  1. Everyone has their own personal choices. All I can say is most of the flashers are knock offs from Hot Spot's original plastic flasher which was the first one on the market. Those that have added rudders onto the flasher can only rotate in one direction. As I've said a change in the action often attracts fish into striking. Just go out west and take a look at their set ups. The majority of fishermen, sport & commercial are using Hot Spots. When I went out there I was surprised I didn't see one using an 8" flasher with a hoochie or fly. They all used the 11" running the hoochie about 42 inches behind the flasher. When I first started using flashers everyone couldn't understand why I had gone back to using dodgers for Chinook. I gave some flashers out to several of the other charter boats in Port Credit. It wasn't long after that it was hard to find a boat out there with at least one flasher down. I can't comment on any of the other makes of flasher as I've never needed to use any other make. Hot Spot has always been a great producer for me!
  2. Well here we go. I'm showing both sides of the flashers. All three flashers are glow in the dark. White Lightning has two glow strips on the back so both sides glow. #1 is White Lightning #2 is Weasel & #3 is Bullfrog
  3. I don't know how many times I've said this on Spoonpullers but the only doctor I let on my boat is my old family doctor and he's too old to spin LOL!
  4. Take a look on Page 2 of the "Tackle Description" under "Hot Spot Agitator Flashers". That gives you details of how I run them off the ball. You can run them directly off the rod also trailing a spoon or an Apex. They are not designed to run a fly behind them as they will not impart any action on the fly. They are for running spoons or body baits behind them. I also sent you a PM.
  5. I'd suggest you invest in these colors: White Lightning, Bullfrog and Weasel. Those three are pretty well the top producers. I use the 11" with cut bait and the 8" with a fly. Now it's been difficult to find the Weasel & White Lightning but Shortwave Marine in Port Credit have them in every Spring but are usually sold out in a week or so. I'd also suggest you get a couple of their new Agitator flashers. I run two in tandem off the ball with a Hot Spot Apex or another spoon running five feet behind and above the Agitators. That combo has been my top producer in the last two years.
  6. I've been Prostaff for Hot Spot for around 30 years so I might be a little prejudice but this makes sense. I just watched a video on Murphy Sportfishing's website out of BC showing the action of a Hot Spot flasher. Every once in a while the flasher changed direction of rotation! That will never happen with any type of flasher that has a rudder attached. One major reason a fish is attracted to a lure is the change of direction. How many times when we've had a chaser have we either started to swing the boat from side to side or run the rigger up & down a couple of times! I rest my case!
  7. I don't normally run spoons behind flashers but you should be able to run them at least with a 4' lead. However since I started using the Hot Spot Agitator that's all I've run behind them. They're specifically designed to run spoons or body baits behind them without interfering with the action of the spoon or body bait. Dodgers are a different kettle of fish. You're trolling a lot slower with a dodger than with a flasher.
  8. Tackleitis I've been Prostaff for Hot Spot for close to 30 years & this is the third year I've been running the Agitators. On one of the outside riggers I run two Agitators off the ball in tandem. What I did was use a 50lb test flurocarbon leader 24" from the ball to the first Agitator & attach the second Agitator 16" behind the first one. Then I run either a 5.5 Apex Popcorn or Rocket 4' above & behind the Agitators. I'll also run an Agitator right off the rod trailing an Apex or a spoon 4 to 5ft behind the Agitator. Agitators will not interfere with the action of any spoon but they aren't designed to trail a fly. My top producer for years was always an 11" Hot Spot Bullfrog flasher & meat but for the past two season the Agitators have been number one.
  9. I was going to put some pics on showing the colors I mentioned but since I'm not a professional photographer I'd suggest going to Hot Spot's website at www.hotspotlures.com
  10. Sturgeonx Hot Spot Apex were the first salmon lures I ever bought over 35 years ago & they're still the most consistent lure I own & i have just about every lure make going. I've been Pro staff for Hot Spot close to 30 years & I've fished Lake O from Port Darlington in the east to Port Weller in the west but mostly out of Port Credit. For the last few seasons my top producers have been a 5.5 Rocket, 5.5 Popcorn, 5.5 Chartreuse Haze, 5.5 Stinnson, 5.5 Glow Jelly UV & 4.5 chrome/green scale. The last two seasons I've been running them with the Agitator flashers. Those flashers won't interfere with the action of any lure. I've had good luck directly behind the Agitator & I've also ran two Agitator in tandem off the ball & either the Rocket or Popcorn 5 feet above & behind the Agitators & that's been my top producer for two years. I run them clean either off the rigger or off a dispy. You can run them off a regular flasher. One thing I stress is don't change the leader length of the Apex which is 5 feet. If you change the line keep the same leader length. The one Apex I forgot to mention was the 4.5 & 5.5 Watermelon. If nothing else works that one will. It's been one of my top producers for salmon & steelhead for years.
