  1. Hey, I think you were the person that answered my radio check. You had just caught a steelhead. Sounds like you had better day than me. It was nice to be out anyway on a day like that. I ran spoons on my riggers and sliders with just the two releases. I ran stick baits flat and on the leadcore. I tried running anywhere from 2-7 colors. I was running anywhere from 2-4 MPH on my SOG, and 1.5-3 MPH down speed on the ball (sub troll). Did you find a speed that was working any better? There doesn not seem to be much of a pattern with this cold clear water.
  2. Hi All, Had more newbies out this weekend. It was a very slow day, but knock on wood, the new boat has not got skunked yet. Better still, everyone I have taken out over the last season and so far this year has caught there first and/or biggest fish ever. This time we only managed one steelhead about 2 pounds, but it was a first and biggest for a girl that was new to Lake O fishing. We started out at daybreak in close, and made a few passes from shore out 15'. Nothing doing. Saw a few other boats, also doing nothing. From there we went NE towards Sodus. I had 2 riggers with free sliders, 2 four lcores on side planers, and one down the chute. We hit 204' and picked up the steelhead on a fire tiger Jr. Thunderstick flatlining down the middle. We had 2 rigger releases, but I am guessing they were on the sliders because we did not hook up. We went out to 250 NE of Sodus with a group of boats, but did not pick anything up. I marked very few fish or bait balls in that clear water anywhere. It was however a beautiful day on the water for a boat ride. Next time out will be June, and we will be out with wire divers hunting unless we finally get some colored water. Cheers, Tom
  3. Should these Hudson reports be posted in a different location from the Lake Ontario topics? Just asking.... Tom
  4. Hi all, Got on the water before sunrise to see if we could find any browns near shore. I picked up one 6.3 pound brown off an inline planer, and that was about it. I read the reports before going out, and noticed it seemed very random. I knew I was going to work my way out once the sun came up, but I did not expect to be all alone out there. The boats flew out in every direction of the compass and out to near the shipping lanes. I fished out to about 110', and found marks in the top 20', and on the bottom. I set sticks and spoons from the surface all the way down, but nothing doing. Water was about 44 degrees at the surface everywhere, and nearly 40' of visibility to the bottom. I did manage to find one pocket of 48 degree water with some color north of Bear Creek, and there was not a single mark in it. Not sure what to do this weekend. Maybe I will turkey hunt instead. Tom
  5. What was the water temp out past 100'? We were marking 44 degrees from shore to 80' near Pultneyville. Tom
  6. Nice report. Glad to hear somebody finding fish early. Where did you launch? I have an 18.5' Lund, and I am worried about getting it in the water at Hughes. Were you fishing east or west from Pultneyville? Thanks, and tight lines, Tom
  7. Hi, You can now buy it factory fresh from Ande. Pricing seems average without considering sales at other online shops. Might save some money, but the selection is spotty from what I have seen online. http://www.andemonofilament.com/buyonline.php I was considering switching to the Ande either the pink, clear or the new Ghost. How do you like using this line? What pound test are you using for various applications like flat lining and down rigging? Any recommendations would be helpful. Tom
  8. Thanks for all the reports. I know I find them useful. I check them every time before I head out. Hoping to get out a few more times before hunting season takes up all my free time. Tom
  9. Nice report. We missed all the good stuff by going out in the PM. Maybe next time...
  10. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: Tom ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 9/2/12 Time on Water: 1:30 - 7:30 pm Weather/Temp: Sunny 70s Wind Speed/Direction: ENE 10-15 Waves: 2' w/ lots of bigger rollers Surface Temp: 76 Location: West and East of Hughes LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 3 Total Boated: 1 Species Breakdown: King Hot Lure: Gr/Bl/Chrome SD/ Bl/Gr Fly Trolling Speed: 3 Down Speed: 2.5 Boat Depth: 110 Lure Depth: 75 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== We had Sunday stuff to do this morning. Wish I was out there. By the time we headed out, things were getting snotty. We set first rigger, then the second, and before I could get another rod out we had out first fish. A 22 pound king. It was the first for my neighbor with my dad and son on the boat as well. We fished the next 5 hours with a couple of light taps, a rigger that popped and dropped, and a dipsy that lasted all of 10 seconds. That was about it. Wind picked up throughout the afternoon. It got real funny out there. I ran into some ice cold water sporadically, and currents that made my lure drop to 1 MPH. Boat control was rough to the east, and OK to the west. We had the screen go blank in all that messy water, and your could smell it trying to turn over. We worked out to 175, blank screen. We came back into 80-110 and things improved. I am not sure what to do now. I think my timing was off today, but the fish seem scattered. I hope to get out a few more times, but I think we may be starting in closer to shore on the mornings until the rainbows come in tight. Tight lines, and Happy Labor Day to everyone getting out tomorrow. Taking the day off for family activities before my folks head back to PA.

