  1. i believe that like most things that are mass produced today, the motors are a sealed unit. Kinda like the electric window motors in cars today. They don't repair them, they throw the old one away and replace it with a new one. But I know I'd be hard pressed to find a window motor for a 1970 Buick. They can't keep old stock on the shelf forever. I'm another guy that has had a set of Mag 10's longer than I can remember (20 - 30 years) and I've only had to replace the switch on one of them. That sure sounds like a life time of service to me. I guess I'm lucky right now not to have worries over my warranties. I do have a set of mag 20's too and they are in fine shape. I guess what I'm saying is that I'm very satisfied with the years of service my downriggers have provided me. If I were in the situation stated above, and I didn't want to pop for a new rigger, I'd look in the adds for a used one that I could use for parts. But that's just me.
  2. Looks like a Storm Wiggle Wart to me. Storm has quit the business last year. Here is a page with some picks. http://www.steelheadangler.savings-direct.com/Crankbaits/Wiggle%20Warts
  3. I'll add my photos of the trip too! Lots of scenery and not much for fish. It wasn't that we didn't give it a good try. http://s523.photobucket.com/albums/w360 ... 4c2c52.pbw
  4. Usually there is only two reasons for an alarm. One is an overheating condition due to water pump impeller failure and the other is due to the lack of oil in the motor. In either case the sending units could be suspect.
  5. Rod - I somewhat understand I guess. We all try to support our own communities and friends. I guess when we sell items, it would be wise to stipulate that it is only available to a select group or location of folks and not the members of LOU. Many thanks and good luck with your sale.
  6. Rod - I'll take all if you are willing to mail them to Calif. Please contact .... [email protected]
  7. Stick baits are the most popular bait choice on the West coast. First test the Lure action next to the boat and establish the best boat speed for it. Then clip on and send it down the wire. Rapala F9's and Abu Garcia Tormentors (110 mm) have been big producers for me. ( Abus are not sold in this country.) Others are Thunder sticks and Trophy Sticks. If you plan on fishing deep for Lake Trout (150 - 200 feet ) I would recommend plastic bodies over Balsa wood. ( Compression will crack the finish )
  8. I certainly don't intend for my question to start the usual mine is better than yours arguments. There are a lot of downriggers marketed today and in different areas of the Country one brand may be more preferred over another. I have had hands on experience with Scotty and Cannon but have never had a hand on any other brand. I happen to own two sets of Cannons. (The mag 10's and DT20"s.) I believe that my interest is in the build quality and the long time service of the rigger. An example is that on my older Mag 10's I had to replace a toggle switch. Now keep in mind these riggers must be 20+ years old now. I've seen ads for Walkers and other brands and have a curiosity what you guys prefer. I've seen the Bert's track system and may choose to install that on my big boat.
  9. Cals Drag Greese or Shimao Drag Greese is what is recommended. Alan Tani has posted a complete tear down and build of a 500lc. All the other Shimano LC's are the same. It's too big a file to post on here is the URL. http://www.360tuna.com/forum/f72/shimano-tekota-500-lc-rebuild-5030/
  10. This storm is a Lulu guys. What Stan didn't say was the wind has been horrific as the fronts continue to move in and out. The worst is yet to hit us tomorrow. My power finally came back on after being out for several hours. This is a warning that you will be hit too! Thank God we have a generator and that we have lots of bottled water on hand. A giant oak tree fell today on our local gas station. I call that irony as the prices were going up again.
  11. I've been searching for Rhys Davis rigs and can't seem to find them. Was told there was some sort of conflict. That kind of thing does happens. Is there some other type of rig or rigs you guys are using or prefer? I guess i should state that I will be using 4 to 6" bait on Lakes here in Calif.
  12. The older Mag 10's used a Allen screw to not only anchor the wheel but to also conduct an electrical charge for the cable up surface stop. Several of the riggers had a short screw installed and the electric contact with the cable was not made. I talked with a service tech and he gave me the longer screws to install. No problem after that.
  13. Something I would recommend that you have added when having new canvas made is Velcro sewn in between the snaps where the top meets windshield, windows and enclosure. It keeps the wind and water out. I chose the heavy duty Top Gun material. It is the same stuff that truckers use to cover their trailers. This photo is where the cabin drop down connects at the side.
  14. I just went through an inspection at the ramp. (Calif.) The life of the flares is 24 mo. which I didn't know. I have a gun box kit) I have a few more months before replacement. You can keep the outdated flares on board but they must be kept separate from the gun and the new flares. I was written up on the inspection for my horn not working (not ticketed). Horn worked fine when I got home. Go figure? Check all your running lights. If you use a trailer, check the lights on it too! This nice guy had a check list and he went through everything including windshield wipers. There is no reason for anyone to **** about an inspection. It can save the lives of your friends and yourself. I know my wife would be very upset with me if I didn't come home and give her the daily ration of crap.
  15. The improved clinch knot is one that I have used religiously for more years than I want to admit but now I'm perplexed. I just ordered some of Sigg's flies and was informed that I should use 40# leader between the dodger and the fly. What knot do you suggest? I know this sounds crazy but out West here, I try to use as light a leader as I can get away with and tie the strongest knot without becoming obtrusive. I fish for Browns mostly these days but uncle Stanley (Stan) has me wearing the magnetic strip off of my credit cards to take after Coho Salmon. I search back a couple of pages and didn't find anything about rigging flies or different ways to rig flies. I kind of understand the concept of the heftier leader adding more motion to the fly. Thanks, Dale
  16. Well okay Stan ........ so I finally see some Trout.... Where's all the Bass you normally brag about. I placed my order with Sigg's this AM. I'll be trying them out in this part of the country soon.
  17. This information about Penn Reels may come a little late, but for its value, the 340gt and the 345gt have the same spool size. Also the spools are the same as size as the penn 113hl and 113hlw, respectively. They are not interchangeable because the spool shafts are different. This information was provided from a post of Alan Tani's.
  18. Sure has been some very questionable stuff going on in Washington. Supposedly it's for our behalf. My mind set is that, my life, my retirement and future has been cut short. I'm thinking of mailing a pink slips to my representatives. Possibly if enough citizens showed their personal displeasure this way, if any, the powers to be might take a longer look at their recent actions and performance.

  20. Damn shorething- I'm talking about a motor vehicle license not a jet liner license. I know everything is expensive in NY. That's why everybody moved to Florida.
  21. Stan - You already know but for the others I'm 64. Just received my Calif. drivers license renewal in the mail. ($35.00) Hope I'm around for the next one.
