  1. One of the main problems with Walleyes in NY state is that in many waters they do exactly what the Trout, and often the Bass do as well... they go totally contrary to their natural state, and they will suspend and follow bait and not relate to structure.. They are by nature a bottom oriented species.. Just as salmon, browns and rainbow are stream fish, but adapt to their main food source, and alter their lifestyle completely from their natural state walleyes adapt to their primary food source... As we know, food trumps everything else , and fish will go out of habitat, out of temperature etc... When Walleyes are in lakes loaded with Alewives, they get huge but can be tough as hell to catch... The best way to get walleyes in large lakes with big alewife populations is trolling, no question... Smaller, shallower, rocky lakes without big suspended schools of oily baitfish are typically better lakes for jiggers, as are rocky rivers.. Lake erie has a good population of big walleyes, but almost all of them are caught trolling, at least on the NY side.. Might be a few guys jigging and doing well, but they don't talk much... Canadian walleye lakes seem to be much more productive for jiggers, and I would bet money most of those lakes dont have huge populations of schooling big greasy suspending baitfish... bob
  2. Nah, just lots of years doing it, a few good days here and there amongst LOTS of bad ones.. Just remember that walleyes are typically more active and are more apt to feed in low light conditions, and for most of us that means dawn and dusk.. I haven't done it but I bet that fishing in the dead of night with big live bait would be the best method to catch them consistently, but Bullheads and Catfish might be a nuisance in some spots.. If you can get good size healthy live bait, you can drop shot a big live minnow a foot off bottom while jigging as well.. Increases the odds... bob
  3. I don't use use store bought scent ,, but there are some tricks i use at times. that might help some guys.. A live or fresh dead minnow on the jig hook can certainly help on slower days.. It will NEVER hurt to try.. Another trick I use that works fantastic with ANY fish is fish blood.. If I catch a fish or two one day and will be fishing again within a few days here is what I do... I cut some small tapered strips out of the flexible belly/underside of a fish, usually a walleye i have taken home.. While cleaning them , fresh walleyes shed a ton of blood.. I collect as much as i can in a small zip lock bag, and add the belly strips, and put that in the fridge.. GREAT for tipping any type of jig, for any type of fish, and pretty easy to do.. At times I go without the belly strips, but use a hair jig, and drop it into the blood.. soaks that blood up, leaves a scent trail that Killer.... All kinds of critters grab it up , anything from sunnies and trout to big Pike, and of course Bass and Walleyes. typically, I go without and tipping however, and have found that walleyes are not all that hard to catch WHEN they are active!,, thats the key.. Neutral l walleyes are not an easy mark.. You can fish an area thats thick with them and never get a touch.. You would swear they just weren't there. Other times they are as stupid as the dumbest starving bluegill and will readily commit suicide.. It was many years ago, but i once caught 26 keeper size Walleyes standing on the same rock in the susquehanna river, between 3 PM and 6 PM in bright sunlight. Kept my limit, went back the next night just for catch and release, caught 6... Went back next night, not a bite.. They move, they blow hot and cold as far as feeding/activity, and they can be stupid and easy to catch, or smart as hell and impossible to catch... As i said earlier, the less light the better.. Try getting out next time before dawn, and fish hard till about 8 am... For me, thats prime time... Also , 6 PM and onward into darkness.. The angles of the sun as it sets don't allow deep light penetration, and the walleyes are more active than they are during the late morning/afternoon.. This is NOT to say you can't catch walleyes mid day, you can ,but your chances diminish if you are jigging.. Daylight hours are fine when deep trolling for suspended Walleyes relating to bait pods, but jigging for structure oriented fish is best when light penetration is low... At least from my experience... bob
  4. Personally, I have found nothing as good as soft plastics.. They work as well or better than "high priced" lures of any type.. I have been jigging Walleyes for 28 years, ever since I moved to NY state, and my #1 go to lure thats proven to be my most productive by far, is a plain old Mr Twister in chartreuse on a 1/4 oz jig head.. Nothing better, at least for me... Another good plastic has been a 2 1/2 -3 inch Sluggo or FinS in shad color.. Opaque silver on top black on bottom.. I have also caught some big Walleyes on Gulp..Also at times Silver/Black rapalas are very effective when fish are shallow... I have caught VERY few walleyes during the day while jigging... My best times for jigging them are from around 4:30/ 5 AM until about 7:30 am., and then from about 6 PM till 9 PM this time of year.. Low light conditions for me have always been by far the best time. for jigging . I personally catch more Walleyes in November than any other month for some reason.... bob
  5. Yes they are.. Not in big numbers, but the ones we have are BIG! There was a 12 pounder caught on a nightcrawler about 5 or 6 years ago, made the local paper. I found one dead at the south end a few years back, and saw a few huge ones taken from Fall Creek during the rainbow trout spawn in early spring,, Some are caught there every single year, and they are carp sized.. So yes they live in the lake, but you could most likely fish for them every single day for the rest of your life and never catch one.. Other species in the lake that are that way as well.. White Perch, White bass.. saw one good size white bass years ago, dead, so I know they are in the lake but never caught one or saw one caught,,, bob
  6. Well, at least you guys could fish.. Down here in the southern tier, the susquehanna is barely within its banks, is running high and wild with trees, bushes, garbage cans tumbling wildly in its churning chocolate milk colored water.. If i am very lucky, I might be able to fish for walleyes in a week... or two... bob
