Small Outboard Throttle Cable, Lube or Replace?
Todd in NY replied to Todd in NY's topic in This Old Boat
Hey Pap, it's a tiller steer model. The more I think about it the more convinced I am that a sticky old throttle cable might be what wore out the grip and helix parts. I've only had the motor for 18 months, and it was never easy to twist the throttle grip. It wouldn't stick at high throttle, but it was pretty tough getting it to twist for more speed. It wasn't as easy to turn as my 15 HP model was. -

Small Outboard Throttle Cable, Lube or Replace?
Todd in NY replied to Todd in NY's topic in This Old Boat
Thanks hard knox! I've located a couple of cables online already, but I wanted someone else's opinion first. This motor is in pristine condition, so it wouldn't surprise me if it's the original cable. -
Small Outboard Throttle Cable, Lube or Replace? The throttle cable on my 1980 Evinrude 7.5 is difficult to move by hand. I just replaced the grip, helix, and pin parts, but wanted to see WHY the old grip parts had difficulty adjusting the throttle. So, while I had the grip and helix off the tiller handle I attempted to move the throttle cable by hand and I was surprised by how much effort it took. Should the throttle cable be easy to move by hand, like a new steering cable? It doesn't feel right to me but I have never had to replace one before. I'm thinking I probably need a new throttle cable. Is there a way to grease the cable? What are your thoughts? Thanks!

My 1987 center console with an outboard was hard to steer with both hands. So I installed a new steering cable and helm and it is now steerable with one finger.

Nice looking boat, priority! For any potential buyers out there, these boats fish real nice, and they trailer easily with a 1/2 ton truck. I have a 1987 21' Trophy similar to the one and we use it for fishing and camping, from Lake Ontario to Cranberry Lake. Three adults can sleep in the cuddy, and my dinette converts to a 4th bed. These are also great boats on the Finger Lakes. My 305 OMC burns about 10 gallons of gas trolling all day on Lake O. It's a great boat for a family of four, especially if you trailer it to different lakes. Here's mine... -

That'll do it Jim. No splash well, so the full height transom keeps those pesky 3-5 ft following swells out of the boat.

This boat fishes great. Jim, try to post a pic of the motor mount. It makes the boat handle like a 26 foot boat rather than a 22 footer. That 135 Merc idles right down without bags, buckets or a trolling plate. Good luck with the sale!

Foul hooker, I sent you an email, from ballistics04. I didn't figure in the cost to ship it to California, which would be around $18.85, plus PayPal fees. Rather than add $20+ to my $70 selling price, how do you feel about splitting those costs and call it $80 shipped? Basically we'll be splitting the shipping and PayPal cost. If that sounds fair to you, let me know, and I'll send the PayPal request ASAP for $80 total, which would include shipping. Thanks, Todd -
