.. .....competition level just went up a notch!

...some more good info on this subject a couple posts down..."Kickin Amps". I've never even had a problem with the charging issue with the 6 amp alt. I run 4 riggers, VHF, GPS, FF, & autopilot plus any other little accessory stuff like in the summer when the wind drops out and it's hot I run 1 to 2 electric fans (maybe air conditioning some day ) in the helm area and the batteries stay fully charged. For $20.00 you can take all the guess work (and panick  attacks  ) out of the battery condition. Cabela's item # OG-016648. This unit tells you % of charge or capacity of the battery. Kinda like a fuel gauge for batteries. Unless you are running electric trolling motors on your boat you don't need deep cycle batteries. I my opinion the Perko switch should never be on BOTH for any reason, even charging. Use one battery at a time and same with charging. So back to your 6 amp question. I think it will be OK even if it's only a 6 amp kicker. Even though output is dependant on RPM's you don't have to be redlined to get 6 amps. My engine runs about 1800 to 2200 rpm while trolling and batteries stay fully charged even after 6 hours of trolling.

Usually the electric start engine have an alternator combo. Probably a 6 amp. The best why to find out is get the model number off the data plate and call a merc dealer to check for you. That information is in the model number. Mine is a merc 9.9 4 stroke electric start 6amp-model# ME 9.9EH 4S

Ya know I'm not going to let those comments from `frisco & chaos go by with out some rebutal. I'll try and keep it a nice a possible because we all know how sensitive Chaos is.... Before I give you my version of the fishing report I just what all to know that `frisco was again as gracious as he can be. Other than the fact that there was plenty of heat and food in the boat the companionship was limited. He seemed a little crotchety at times (must be a full moon or MENstrual thing  ). Sorta bossy...I know he is the Captain but come on, I'm supposed to be the guest. Well anyway, we were lucky enough to wack a couple fish right off the bat and he kept saying "you handle the fish, I don't want to get fish slim on me". At first I didn't mind but then my hands were freezing. The water temp was 37 deg and my little fingers were getting colder everytime I washed them off. I figured that the only way around that was to not catch some fish for awhile so I told him about this real secret hot area to try. Little did he know that HOT part was for the benefit of my hands and the secret was there usually isn't any fish there:) . The rest of the story is in his post. Can't wait for the tourny. Already have a deal cut with Mary Ann so Chaos you better check you lines for nicks real good the day of the event. Could have some knicks as far as 75', 100' feet in the spool . ........ Don't bother asking her. She'll just deny any of this.... .

I've been a advocate of that rule in New York for years, but who the hell am I? :? I'm also a advocate of a fishing license for the boat like in Virginia. You buy a license for the boat and all those in the boat are covered by the license....... That would be to easy  .

stinger/screen name.....boat name/call sign " Li`L Buddy"

I know this doesn't answer your question but I think the best way to go with your setup is like mikejones says. In any boat with only two riggers you can add another rod (dipsey, lead core, thumper, flatline) to the mix and still have 2 baits/lures on each rigger. If your not using dipseys then your really missing a golden opportunity to catch fish. In a small boat you probably only have two guys which limits you to 4 rods total. I think 2 rods on a rigger with sliders/cheaters on each rod is asking for trouble. Just a thought.

OK...lets try this: First of all the links still will bring you to the gizmos, so thats ok. To be able to read all the text in the posts I selected that particular post that I want to read and past it in my word processor or note pad to read the whole thing. I know , a lot of jerking around, sorry. I hope I can fish better than I use a computer .

foiled again  tried to work around the screan problem but blow it...Oh well

wow....at first I thought your subject title read "kickin ass", then I reread it and put the gloves away I'll answer your PM also but thought that some of the guys may be interested in this. Not for all boats but may apply................. to a few. My kicker (9.9 Mercury 4stroke) has a 6 amp alternator and seems to handle my boats power requirments just fine. .............. My electrical needs are - 4 Big Jon's, VHF, GPS, FF and Autopilot (older King AP2000). The autopilot is engaged alot of..................... the time that I'm trolling and is probably the highest power consumer on boad. Here are a couple neat add-ons that I installed to take the guess work out of some of your concerns: A small profile battery monitor that keeps you informed of the % of charge of each battery. I got the surface mount.......... unit and is easly to install. Cabela's has them on sale now for $20.00. Well worth the cost and you'll never worry about .................. how your batteries are doing. A quick look at the gauge and you'll know if switching/charging batteriers is needed. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templ ... &noImage=0 The next neat gizmo is a little tach/rpm gauge. Installs in about 15 minutes or less. I put this on because I'm one of................ those guys that wants to know how many hours are on the engine. You'll crank up a lot of trolling hours before............... you know it. I like to know when it's time for a oil change, not guess at it. Also put one on my ATV http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templ ... &noImage=0 Had to do some jerking around with the ....... so you wouldn't loose any words that go off the screen :? . I know .................. the guys are working on it so this will have to do until that's fixed.

Gee Dave I wish you didn't post that. `frisco just got back from his Carribean cruise yesterday and I have him talked into taking me fishing Saturday. I hope he doesn't read this.

....well I hope your happy. That was the worst thing you could have said. Everybody and their brother will be hammering that web site so they can cash in on them because they won't be available anymore. You know how it is. Nobody wants it until it's not available anymore. ....on second thought it may have been a good thing. If enough guys start asking for them they may keep up production for you. ....that `stix is a pretty smart guy

Well Chaos it looks like you got Finger Lakes section of the board alive again. Great seeing all these hits. Can only get better now that February is over and thoughts of pulling boats out of storage have started. I don't follow the tournament schedule so I'm throwing this date out to see what happens..... The weekend of June 23 & 24 (Sat & Sun). Its the Free Fishing Weekend in New York and that would be a great time to have a FISH-OFF with families involved. Ya don't have to worry about licenses for the wife/girlfriend/neighbor/mother-in-law ...you get the idea. A great opportunity to get a non-fisher introduced to the sport (addiction) of sportfishing.

