  1. should never even try the smithwick brand
  2. anybody ever have any problems with redfeild accutrac 6-18 loosing its gas?? i heard of this happening before and i purchased one before i heard this. i personally thought it would make a great piece atop my new 111f 300 winmag. i love it already but heard i should watch out for gas escaping causing fogging inside the scope in cold weather. anyone got experience with this model? one person i know bought one brand new way back whene and said its flawless and mine will be as well indefinatly.
  3. if you gotta drive a long ways i dont know what to tell ya but if ya know the water will be flat, fish the south east corner in early may for browns, steelhead and pike. launch at little salmon river and put out lures as soon as you exit river mouth. dont even warm the motor up, just troll it up. youll be hooked up before you even get the third lure out if the water is under 49 degrees. if the water is still under 44 degrees turn west. if its starting to warm above 44 or at 44 turn twards the east corner and troll untill you cross grindstone current break and turn around and repeat. may not be worth the drive if you cant garantee flat water as the east end gets pounded with wind and huge waves in spring. if you make it out and the lake is stormin, at least youll get some awsome veiws of monster waves from rainbow shores. even thats worth the drive.
  4. now if only they would wage war on cormorants.
  5. sharpen the hooks too as they can not be replaced without a hassle.
  6. ive caught more walleye in oneida lake on mirrolure sinkers than crawler harnesses. troll them over deeper weed beds before they reach the surface in late may and early june. in lake ontario they work extremely well on flatlines becasue in the shallow water whene your ussually pulling boards with rapalas, smithwicks and thundersticks the mirrolure should go out on a flatline and let it out until it hits the bottom and then fish it neer the bottom. not digging bottom but a tick ever minute or two to make sure its fishing neer bottom. they sink and they work great on the bottom of a double rig, in oneida lake and lake ontario. i know they should work on the fingers too because i have caught lakers on double rigs in skaneateles lake. i have also caught walleye in 50 fow on mirrolures behind small big jon diver discs 200 backin august whene nobody can cull walleye in the heat of hot days. they produce bonus fish galore like pike, huge perch catfish and sheepshead. they really do produce. make sure you check the action they make at the side of the boat because they are not always compadible with other lures speed ranges.
  7. bill words cannot describe my excitement. as you all know im a fan of the natural things new york has/had to offer, this was a treat
  8. wife stayed home today and releived me of my duties as daddy day care and i grabbed my mini-14 for some predator calling. set up in corner of secluded scrub field way off beeten path, started calling with grey squirrel distress calls. after first 2 minute session i saw what appeared to be a hawk prowling the sky, i was quiet and motionless, watching to see if the hawk heard the call or what, it did. the bird was enourmous and i knew it wasnt a hawk as it started to scope my setup. the bird deemed the coast cleer and landed 30 yds from my feet staring exactly into my eyes. ther was no question it was a bald eagle. it was the about the same size as a full grown turkey and it did not move. it was waiting to see some movement from the distressed squirrel. we stared each other down without movement for a solid 4-5 mins then the eagle felt neccesary to vacate. this happend at about 12:30 in town of lakeport on south shore of oneida lake. no predators responded but the eagle was much more exciting and i never thought that would happen. i seriusly hope somebody believes me becasue i couldnt get my camera phone out without being made by the smart and keen eagle. they are truly huge and wingspan was about that of a great blue heron. wow my hair is standing up again thinking about it. they come to predator calls...wow
  9. oneida lake is also jammed full of slime darts. they tatse so good but most people on oneida practice club and release on em cause of the bones.
  10. i fish for huge fish all the time. size always matters. im all about catch and release. id let it go if it was a world record. i once let a 20 plus pound sheephead go. there should be a catch and release only fishery for them considering synthetic mounts can replicate their features just fine. my first 50 inch musky went right back after one picture and a 2 hand horizontal hold. im to young to share opinions with the old coots on this site though. my 2 coins
  11. those old rebels are awsome lures its agood thing my father had abox full from a garage sale that was about 30 deep. those lures have caught many fish including my first musky on a jointed yellow with orange diamonds. no i will not part with them. another secret lure that still works that nobody else can get is the L&S Mirrolure. the sinkers work the best for me. can still find a few on e-bay but not the good colors.
