Erabbit, you might be onto something. I guess when I'm out this weekend that's a test I will do. Run both divers at zero and see what I get. Like I said it just doesn't make sense to me when both divers weigh approximately the same amount and both have approximately the same amount of surface area for planning purposes. Yes, both are wire set up's. I have even tried to switch the dipsy's from one rod set up to another. Both set ups are using the 9 foot GLT classic Dipsy rods with seven stranded wire. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Fat Trout, yes that was on my mind as well. This spot seem to be getting worse and sooner or later it is going to get me. I currently only fish on the fingers therefore I have been able to get away with it. I am hoping to try the big lake for the first time sometime next week or the week after and that is why I need to fix it now. I also was thinking about fixing it the way I said and then flipping the line so the 300 spot was further inside if that makes sense.

Fishinlslife, not sure. I have never really checked to see if the entire into the water is different. If I am using the same holders, location on the boat and rod setup I just assumed it was not a variable. Something I will look at next time I am out. Thank you. Thank you pjprod, yes I am aware that slide diver can be upgraded to the heavy weight to make them run deeper. This is why I checked the weights of the two divers. With them being the same I just don't understand why they don't work the same. Yes, dipsey are a fixed leader length and slide diver are adjustable. I have had days when fish would not touch a lure behind a dipsy with a 5 or 6 foot leader to the spoon/flasher fly and then increased that length to 8, 10 or 12 feet and it is a totally different dipsy setup. Game on. The bad thing now is that I have to hand line in every fish. This is the advantage of the slide diver and the reason why I was asking the question.

How to fix a bad kink in my wire dipsy rod? I have noticed that approximately 300 feet or so into my 1000 foot spool of wire I have a bad spot. I would like to cut out the bad spot and re-terminate the two pieces of wire back together. Any suggestion how to do this? I was thinking about using the wire knot with a #10 spro swivel in between the two pieces? Opinions?? Thank you for your time.

Generally speaking I use slide divers in the spring when fish are above 40 feet and once the fish go below 40 feet I switch over to Dipsy divers. I have developed my own dive charts for these devices using a TD fishhawk. One of the things I can't understand, a slide diver weighs 5.12 ounces and a Dipsy diver #1 weighs 4.97 ounces. Both divers are basically a #1 Dipsy diver except one (the slide diver) has the ability to be very stealthy. So my question is, why won't a slide diver that weighs approximately the exact same amount as a Dipsy diver go to the same depths? Are the action of these two diver different? I just don't understand why if I have a Dipsy diver #1 at a certain depth with so many feet of wire out why I cannot switch over to a slide diver and get the exact same depth? I have tried switching a slide diver over to a fixed diver and I still cannot get the exact same depth. Don't understand. I have always assumed that if I ran a slide diver and put a spoon back 50 feet behind the diver that is what was causing the diver to rise up to a level that was not the same as a #1 Dipsy diver. That does not make sense to me but I just don't understand why the Slide Diver is so different from the standard #1 Dipsy diver that weighs the exact same amount. Been a little slow posting this because I've been trying to get my scales verified. Great morning of fishing on a North troll from Myers to Rocky Doc in 300 to 400 feet of water. Best water was 45 to 70 feet down. Used two Dipsy's rods with spin doctors and Iron Duke trolling flies. The other rod was a combination of downrigger or 10 color leadcore using spoons. Caught six silvers and 11 Lakers during 5 1/2 hours. Anything colored blue for a spoon was great. The UV wild child and the double glow Iron Duke trolling flies behind any glow spin doctor was awesome. The big Laker in the photo was caught on a crush glow spin doctor and a double glow iron Duke trolling fly. The fish weighed 14 pounds on my scale and I wasn't sure if I could believe that. All I know it is the biggest Laker I have ever caught on my boat. Mike thanks again for your flies and suggestions.

Well I've had enough of the manual downrigger's. I would like to go to electrics next year. My current boat set up is, starting motor in the back connected directly to the motor and a deep cycle battery connected up front to a mini koto trolling motor. The starting motor also powers my fishfinder and both pumps for the boat. From a electrical point of view what do I need to do or how should I change over to electric downrigger's? I believe I understand I will be limited by the alternator in my boat motor as to the amount of current my downrigger's can draw?? I I think I need to total up all of the max current draw of all my electronics stuff and make sure it does not exceed the rating of my alternator?? If I do I will not be able to charge my battery and therefore it will eventually stop running the motor. As you can tell I believe I'm a little fuzzy but I think I'm close. Other things that may be important, motor is a 25hp Yamaha four stroke, boat is a tiller model, and current manual downrigger's are old Riviera's. Don't want anything fancy or fast from a electric downrigger standpoint just want to make it a little easier on my back and arms. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. So if you are new to trolling for the Kings it sound like fishing in the afternoon until sunset is the best time. However being a small boat owner (16'), and assuming no afternoon storms would you recommend this? One of my concern is the less boat traffic. Less help if something goes wrong. Would be going out of Oswego hopefully within the next two weeks or so. I wish i knew other people going up so I had a buddy system. Any suggestion or comments appreciated. I live about 10 minutes from Myers and I know of a couple people that had problems with them. Both from a time and cost stand point. However I have heard good things about Johnson boat yard in Ithaca but have never used them before. Hope it works out for you. Was in a similar situation this past spring. Good luck!!!! John, that's funny you called that a Bellis Fly. I had forgotten that I grabbed one of those at the Watkins Glen show this past spring. One of my other rigs that caught fish also was that fly behind a large big Al flasher. I was quite surprised they would hit that just behind the big flasher. Wanted to send a shout out to Iron Duke Trolling Flies. Been having trouble getting a consistent lake trout bite on spin doctors and fly combos so I gave Mike a call. I purchased some of his flies and he answered some questions for me. Mike was very helpful and willing to answer my questions. Below is a photo of the first lake trout caught using one of his flies. Ended up running two SD/fly rigs for about 2 1/2 hours and went seven for eight. One rig was on a downrigger and the other was off a number one wire Dipsy 190 out. This time of year we are usually fishing out in the middle over deep water. Quite offend I will find large marks on the screen down around 150 feet or deeper. My assumption is these could be good fish suspended in very cold water. Lone wolfs if you would. Who knows they maybe small salmon or something else. Just curious as to what they could be. More then likely they are Lake Trout. Other then that you are correct generally don't fish below 75 - 100 feet. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
