For those interested, here is a little more info about how we rig our thumper rods:

Dodger needs to be a Luhr Jensen or Les Davis. They consistently begin to rotate at 2.7 mph. My best leader length is 54 inches, including a snubber, and an 18 inch dropper to the weight off of kind of a 3 way swivel rig. With a 16 oz weighton 20# wire, 300 feet of wire will put you down around 100 feet. Use the thumper to determine your trolling speed. When it rolls you are at 2.7 mph down speed, check your surface speed or GPS SOG when it rolls and you can then vary your speed on you electronics for that given direction. Need to check speed in each direction you are trolling. By far the most accurate down speed unit I use, and it catches fish. My best combo is the Trash Can/Green Stripe dodger with a silver green Howie Flies. Chartreuse and green beads in the fly.
