DEC needs help collecting walleye heads!

DEC is conducting a walleye study in the Lower Niagara River, Irondequoit Bay and Sodus Bay. They are trying to differentiate wild vs stocked walleye using microchemistry of otoliths (ear bones). To help the study, DEC is asking anglers to donate walleye heads from harvested fish.

They need 100 samples from each waterbody and right now they have very few from Sodus Bay and Irondequoit Bay. Samples have to come from the Bays (not the Lake).

Freezers are at Sutter’s and Krenzer’s. Bags and labels are provided. Anglers should include date, body of water, approximate location of catch, and length of the fish. You can fillet fish as normal, then sever the head from the spine and place into a bag.

For questions or additional details on the project, contact DEC Region 8 Fisheries:

You’re also welcome to email me (Stacy from NY Sea Grant) and I can relay the question: [email protected]

Freezer locations:

  • Irondequoit Bay - Sutter’s Marina. 512 Bay Front St., Rochester, NY 14609
  • Sodus Bay - Krenzer Marine, 8495 Greig St, Sodus Point, NY 14555