  12. have a 9.9 johnson to add to my bag of tricks this year just need to mount it. if anybody has a used kicker bracket there not useing, ill buy it.
  13. lookin for a die set, once fired brass, and neck sizer for 300 winchester magnum and .243 win. interested in some nice used glass, well suited to caliber also. pm if you got any of these things. Edit: ammo not allowed on post.
  14. no im saying that the recent return of a small run of atlantics is due to the comeback of smelt and the presence of spiny water fleas. they negate the vitamin deficiancy that restricts survival rate of eggs. maybe thers more living in the lake that cannot be caught conventionaly but still have somewhat of a deficiency. there may be another way to catch them. and we may not see them running rivers if there eggs never ripen. is there an accurate count? oneida lake has also had some stocking of some small numbers in several tribs as well. they do not stay in that lake because of temperature. catch rate may not be accurate and the river count may not be accurate either. thats what im saying and im also saying it for food for thought.
  15. one good reason nobody catches good numbers of atlantics is because nobody targets them. sure traditional salmon strategys have taken their share of atlantics, and the fingerlakes have comparable strategys. although highly adaptable, atlantic salmon have more complex diets. so why dont we catch more out on the big o if they are stocked?? maybe becasue they consume the spiny water flea more readily than other salmonids. this is 100 percent true in the ocean. why not on the big o?? i have been reading up on this stuff to target them. natural reproduction was almost non existent in past years due to malnutrition causing unsatisfactory egg production. explosions of smelt and spiny water flea have helped to acctually reinstate natural reproduction of the atlantic strains by adding correct balance of vitamins, supporting egg production. maybe they have a chance and maybe there needs to be some hours spent on new studies of migration movements and feeding habits then we can assume that the lake can take off on its own again. then target them easily. i have caught a descent trout while fishing for kings in fall, that puked up some fleas. i thought i dragged him through a cloud but after reaserching fleas, maybe atlantics favor them over the alweife forage base. could this be?
  16. model 512 marlin slugmaster is another fine bolt slug gun. cant beat a savage though. i bet ur savage will make a lifetime of happy hunting and shooting. i got a few savages and rems and marlins and even a tikka. love my savages best.
  17. damn...there goes the 300 win mag dies i wanted.
  18. south of stony is nicccceeee. blue herringbone thundersticks is my not so secret weapon op there but it still takes the most browns every year for me, and many other people up this way.
  19. yeahhhhh gotta love those beach browns stuffed full on gobys lookin like they swallowed a grapefruit.
  20. ha ha nice... good luck to ya ray. nice brown for finger trib to ray.
  21. nobody is gonna part with these before you pry them outa our cold dead fish mouths
  22. im tryin that maxima stuff for lake fishing. sounds great. ive used it for leaders in the river and its good for that.
  23. no downriggers or dipsies or wire. just 8.5 foot cherrywoods or blue diamonds 3 rods per board (side). sticks and spoons. 2 flatlines with deep divrs or short coppers with spoons. rock those browns world with this setup. everyone i know runs this setup and it accounts for kings, cohos, steel and browns in the month of april whene the water is colder than 49 degrees in 3-12 feet of water, in mexico bay. i use the same mono and rods that i use for fall kings, but i use 8 foot leaders of 17 lb test berkely vanish. 25-30 cookie cutters per hour plus bonus slobs and steel occasionally. love those lake ontario dirt trout. if i could do this all year i would only fish like this. to hell with musky and kings. cant catch 50 fish before lunch in the fall or whene musky fishing.
  24. i dont even know the name of the knot i tie but i think id call it a double polomer knot?? use it for everything