  11. Can't wait to try these out. They look great & if they work as well as the ones already out then that's all I'll need to put down. From top to bottom: Chartreuse Diamond, Chrome/Chartreuse, Gold Cracked Glass, Glow Diamond.
  12. UV light can penetrate water down to 500 feet. There is still UV light on cloudy days but obviously not as much as on sunny days. Take a look at a UV lure that's just coming out of the water & it'll look the same as when you put it under a black light. You can't charge a UV lure the same as you can a glow lure. As for their ability to catch fish I've had good success with them just about on every day I've been out. Two of my top producers have been the 5.5 Hot Spot Apex Chartreuse Haze & the 8" Green Haze Hot Spot Flasher.
  13. I've been using cut bait behind an 11" Hot Spot flasher for years now & that's always been my first rod down & deepest. I usually run it behind an 11" Bullfrog & I use a Hot Spot Rollerbaiter to hold the cut bait. The thing about the Rollerbaiter is it has a rudder attached that gives it the right roll. Unfortunately you can't get the Rhys Davis cut bait anymore & that was a great piece of meat. For the Rollerbaiter you should use the #3 size for cut bait.
  14. Years ago I bought two Mitchell mooching reels & rods. The first time out we got a nice King on & when we got the fish about twenty feet from the boat the reel seized up. I gave both rigs away & swore I'd never use a mooching reel again. Several years ago I went out with a buddy in his boat. He had an Islander MR2 & an Islander MR3 in his set. It didn't take long to convince me they were the reels to go to. I've got three now & as I said if I never had to use a level wind again I'd be happy. They're one great reel!!
  15. I've been using Islander MR2's & MR3's for a number of years now. If I never used a level wind again after using the Islanders I'd be happy. I've brought in numerous fish on these reels & it's an experience you'll never forget. Yes Islanders are a little high priced but you pay for what you get. They are the top of the line & there's no other mooching reel that comes close to the Islanders!
  16. I'm not Pro Staff for Scotty but I'd never use anything but. They're a great rigger! As for reels there are lots of choices in level winds but since using Islander MR2 & MR3 mooching reels I wouldn't care if I ever used a level wind again.
  17. Before investing in a Black Box do the test & check each of your electronics one at a time to see if it makes a difference in the charge. If you do need one I suggest you get a Scotty. They're the original Black Box but none of them will attract fish just look after the type of charge your putting down your riggers. All I had to do was remove the metal snaps from the rigger cable & put on the plastic ones. Haven't had a problem since.
  18. I've fished out of Port Credit for over 35 years & I've always noticed a good bite starts at 11am. This year we've always got our biggest fish on that bite. The steelhead seem to be in a bit tighter this year too.
  19. Tundra I'd suggest you go to one of the private stores. They'll be able to give you info on what the salmon are hitting rather than just buying gear that catches your eye. Tightlines is a good spot if your fishing Whitby of bluffers area. If you're coming west go in & see Bill at Shortwave in Port Credit, 113 Lakeshore Road East. Bill has all the gear & info you need & his prices are great too!
  20. Went out of Port Credit last Tuesday & ended up 9 for 11. One small King, two 15 & 17lb, & all the rest were bows between 5 & 10lb. Started off in 150 & as soon as I got the lines down we had a double. One on the dipsy out 200' on a 5.5 Apex "Popcorn" & one off the rigger down 40' on a 4.5 chrome/green scale Apex. We moved out into 220' & got a 10lb bow down 110' on 11" Bullfrog & meat. We had hits on every rod except one, including two dipsys. All our hits came on Hot Spot products including 11" Bullfrog flasher, 5.5 Apex Watermelon, 5.5 Apex Popcorn, 4.5 Stinnson & 4.5 chrome/green scale Apex's. The one 5.5 Popcorn I had set up 5' above & behind tandem Agitator flashers on the outside port rigger. The only rod that didn't get a hit I had a 5.5 Apex Rocket which for last season & this season so far has been my top producer. Yep! I'm the Hot Spot Pro Staff for Ontario but I don't shoot the bull as far as what I get the fish on. If they come on another product that's what I say they came on.
  21. Started off with Scotty manuals, switched to electrics & at that time there were no Scotty electrics so I bought Big Jon. After breaking a couple of arms & replacing a motor switched back to Scotty Pro Packs which I've had for at least 15 years. Sorry can't sell them since they'll probably work for another 15 years without a problem. Can't understand why anyone would buy anything else.
  22. I've had a speed & temp for a good number of years but I still look for those bubbles!