  7. Someone might be trying to get a population started.. The people that lived in the areas where these fish are native love to eat them.. Thats how several invasive fish species got started in the US,, Same with Snakeheads... Globalism carries a steep price.. https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/how-did-snakehead-fish-get-united-states?qt-news_science_products=0#qt-news_science_products http://www.tsusinvasives.org/home/database/monopterus-albus
  8. That motor was for sale TEN years ago!.. So no, its no longer here... bob
  9. Gotta disagree.. i brought an older mid 80's Merc 9.5 to them for a water pump.. Hour job maybe, no biggie right??.. $350 to install an impeller that cost them less than $20.. NEVER used them again, NEVER will, and I tell every person I can why .. bob
  10. Update... I put a little gas/oil mix in the tank, and she started first pull and is running just fine. I realize its only a 2 hp, but there are not many good running gas outboards out there for $40.. bob
  11. 1970's Gas 2 HP with tank on top.. Its kind of on the ugly side.. Good compression -good spark. Could use some paint on the cowl... Brand new water pump installed.. was running great last summer, pumping water just fine,, have not tried starting it this year.. If it won't run for you for, let me know, and I'll take it back without a single question, The $40 isn't going to make me rich or poor.., Thats about as fair a deal as I can give. If I get the time I'll try and get it in a tank or big bucket and get it started up. The water pump alone was almost as much as I am selling the motor for.. I have an almost new 2 HP, and a very nice 4 HP and simply don't need this one and its taking up space.. No, I don't get up to rochester very often, and at this price I would rather not deliver.. $40 takes it away... bob
  12. I simply don't fish for bass or panfish in cayuga or seneca any longer.. I have been doing that type of fishing at skaneateles or Keuka pass few years... Same thing happens with sunfish.. remove a sunfish from its bed, and its over run by those ugly little bastards.. makes me sick, when I think of the fishing I and my sons enjoyed on cayuga and seneca every summer.. I hope those ugly slimy little demons NEVER make it to the Finger lakes where they currently don't exist... bob
  13. Light colored bedliner will work great... So will plain old deck paint that has a bit of sand sprinkled on it.. Thats the way it was done by mariners/navy men for hundreds of years.. let the deck paint get tacky and sprinkle some fine sand on top. Never understood carpeting in a fishing boat myself.. Rots and keeps the wood its glued to wet so it rots as well.. bob
  14. they are hard to find in the extreme... couple years ago when I bought the boat [1980 grumman 14 ft.-side console], it had a 9.5 merc with a remote steer kit installed.. it was badly underpowered, so i tried to find a good used remote steer short shaft 20-25 HP, and it was impossible .. i had to extend the transom tp accept a 20 inch shaft motor, and still 95% of long shaft motors in the 25-30 HP range are tillers... not only that, but so far i can buy a 70 or 90 HP for what guys are asking for a 25... in any case,, still looking, long or short shaft at this point.. bob
  15. Can't use a tiller,, boat has a side console,, need a remote steer... Will also consider an 15-18 or 20 HP remote steer.. Prefer a long shaft but will consider a short shaft as well.. the boat is old, beat up, and not very valuable so i am not looking to spend a fortune on a nearly new motor.. can't use a 4 stroke, too heavy... Looking for a good runner thats been well maintained... bob
  16. actually, the white paint and decals have gotten smeared up from gas, and it looks uglier than this now.. Hence the $50 price tag...
  17. In case anyone is interested.. If for whatever reason this motor doesn't start or is a headache that isn't worth fixing, i would gladly take it back and give your money back.. i don't particularly need $50, and would not bother trying to sell a worthless motor to make $50.. Last thing i want is to sell my headache to someone else for a measly $50.. so yeah, i guarantee it works, simply give me a call and I'll give your money back.. I have been screwed myself on several motors for a lot of money over the years, and it pisses me off.. would not do it to someone else... bob
  18. New water pump, good compression. . was running smoothly late last summer last time I had it started, Water pump alone cost $20, and I installed it last september and it was not used after, just started up to check the pump.. Its kind of ugly, but is solid and intact.. This is the MATE 2 HP model from the 1970's with tank on top.. $50 takes it away...
  19. No thanks,,, My Grumman 17 has a 70, and the grumman 14 has a 28,, that 16 with a 48 is in the middle of both and there is really no need ... Still looking for that 25 or thereabouts... bob
  20. Long shaft remote steer only please.. Not easy to find these I realize that.. Boat is a Grumman 14 with remote steer and controls with a 28 HP long shart.. Its actually a bit overpowerd so i don't want to go above about 30 HP.. a 20 0r 25 would be best, but I will go over or under depending on what I can find.. I have already inquired about getting my 28 fixed up, but am not sure its cost effective.. I will also consider buying a complete boat/motor trailer set up with a long shaft engine in that HP range, and just using the motor and controls, and selling the boat and trailer , or just replacing my boat/motor and trailer with whatever I buy... Let me know what you have . Not looking for a newer high dollar set up-. this motor is for my 14 footer, I also have a 17 center console with a 70 HP that I use on bigger water.. . bob
  21. Anyone have a phone #, or an email?/.. Tried PM"ing Hank a couple times from this site, never got a response.. I would like to have him look at an OB motor for me this winter, but can find nothing online about L&M Marine, and the only way I know to contact him is via PM.. If anyone can help I would appreciate it, or hopefully hank sees this, and can get back to me.. Info can be emailed to me instead of responding publicly... bob [email protected]
  22. Yeah I was 100% sure it was brown, but the NJ DEC says no.. However, who knows.. they might think its a salmon if browns were not stocked in the lake where it was caught, but that means nothing.. Different trout/ salmon species get thrown in with the "correct" ones at times.. Several years ago, I found a freshly stocked dead LL salmon here in Candor in Catatonk creek, that somehow got mixed with the small browns they stock here.. bob
