  1. LMS 337 DF I have fished as deep as 300' with this unit & have no problem seeing bait, fish & my downrigger weights. This unit is now obsolete, so you could only get one as a left over, used, or as an updated left over model. This unit is also a GPS. I have had my eye on the new HD units, & if this one gives up, I will be getting one of those with the most power & for sure dual frequency.
  2. Left hand side of the screen is 50KHZ (much wider cone angle), right hand side is 200KHZ. On the left hand side, the broad lines across the screen are the downrigger weights, other lines (arches are fish) & there is a streaker fish after the top rigger. I told my buddy to watch that pole & sure enough it popped & we had a nice low 20 lb salmon on. Good sonar will greatly increase your success fishing. Be sure to get the dual transducer option, & you will have the best of both worlds. My sonar reads bottom cruising at 35 mph to depths of 500', & will also show bait & fish.

  4. Speed & down temp get a Fishawk X-4, best unit out there!
  5. The two BJ Brutes I have do have auto stop & also adjustable retrieve speed. At first, I slowed the retrive speed down to get used to how quick they really are, after the first trip using them, I stopped doing this & now let them run wide open all the time. There is no cheesey belt drive to fail, as these riggers are geared direct drive.
  6. I routinly run 2 twenty pound sharks below 200' with the booms 8' feet apart, & have never had a tangle. Not sure if your manual rigger booms will handle a 20 lb shark, but after you run these for a summer, I for one would not want to arm wrestle you!!!! Get some Bigjon brutes (best rigger out there), they bring the 20 lb shark to the top from 200' very quickly!!!
  7. Remember, the longer the rod you use, the more torque the fish puts on you, so shorter rods allow you to put much more torque on the fish!
  8. The X-4 is the best unit out there!
  9. Shimano 8' Talora Roller rod, six years on a pair, & they work great, & have not skipped a beat.
  10. There is no problem affording an observer hair back (money is certainly not the issue)! I just don't have room for them, & you don't have complete assurance that the observer is a person that you would want on your boat. We have been throught this before, observers are not needed, just go to the polygraph for the top 5 places, & there will be no issues!! The observer must go for the Pro AM to grow, kinda like "if the glove doesn't fit you must acquit!!!
  11. Get rid of the observer, then smaller boats could fish for the big money.
  12. You get what you pay for, after all the speed & temp unit should last at least ten years, & dividing the price difference by the time makes the cost difference minimal over the lifespan of the unit. I have been using the same Fishawk (FH) for the last 15 years, & upgraded the probe last year. I just bought a new complete FH unit, as I wanted the new display, & the luxury of a back up probe. Get the best unit you can afford!!!
  13. The trouble with tribles, wasn't that a Star Trek show???
  14. These have been working great for me. Streakers in this shot Olcott in the Spring
  15. My bracket for my X-4 is attached to the transon above the waterline, so no "extra holes below the waterline". Tim is very happy with his DR, so he supports it strongly, to each their own. But most people have problems with the coated cable, electrical connections & loosing signal below 150'. The DR also marks speed slower than actual by .5 to .6 mph. My cousin has the DR & it was professionally installed, & during this falls LOC derby we trolled parallel to each other & confirmed that the DR marks speed slower than actual by the amount noted above. He also has no signal below 100'. He has issues with the electrical connections at the boat gunwale loosing signal with the antenna as well. Needless to say his DR has been less than he had hoped for when he laid out the $$$. If you like to fuss with your equipment instead of fishing, don't buy an X-4.
  16. Sounds like a shovel ready project/tourney to me!!
  17. Fishawk X-4 good down to 300', maybe further, as that is as far as I have used it. The others have inherent flaws that will definately cause failure at some point, plus they read slower than actual speed, around .5/.6MPH.
  18. What the hell is a "truckster matures "????
  19. I have tried running inline boards & 300' of copper, but after the second time untangling the copper from my wire lines (cut it off with side cutting pliers), I only used full size boards, so the two lines don't come so close together. If you turn at all using the in line boards, they get together @#*&%((*$@!!!!! Just my experience with Church Walleye boards. I am sure others have been able to do it, but I have not.
  20. Fished Oneida today for a 2 man limit using riggers & Dipseys same set up as before, same area. East wind, & it got snottier as the day wore on. This one was 21" & had shoulders. Six eyes in the hole!!!! MMMMmmmmm! Just getting ready to fillet them!