Installed one this week, and now I can see again! It's awesome compared to my dead Lowrance transducer. We marked a lot of fish from top to bottom until we got out past 140', then it got quiet for a while. Started moving back in and picked up a 25 pound king in 80' on a dipsy 300' back. We marked a lot of fish, and tried from top to bottom with spoons an SD/fly combos. They just did not seem to be cooperating. I even tried bouncing bottom for lakers for a while. Had one small one pick up a dipsy, but dropped him. I was glad we waited till the afternoon. It was very fishable. We are heading back out tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully things will pick up. Tight lines everybody, and enjoy the holiday weekend.
  12. Thanks for all the updates guys. My dad is here from PA. Trying to get him out today and tomorrow. Hopefully it will lay down enough for the afternoon. We will be heading out of Hughes, if there is enough water to get the boat off the trailer. Good luck to everyone out there today. Tom
  13. Wow! That would be 1 in a lifetime for me and many folks. Congratulations! Tom
  14. Picture of my daughter with her fish. Video was too big to post. Tom
  15. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 8/11/12 Time on Water: 6-Noon Weather/Temp: Mostly Sunny, 70s Wind Speed/Direction: SW light, building around 11 Waves: 1 Surface Temp: 76 Location: North of Hughes LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 1 Total Boated: 1 Species Breakdown: Daughter's First King Hot Lure: Green SD/Fly Trolling Speed: 3 - 4 Down Speed: 2 -3 Boat Depth: 120 - 550 Lure Depth: 75 - 120 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Took my son and 13 year old daughter out this morning. It was really nice compared to what the weather was calling for this morning. Sunny, with lots of clear blue water. There was not much going on, and my Lowrance is not working very well past 50' for marking anything (bad transducer?). We picked up one 13 pound king on a dipsy out 250' in 450' of water. That was it, but it was enough to light up my daughter. We threw everything at them, but nothing else hooked up. I heard guys did pretty well in close with the browns. Tight lines... Tom
  16. We launched from Hughes at 6. Headed straight out to 120. Blank screen. Picked up one 13 pound king in 450' on our way out to 550'. That was our only bite, and only fish. Packed it in around noon when things were supposed to get rough. Tough day all around our area, but Oswego guys did pretty well. That was some weird clear blue water we had today!
  17. We had a very similar story just west of Sodus last night. Nothing really worked that was working previously. I probably won't get another chance to get out until 2nd or 3rd week of August now. Tom
  18. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: Lund 1800 Sport Angler ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 7/22/12 Time on Water: 3:15 - 8:15 Weather/Temp: Cloudy/80s Wind Speed/Direction:SW to W, light wind Waves: near calm to 1' Surface Temp: 77 Location: Circle from Hughes East to West LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 2 Total Boated: 2 Species Breakdown: Lakers Hot Lure: Wht/Gr SD with Green Fly Trolling Speed: 2 - 4.5 Down Speed: 1.8 - 3.4 Boat Depth: 40 - 300 Lure Depth: 20 - 120 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== I had a friend and his young son on the boat. It was their first time fishing trout/salmon on Lake Ontario. We made a big circle from Hughes to near Sodus and back to near Ginna. I started in 40' and found cold water 20' down. We fished 2 riggers with spoons, 2 dipsys with SD/Fly combos, and even flat lined a rod behind the boat with some bright spoons. I also ran sliders all night hoping we might find some something higher in the water column. The graph was blank all night. I found one bait pod, and nothing doing. I changed colors, depths and speed all afternoon with no luck. About 7PM it was really flat, and we saw some big fish jumping. That was when I let the flat line out just to see if anything was up near the surface. Still nothing. I wanted to get something on the boat, and I found a spot near Bear Creek where I have caught lakers on a few trips now. I sent the dipsys way down, and started coming back in to the 80' mark. We caught the first one about 7:45 in 100', and the second one as soon as we were done netting that first one. They were both on the smaller side. I weighed one at 4 pound 12 ounces. My friend and his son were thrilled to see the fish on board, so the trip was a success. It was really a very pleasant night to be on the water. Like last time out with newbies, my new guys did great on the boat this time too. They pitched in driving, and learned how to clear rods before we had a release. We caught both fish we hooked, so I consider that a sign of guys learning quickly. Around 8:15 we saw lots of lightning strikes on shore, so we packed up, and headed in at WOT. Storms did not come in for a few hours, but I did not want to take any chances. Tight Lines ! Tom
