  1. That a boy! Looks like you had a blast, happy for ya!!!
  2. Hi Everyone - I don't know if this realistic, but are there lures that you can cast out, retrieve back, but have the lure swim deep, 20-30 feet? I'm interested in experimenting with casting and retrieving horizontally as opposed to the vertical jigging I typically do (right time of year). Would something like a heavy bucktail twitched or jersey stay down pretty deep?
  3. Hope everyone is having a good summer so far! I've been curious, are people having success on the FL's trolling stick baits or crank baits (similar sticks like you run in your spring shallow program) down to depth? I'm picturing like the walleye guys do with cranks. Is this something people do or have tried? Im scratching my head coming up with reasons why fish wouldn't grab a stick bait wiggling by just like they would a spoon.
  4. I appreciate the reply! How far in front of your lure are you running the torpedo diver?
  5. Thanks for the reply! I have had some success with lead core, I don't like the resultant fight with the fish, you just kind of drag them in....I think it's just more enjoyable to fight them on light spinning tackle like I do when long lining the shallow stuff early spring
  6. Hope everyone is having a good Spring! I couldn't get anything in the skinny water to cooperate last couple days so let's talk deeper! This season I have a goal to experiment with a downrigger setup via Kayak, and am looking for some general advice. **ball weights/shapes, anyone use 1-3lb weights with success? Reading through older threads I see preference for 10-12lb, makes sense, but that is a lot to manage in a Kayak. Any shape or style help combat blowback? **Any safety issues with using a down rigger with a Kayak? Does the kayak still "ride" the chop and waves ok? Any issues with the downrigger weight pulling the gunwale into the water? *rod action - do you need a pretty light action to allow the rod to bend when you clip to the downrigger line? Sorry for the long post - just always could use help getting through the learning curve!
  7. Anyone have a good resource for surface temps? I cannot find the Cornell one.
  8. Thanks for posting JJ....very good lessons learned here on this near Miss.
  9. Mannn....I keep struggling with this too, every which way I have rigged stingers they get tangled into the plastic bait on the fall or come up with mussels on them. Any advice on stinger hooks Sk8?
  10. Hi Everyone - I've got an itch to chase musky this fall with the kayak, probably on Waneta. My thought is to concentrate on trolling for them. Anyone mind offering some "Musky 101" advice? Generally speaking....can you catch them on more typical lures like 4-5" jointed raps? Or do you need to use the bigger 8" Musky cranks etc.? What kind of depths are you trying to get lures to run? Thanks in advance!
  11. How deep would the 200 copper put your Sutton when trolling?
  12. Wow, what a Beauty, nice work!
  13. Thanks Sk8! When you say work the shorelines, are we talking 15fow or so like you would early spring, or more like where it's deep right of the shore?
  14. Hi everyone! With help from the group a couple weeks ago I was able to get a couple Rainbows from the kayak, figured I'd try again. What are the browns doing this time of year? Are they on structure? Are they suspended? Will they hit small spoons like the rainbows will? Just not sure why I haven't gotten into any of them with the hours I've spent on the lake. I feel like I'm not understanding their behavior.
  15. Thanks sk8! I don't have any Suttons but but have some bay rat spoons and dream weavers I'd like to try. I'm new to spoons, would you say small is approx 2-1/2 and medium is about 3-1/2" Any particular colors or general patterns seem to be more productive?
  16. Hello everyone. I'm itching to get into some rainbows, particularly on Canandaigua and Cayuga. The caveat I have is that with the kayak, im not sure I'm getting Deep enough or using the right tools.. *Anyone have thoughts on spoons vs stick baits, flashers and flys. *I feel I can use lead core with 5 colors out manageably, are rainbows in that 25ft range, or are they deeper. Happy Fishing!
  17. The weather went from zero to 60 pretty quick in the last couple of months, I do think the window of opportunity closed extremely fast. Water was crystal clear early on, then we had big winds and rain, then the Temps shot up....I would definitely say it was slow going this spring down there.
  18. When you fish jigs in the shallows like this, how are you retrieving, are you bouncing them off the bottom and reel them in? I've been trying to figure out a technique to cast in skinny water in a kayak, just to take a break from trolling.
  19. I've been wondering about flat fish! I've never fished them, but the concept is interesting. What about blade baits like steelshad or binskies, anyone gave them a troll?
  20. Thanks for the feedback! It's crazy how much impact invasive can have! Are the Lakers still out deeper in March and April? Someone once told me that Lakers are always deep all year. With regards to distance behind the boat, I can generally long line stick baits at depths of 10-15ft running a good 100ft behind me. Is 100ft decent enough run behind the boat (paddle kayak) for the shallower bows and landlocks (browns too).
  21. Good morning - I'm sitting here pondering some warmer days. Id like to hit the lakes in March and April as the Temps make it more reasonable to get out with Kayak and dry suit. I'm looking for a starting point on where the fish hang out early Spring. Are they spread out anywhere March and April, is there a general depth to start searching for them at that time of year?
  22. Wondering if anyone chase trout with fly gear from their motor boats? Is there a time of year you can drift and cast steamers etc? Could you catch Lakers in the Winter in shallow from your boat, similar to how people catch them from shore? Just looking for ways to get away from trolling.
  23. I'm in the Canandaigua area, so I am thinking Webster is more or less where I want to target, Anyone know of a good kayak Launch or swimming beach in the Webster area?
  24. Thanks for the reply! Could they be along any stretch of shoreline, or do they like to congregate on points, mouths, etc?
