Its really weather related. Last year with the exceptionally warm spring we were fishing in mid March. I fish the Wilson to Point Breeze waters. Look for fishing to start up once the lake gets into the 40's. Look for colored water, clear water in shallow makes for tough conditions and for me usually means sliding out for lakers.

Just started fishing spring browns a couple years ago in the 16 ft tinner. Just about any stick bait will work. Natural patterns work in most conditions except if your in really dirty water brights have their days. A spoon or two in the mix is a good idea. I have a couple clamp on downriggers and spoons did not catch as many fish as sticks but did take some of the bigger fish.

Looking to replace some trebles with siwash hooks on spoons like standard stingers, DW SS, NK 28. What size siwash should I be looking at 1/0? I'm not really sure to be honest with you. Thanks.

Anybody know if the river is fishable after yesterdays wind on Lake Erie. I had been planning to fish it tomorrow but not sure about maikng the drive now. I heard visability was about two feet on the river this morning. Would that be fishable or a crapshoot?

Has anyone ever used this launch. Thinking about fishing the lower niagara this weekend and know there's only a few launch sites along the river.

So I decided to try for summer browns this past wednesday for the first time just to switch it up a little bit from walleye fishing. Walleye gear seems to match up pretty good for browns. Managed to land six nice browns and one skippy king. I focused primarily on 60-80 fow because that seemed to be where most of the bait was. Looking for some pointers. Was I fishing to deep? Don't have speed/temp sensor so just looked for bait on the bottom. How about speed? I tried to keep it at 2.2-2.5 on the GPS. Any spoon colors / sizes work better? I caught most of the fish on an NK28 Frog pattern. I don't have many spoons, a couple stingers, a couple NK 28, a few DW SS's, and some Contenders. Silver, gold, and copper backs. A dipsy run off braid outproduced the riggers. How long of a lead off the ball? I ran 45 and 65 back. I will most likely be out of either Olcott or Oak when I head up that way. Thanks for the info.

Picked up 4 more browns all in around 70 fow. Lots of bait on the bottom and thats where the fish seemed to be. This was my first time out there in the summer, a little behind the learning curve since we have only fished the lake in the spring for browns. Best setup was a 107 walker deeper diver on braid out 175 on a 2.5 setting.

Hey guys, Thinking about trying the inshore waters this week if we get a really nice day. I spend most of my time in Lake Erie in my 16 ft tiller chasing walleyes and looking to try something different. I thought targeting browns might be an option. I have two riggers and a couple dipsy rods. From everything I read finding where the thermocline intersects the bottom is a good starting point. I dont have a speed and temp unit buy my Lowrance will sometimes pick up the thermocline, probably looking for bait on the bottom is a good idea to. I'm guessing 60-100 fow? Any advice / pointers would be great. I have some NK 28's, Stingers, Contenders, and DW SS's.

We have fished from Buffalo to Sturgeon/Abino on the fence. There's fish all over this year, on rough days when we can't make a run there are plenty of eyes in the nearshore zone, mostly eaters in the 16-20 inch range with a few bigger fish mixed in. Most fish have been caught on heavy bb's, leadcore and jets with a few on dipsys as well.

What an awesome summer it has been. Since July 1st and about 20 trips we have limited out everyday except once where we only did 6 fish. Walleye fishing has just been outstanding. Gotta love Lake Erie. Thinking about heading up to Lake O this week since my freezer, my relatives freezers, and my neighbors are pretty much full to capacity.

Troll along deep ledges and structure with magnum spoons and enough lead to get you near bottom

Yeah, definately not as much fun as not being able to keep two lines in the water but it was nice out. Just thankful to be on the water.

After doing quite well on lakers and a few nice kings farther east last week, I decided to head west to Wilson with all the good reports coming in. Granted I am very green with this type of fishing. I fished from 60 fow out to 175 with a mostly blank screen. Needless to say it was a very humbling experience a two good trips last week farther east. Nonetheless the lake was glassy and I was very comfortable out there in my 16 footer. Trolled spoons on downriggers down 40 - 70 feet, tried a 5 color with a spoon, then also a stickbait on the surface when I pulled the core out. Nada, zip, zero. Couldn't even find a school of lakers to play with. Speed was from 2-3 mph, no sensor for me for down speed and I am in no position to go out and get one so if anybody see's a used one on the cheap please send word my way.

I am in no position to go out and spend $500 on a speed and temp unit. Understanding that the currents can be quite strong can anybody provide some guestimates on trolling speed for different species. For the most part we have been catching lakers with a few salmon. I did notice one day while trolling west we were idling at around 2 mph and when we turned around to come back west we were doing about 3 mph on a glassy lake with no waves. I appreciate any input and know I'll probably hear to go and and buy a unit but it's not financially possible right now. Thanks

Yes the first mate does take good pictures, he's not camera shy. Gps track wasn't to bad, expect for the figure 8 I did with the big King, lol. Prob wouldn't get away with it with a walleye spread out but the short leads on the downriggers are very foregiving.

I've got a bunch of jet divers I use for walleye fishing. Anybody fish them off boards with spoons on Lake Ontario?

I had non-stop action the whole evening, mostly lakers, one steelhead, and my first ever Lake Ontario Kings the biggest going 19 pounds . Ran two stingers, one DWB and one Frog both took the fair share. What an incredible evening, well worth the hour drive to squeez a few hours of fishing in. Bunch of lakers in the 8-12 lb. range. the two other kings in the low teens. First mate Fat toad, almost thirteen pounds They just kept coming 19 lb. king, a reel hoot on the 7 ft. med. Ugly Sitck with 12 lb. test

What speed do you troll at for lakers this time of year? Thought about sliding out a bit after the brown bite along shore. Can I simply troll some spoons off riggers or dipsies?

I use inlines all the time, Church Walleye Boards. We use them for eyes on Erie and spring fishing on Ontario because I also have a small 16 foot aluminum. We like to remove the board then fight the fish. They are quite easy to remove by yourself, just try to keep the line as tight as possible. We have good success with them and they run well in a good chop as well.
