  1. I would definitely make sure you have downriggers. I have a 16 ft and fish by myself at times and when the fish are in close its nice to be able to combat fish and with downriggers you can turn alot sharper without as many tangles. Also when you do have a fish on if by yourself there are less tangles with shorter lines as opposed to dispeys and other long lines out. I had a big king on this summer (25 lbs guessing), by myself and the only time he got tangled was when I was trying to net him but luckily he got loose as it was on the downrigger cable and popped the other line. Also I was able to turn the boat enough to be able to fight him without hittng other boats as I was doing circles at one point. The other boats were far enough away or went around me when they noticed I was fighting a fish.
  2. It happens. I know I think I tied it on good only to almost loose a stringer. Had a buddy hit his stringer with the motor in Canada which had a nice mess of pike on it, luckily he saw it and was able to grab the stringer before it got too far. Pretty funny to watch. We just happened to be next to them and they were horsing around when he hit it. One of the pike had a pretty good gash on it from the prop.
  3. Was up in Barnes Corners area this past weekend and flushed a bunch of grouse at least 3-4 per day. Found crab apples in one and purple berries (arrowwood maybe) in the other. Seemed like most were in or near alders or swampy areas near good grouse cover. The hot weather sucked and was rough on the dog.
  4. We were up near Barnes Corners this past weekend and were finding the grouse in the alder bottoms next to younger trees.

  7. Last year around this same time we got a few lakers off Ibay in 40 ft of water and a few decent kings. If I remember correctly the surface water temp was around 40 degrees. So i would guess it is the colder water that brings them in shallower. Are the docks in at the launch?
  8. Good call. Also when buying new flares check the expiration date as I bought some a few years ago that only had a year or two before they expired.
  9. Thanks. That's what I thought looked at the traffic cam and it showed south end mostly still ice covered.May try next weekend.
  10. How is the bay looking for ice cover, hoping to get out saturday for maybe browns and perch?
  11. Botchilism has been around for many years, I was a wildlife tech for DEC and we would walk ontario and erie's shore every week to look for dead birds (mostly loons, longtailed ducks and some gulls). I would have to look up the health advisories on eating longtails (thought it might be none or one per month) but not sure. Seems like some years and times of year it was more prevalent.
  12. Not sure where you guys are hunting, but by Iroquois (Tonawanda and Oak orchard State lands) they usually stock once before, then once during the next two weeks. But I have been out scouting for ducks and seems like the pheasants have alot more land to hide out in with the dry conditions this year. Numerous times over the years my dogs have flushed pheasants from swampy areas. So I'm thinking they are more spread out this year.
  13. Jakeybaby, The DEC has had the youth hunt in place for a few months but Coumo has a bill on his desk that can nix the youth hunt (not allowing firearms for deer during an archery season). But he still has not signed it as far as I know and supposedly is waiting till after elections to decide to sign it or not. So DEC had things together but yet again politics get involved in wildlife management.
  14. yep still for sale. $600 is the lowest i will go, otherwise I will wait till next year to sell it.
  15. I'd like to get rid of it and say yes to you, but I think it would be too small for your boat.