  19. Very nice. Sounds like a workout by yourself. Did you run east from Bear Creek or west? have not done to much fishing down there before. Tom
  20. Nice to see some folks having a good time. That's what it's all about. Of course catching kings in your home waters helps a lot! Cheers! Tom
  21. Thanks folks! I spent the last 8 years flat lining spring browns and steelhead from a smaller 16' boat. I occasionally had the opportunity to fish with friends in open water during the summer and fall on their rigs. Extending my season and capabilities is something I have wanted for a while. I think I picked a good year to move up. I decided to get my son out for another round tonight. I hope we can pick up a few more like last night. Tight lines, and be safe everyone! Tom
  22. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name:Lund Sport Angler ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 7/13/12 Time on Water: 3-8:30 PM Weather/Temp: HOT - 90ish with scattered gray patches Wind Speed/Direction: Seemed around 10, mostly NE Waves: 1-3 Surface Temp: 78 Location: Hughes East to near Sodus LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 8 Total Boated: 5 Species Breakdown: Kings and Steelhead? Hot Lure: Stinger NBK only Trolling Speed: 2 -3.4 Down Speed: 2.2 - 2.7 Subtroll Boat Depth: 90 - 140 Lure Depth: 50 - 80 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== My first time out salmon fishing as skipper on a new boat with 2 friends who never fished trout and salmon (thanks Jim and Carl). I had never done this on my own before, but that was why I got the boat. It was easy to find the water temp breaks and stay in a range of temps, 45 -55. We ran 2 riggers and 2 dipseys all night. All but 1 of the bites came on the riggers from 50 - 80', and all on NBK Stingers. We tried other spoons, and SD/fly combos with only one release on a green dot and hammer fly dipsey out 175'. I ran the dipseys on 2, with 150 - 250' of wire out. Sonar was blank, although I did find 1 bait mass around 50' down in 110'. We caught what I think are 3 kings and 3 steelhead, although I still need help and experience identifying the smaller fish that don't have obvious markings (maybe readers can help me out.) The first one came in 90' with one rigger out for 10 minutes. I was optimistic for a good evening, and we had pretty steady action until about 8PM. I think 1 king went over 20. I did not weigh it, but I am guessing low to mid 20s (we struggled to get it on board and hold it up). We lost one other bigger fish at the boat that chased and hit the rigger multiple times before and after it released. We released everything for another battle on another day, and I was exhausted running the fire drill in the back of the boat. Honestly, I would have been pleased to boat one fish for a first time out doing everything myself. I was tickled pink that my friends were able to boat their first big O salmon. They did a great job staying calm while I gave them directions on what to do. They were a loss for words, and carried on about the best fishing experience of their lives. I would agree, and am so thankful that we have this wonderful fishery in our backyard. Tom
  23. Thank you for the great report. I am heading out of Hughes for the evening tonight. It's first time out for salmon on the new boat. I am taking to salmon virgins out with me, so I really hope I can get on a few fish. Wish me luck. I will post the report to let you know how we did. Tom
  24. Wow! I wish I was that young man! The smile on his face tells the whole story. I would kill for a day like that on the lake. Way to go, and way to get the next generation hooked. If that trip does not keep a young fisherman coming back, nothing will! Tom
  25. I have had a few offers on the boat. If you are interested, make me an offer. The new to me boat is in the driveway, so I would like to move this one sooner than later. Thanks for looking. Tom
