, but me, seems to be getting older. Caught my first salmon on the Platte river in Michigan 51 years ago when I was 8. Not as many kids fishing today which is not good for the future of the sport.
  2. Started in 50 feet of water, 50 degrees, my brother had a nice king take the line right out of the release on a 12 ounce torpedo diver 30 feet out. Great start. Boated another king and an Atlantic and had a hour lull. Slipped out into 60 to 80 and found the fish again and finished with a nice box of 6 kings and the Atlantic. Released 1 brown. Mixed bite between the riggers 30 to 50 and torpedo divers on the boards out 30 to 60. Moonshine RV sea sick and rodfather were the spoons of choice. All the other boats were in close chasing browns. Marked big schools of bait on the bottom and all the fish were full of big mooneyes.
  3. Ran a test with the black light I use to charge my spoons. The moonshines glow far brighter and longer than all others. I picked up a few hawks spoons at the sportsman show and they came in second. The pirate spoon came in 3rd, about even with the stinger stingray blackhead and the weakest glow, by far, was the dreamweaver. That being said, sometimes I think the moonshine’s glow too much when you first put them in the water.
  4. A number of years ago I picked up some standard moonshine rv spoons in a rodfather pattern. This is not a standard moonshine offering, it was a special run. These are by far my most productive spoons for kings in the spring, in low light conditions. I can’t find them anymore and the 4 I have left are pretty chewed up. I ordered a couple of pirate spoons in this pattern but the glow only lasts a few minutes. I see dreamweaver has them. Does anyone have any experience with the dreamweaver glow? How does it last?
  5. In 50 years of fishing LO, 17 of those years chartering, I have never seen a bite like this mornings in Sandy. Set up in 100 feet, thermocline was down 40. 3 riggers down 50, 40, and 30. Two rods start screaming. Had 6 in the cooler at 5:40 (just my brother and I) Released a bunch of fish and was back in the dock at 7:00. All mature kings except one shaker and a steelhead. Not sure it made much difference but the moonshine carbon 14 in hulk and rv along with the rv crab apple and stingray blackhead were great. 300 coppers and dipsys at 80 to 100. Three mph seemed to be the best speed but hooked fish at 1.5 mph while fighting other fish.

  6. Personally I’d rather catch a bunch of fish rather than a few big ones. That said, everyone fishes for different reasons. The biomass of bait fish certainly affects the size of the kings but the number of years the salmon spends in the lake is the biggest factor. Those 40+ pound fish were 5 year olds. If we want those big fish, the workers at the hatchery need to take eggs and sperm from the biggest fish and mix them. Or better yet, get some eggs from some Pacific fish that are 5 or 6 year old spawners. The Kenai River has lost its huge fish because for 50 years they have taken the biggest (oldest spawning) fish out before they can spawn. This has been a great conversation with everyone being respectful. Part of what makes this site great. Hope everyone has a great season.
  7. I didn’t know they had lampreys in Mexico, they probably slither right through the border wall. Fished Oswego on Saturday, probably caught a dozen kings, no eels. Caught a laker with a tag in it’s back, called the number on the tag and are waiting for a callback.
  8. These are all small lampreys, must have come out of their larval stage recently. I would have thought if they resumed treatment in 2022, these would’ve been killed. I have fished the lake for 49 years and the only other time I have seen them like this is when we fished the bubble off the oil plant in Oswego for browns in the late 70’s.
  9. Look for the salmon in 50 to 200 feet of water. Glow in the morning UV when the sun gets high.
  10. I think that there was a lot that did not get done in 2020 because of Covid, look at the poor numbers of 3 year olds last year.
  11. It sounds like the fishing has been great along the whole South shore. We have fished out of Oswego 4 times now and it has been great. The only down side has been the number of lampreys on the fish. About 1 in 6 fish have had eels on them. All the fish carry scars from past encounters. Had a 5 pound brown the other day with 2 on it. Is this happening along the whole South shore or is it a Oswego thing.
  12. The 3 blade prop seems to be doing fine. Have fished 3 days with 2 planner boards and 3 riggers out and have had no problems. Troll master is working great, love the motor. May try the 4 blade prop when the bank account gets rebuilt. Thanks for all the advice.
  13. We fish fast in the Spring, 3 plus mph for salmon. So we fish straight spoons at these speeds. We will start with the ff once the thermocline sets up. Does not mean the ff won’t work early.
  14. Thanks for the info. I have a 19 foot Lowe and am replacing a 2006 Johnson 8 hp that was belt driven it was loud and vibrated like crazy. We are planning to fish on Sunday or Monday so we will see how the new motor pushes the boat.
  15. Just bought a Suzuki 9.9 for trolling. It came with the standard 3 blade prop. I see a lot of guys have the four blade props on their trolling motors. What is the advantage of these props for trolling?
  16. They run those thin fins in Michigan a lot for coho in reds and oranges. Thanks for the report, great day.
  17. I run 10 foot medium heavy rods with twilly tips for my high divers and 8 foot medium heavy rods with twilly tips on my low divers.
  18. This winter I decided I would try and learn to be a better flasher/fly fisherman, there is some great content on YouTube and I have noticed the Michigan guys rig their dreamweaver flies backwards ( the skinny way) This must give the fly a much skinnier profile. Has anyone tried to run attomik or minion flies backwards? Has anyone had any success doing this.
  19. We catch a lot of fish with the torpedo divers on the boards, run 4,8 and 12 oz. Not a exact science, we run them on 15 pound braid, if you watch the angle of the line, your depth is very speed dependent. We run them on our big boards, we start the outside rod at 60 feet, middle at 90, inside at 120. If one goes a couple of times we will run all three at that depth, typically the 60 will be good early and as the sun gets higher the fish move down and the deeper rods go better. This is before the thermocline sets up and the fish are spread throughout the water column.
  20. For our fixed sliders, we just half hitch a rubber band around the down rigger cable, hook the slider snap around the line to the rod and through the rubber band, close the snap. When the fish hits, it breaks the rubber band, releases the rod and you are on. Once had a wicked hit on the rigger then nothing. Brought the rigger up and found I had snapped the cheater leader directly to the down rigger cable. Not much give there, spoon gone.
  21. When running sliders or fixed cheaters I put a bead on my main line, above the swivel, 6 foot leader to my snap. This prevents the slider/cheater from sliding all the way to the swivel on my main line and puts both spoons about the same distance back. The swivel on the slider does not screw up the swivel on the main line and if you double on that rod, which happens, you can net both fish at the same time.
  22. Fished Oswego Saturday afternoon, 100 to 220 feet of water. Ended up with 2 kings and a coho. They seem to be hard to come by this year. All 3 fish came on 11 inch, green dalmation pro trolls with bait. Can’t buy a fish on a flasher fly. Eggs seem to be real tight, might last a little longer this year.
  23. I run 21 to 22 inch leaders on my 8 inch spinnys. Just picked up a few 10 inch spin doctors and was wondering what length you guys are running to your flies behind these 10 inchers?