Landshark.....ya got to straighten me out. Looks like a walleye in your signature but I've never seen a `eye jump before :? . Is it a hybrid of some sort? Like maybe a landlocked Wall-mon....or a Steel-eye...or something like that. Boy, can you imagine a jumping walleye. That would be the hottest thing going.........a good eating fun fish to catch!

Nice job BlueEye (& staff). That was a quick change over. Did you get any sleep last night? I'm still checking the new things out, but I should get used to it pretty quick. Having a little problem in the pictures section with the pictures & text wider than the screen and no way to slide the screen to the left so I can view the right side. Not sure if it's on my end (operator error  ). I'll keep plugging away at it. Thanks again for your persistence in ridding us of the hackers

Looks like we have at least one guy that's not going to sit around and wait for April. Thanks Hermit for the Boy Scout try. Your fishing report is a lot better than mine. The Finger Lakes threads are few and by the looks of it they are getting reread over and over again. I can't help much either because `frisco (my ride) is on a cruise in the eastern Caribbean and won't be back till next week . The only ice he has to contend with this week is in his drinks . I planned a little wood working project at home to keep me occupied till he is back and then maybe we'll try and get the boat in the lake (after you break the ice in the launch area) . Hope you get out, be safe, keep us posted......

......now thats exactly what I did. I slit the throats of my pancake weights and they are far away from my boat........all the way in the back of the garage...... Thanks janz, maybe someday......
-
I run 10# (outside) & 12# (inside/deeper) balls and somethimes 10# fish weights. Tried to run pancakes a few times two years ago and had 3 tangles   while running dodgers. Now that was a treat. :? It took me 1/2 hour to untangle that mess each time.. and that was using scissors to speed up the process :x . Took them off and they sit in the garage ever since. Wasn't till a little later that I figured out what was going on. I had the releases hooked on the back of the pancakes and with the rods/lines tightened down for normal rigger fishing it would steer the weights to the opposite side the rod was positioned on the rigger. The deeper the weight the more swing to the other side it would go. Eventually the weights would cross and the fun began  . Needless to say I don't attach any releases to the weights anymore (especially the fish weights) and haven't had a problem since. Also by attaching off the cable instead of the weight you can turn much sharper without tangling lines. The pancakes may work better by attaching to the cable but I'll probably never get over the tangle mess I had using them so they can sit in the garage.

  ....tequila seems to keep that little worm in pretty good shape for years. Should work on fish slime... Only problem is you'll have to drink the tequila to get to the slime. Maybe you should use small bottles so you'll be able to fish most the day.

...been reading your posts on this subject and haven't responded because I don't use cow bells or fish lake Ontario but couldn't help myself after you seem hell bent on catching Lake Trout. If your really into lakers then the finger lakes is were it's at. Lots of fish and some nice average size - 4lb to 10lb with several every year over the 10lb class. These lakers fall for most any lure and presentation. Your job would be to use them to your advantage when the time is right. Lake trolls are a proven techinque on these lakes and there shouldn't be any reason for you not to catch them on it. Spoons, plugs, flies, streamers will all take their share of lakers. Pick a finger (watch out for the middle finger, it could be habit forming) and fish it a few times, more lakers will be in your freezer than you can eat.

Thanks Musky for the link. That does help clarify some of the issues. Found these comments to be helpfull..... "There don't seem to be chronic problems in the fleet from moisture being adsorbed by ethanol because of vented boat fuel tanks. Problems have all been traced to contamination issues caused by poor housekeeping that allows mixing of ethanol with MTBE or water." "Ethanol acts like a cleaning agent and will loosen years of varnish buildup in an engine or fuel tank. Without good fuel filters, these dissolved fuel system wastes can cause problems for a boater." .....so from that last paragraph it would seem the older cars/trucks are just as susceptible to the same problems. I guess we don't need to panic though. Knowing how to deal with it should become common knowledge once Ethanol makes a bigger headway into our fuels. Maybe some of the old closed down farms in New York can go into the corn growing business. I wonder how many guys will be selling their boats and buying tractors & corn harvesters  .

This subject was kicked around on other boards last fall. Between those discussions and my dealer I guess the best thing to do for now is be sure to have a full fuel tank before storage, add stabilizer and hope there is a minimum amount of water built up. My dealer says that an empty tank is even worse because of room for more condensation to collect during tempature changes. From what I understand, dry gas and the like will not work for this condition and a fuel/water seperator can hold just so much. I only have a 48 gallon tank so it isn't any big deal to top it off for the winter but some of you guys more than double that. I'm planning on getting a syphon hose that will get down to the bottom of the tank, (easier said than done) and pull out that gasoline this spring and mix it in my truck a little at a time. Hopefully if there is any water in there it will come out during the syphoning stage and I'll see it in the collection can. It will be interesting to see just how much water does collect if any. I'll try and remember to let you know. That's my plan for now until something better comes along. :? ...to be continued....

...... there also seems to be a little discrimination on this poll  we'll have to start another area that is made for old guys (people) with too much equipment Can't wait to see who starts the poll on "How many boats do you have??"
-
I'm not as sick as you guys. I only have 15 trolling and 3 spinning setups. Also a couple spare rods & reels just in case something breaks. Got out of ice fishing years ago and my son took all that stuff along with a couple spinning outfits. Once you get over 50 then you'll start to lighten up the load a little .

If we had a picture of the year contest that would definitely would be a contender for 1st place. I love it!!
