  1. You can run just about any rod on a downrigger. The spey or mooching rod would be a choice, however it depends on your choice of quarry. Power of the rod is by far the single most important choice in respect to power of the fish. Rod length is second. Big fly reels with adequate drag and size would be next. Mooching, or spey rod would have enough power in the butt end but too long for easy work around the downrigger and back of boat. Netting would be a real challenge as well as the rod length being the advantage to the fish in leverage. A really skilled angler would have fun with a mature king, but it would be a challenge for sure. Many disadvantages to the downrigger style of fishing with that type of rod. 5. Weigh station? West end...Try the marina, Lake Breeze at Point Breeze. Talk to Gatlin, I think. Not sure. Boat Doctor in Olcott...maybe.. Worth a try! Mark Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  6. Cool Les!..I sent ya pm earlier wondering how it turned out. Guess that answers it!..good try despite challenging conditions..I know that area was changing hard with temp gradient really tight inside. Current was probably ripping west. Usually really tough to get programs running right in those conditions. Glad he was able to experience at least a little drag burn! Mark Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  7. Nothing like fishing the fence! Pretty quiet, except for the occasional ships...moving through on the "inside"...lol! Feels kinda surreal out if sight of land all around...then the screaming reel brings you back to your senses! Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  8. Been there....st elmos fire. Happened to me once in Quebec on the Baskatong. My buddy also watched his monofilament line hovering o er the water in an arc and pulling!...had a 3.5 ounce KO Wobbler spoon on the other end cast out 150 feet. Lure went in the water...line went straight up.One other time on Canadarago Lake in Otsego county. Black cloud, no rain, no thunder, quietly drifting walleyes no power. Wind blew suddenly in circles and buzzy noise from behind me started. What in hell?...looking around as now it really sounded electronic with a snapping then building buzz snap buzz snap! My rods standing in holders next to the console were arcing blue sparks to the metal hand rail 2 inches! Quickly grabbed them...got bit real hard...and ordered the wife and kids on the deck..Lay down! Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  10. Good job sticking it out to deeper water. I looked at sea surface temps yesterday and saw the tight gradient cold water in close. Figures that's why current was bad on your presentation. No doubt there will be some turmoil going on off the oak for a while. Nice catch! 31 lines out are probably most stable off the oak right now. West in olcott has warmer water inside..currents will be cranking! Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  11. Is not the boat so mich, but the rods! Graphite is a conductor, so is wire especially copper! Of course not safe in any electric storm in anything, but I have had really weird experiences with graphite rods...very scary, even when no thunder lightning any where yet...just big black cloud! 12. Good luck Les! ...hope you nail some screamer for him!... Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  13. It just moved, you just need to move with it. Actually as just posted the lake is already re-adjusting, but I wouldn't get stuck on an inshore idea of a bite like we have seen and all became accustomed to and being 1/2 mile offshore all this season. Once it has moved offshore, it most likely will be there for a while at this stage. Be flexible, check the inside waters early on a south and westerly wind, but move out if nothing showing up. Northeast will keep it offshore 99% now. Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  14. Just bring some gas and a northbound attitude, launch further east.... Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  16. I was thinking of the 72 inch I pilot terrova for my boat. All it needs to do on mine would be steer and supplement the 9.9 kicker on the back. No need for huge thrust just to guide the bow. Waves could be trouble but even momentarily cavitation wouldn't seem to be big issue in my guess. My freeboard up front is a bit high as well. 72 shaft inches is 6 feet. Thinking about it! 17. Still 73 surface at the fence north of Rochester on the buoy station reading Burn some gas north and look for the break and color...move more to easterly ports like Oak or sandy. Beyond 450 fow would be my bet...but I loose sometimes..it's only a nice boat ride in that case.. Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  19. Yes!...wired up like me..according to Ray K.. I stole all the outhouse wiring in Lyntucky to feed my need for copper! Now everyone has to poooo..in the dark.[emoji90] [emoji102] Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  20. Les is right about this model. I believe it has a 30lb mono capacity of 330 yards. In the case of your original question on 45 lb copper the answer would be yes for the 300 foot load and a 900 foot 30 lb power pro braid. It will fit very nicely with blood run 45 in 300 ft...vs..399! I know how big thumbs work too!Les has pointed out the 32 lb version of copper and that will work also for 400 feet and the 900 braid backing as he mentioned. 21. No ..not even without backing...way to small a reel for big copper Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  24. Here is something I just noticed last Wednesday. Also noticed you are using torpedoes as I am. I was in clear water for 30 feet down I could see the torpedo going down. I never really watched it go down in detail like this before, but what it did was alarming! Normally it runs straight and true at fixed depth and speed, 12 lb one. When I let it down high speed, like free fall on a scotty, the torpedo turned and spun around. Stopped it would track straight, but falling quick it turned. I use ball swivels for terminal attachment to the weight, but if one of those gets sticky I would get it off there. Not sure this an issue with your weight decent speed, but I have just seen this happen over and over last Wednesday on high speed drops with mine.
