  1. First morning out on the river this year that I got blanked on the walleyes. Did manage a few largemouth in Lake of the Isles.
  2. They definitely like it where deep water moves up over and around shoals and the head and side of islands where the current is running. It makes for an interesting troll into the current and often you are barely making headway but current keeps cranks working. Almost like hotshotting for steelhead. They move up into shallower water at night (8-20 fow) and may drop deep (30 to over 80) which makes trolling very difficult so jigs and jigging spoons work better or you can try downriggers or very heavy weights. The tough part is you generally have small target areas and need to know the river to fish at night.
  3. Fished the river again this morning but had one of those days. Caught 1 walleye and 3 smallmouths but had 3 others come unglued which I'm fairly sure were walleyes. One felt like a very big fish. Once in a while you have a day like that for no apparent reason.
  4. Mike, Thanks for the information. I've been hitting the St Lawrence for walleye the last two mornings as wind has been up at the lake. I'll be out again next week when there's a calmer day. Good luck.
  5. I was up early this morning to beat the heat. After hitting the inland lakes for bass and Ontario for salmon and browns last week. I was back on the river this morning and rewarded with a nice limit of walleyes. I was done fishing by 7:00.
  6. On a green and silver spoon can't remember which but either Stinger, R+R or NK.
  7. Thanks for the report. Looking forward to getting out again but since I'm fishing from a Lund Alaskan I have to pick my days. Nice to see some Kings showing up and a consistent brown bite. Where is the Haystack? I saw a couple boats working off the Pill Boxes.

One came unbuttoned just behind the boat and another wrapped the rigger cable just as I was netting.Should have had them both. Did manage a nice catch of browns with largest over 10#. Equal number taken on dipsies 180-240"and downriggers with sliders 95-120'.
  9. The bass have really turned on in the lakes. I've had great luck my last three outings catching many fish over 15 inches. Yesterday we fished about 4 hours and landed about 30 largemouths on a variety of techniques and about 7 were 15-18" fish. Top water, crankes and wacky worms all did the trick. Shallow early then deep water weed edges as sun got higher.
  10. I'm long lining 10lb braid with deep diving cranks for walleyes and don't really have a solution to that set up.
  11. The last two times I fished the St Lawrence I had a lot of problems with water fleas on my line. Did hit a 24" eye and 8 bass this morning but the fleas were the worst I've ever seen them. Never saw them here until about 3-4 years ago Wish the Boarder Patrol had kept them out of the US!
  12. I like the early morning 4:00-8:00 as there is no boat traffic but the evening should be good also. You can also catch some latter in the morning but they move deeper.
  13. Caught a 19" walleye and limit of smallmouths (14-18") this morning on the river.
  14. Lisbon is good in May but I catch plenty near Alex Bay this time of the year but there is quite a learning curve involved. Lots of techniques will work some of the time but consistency is a tougher thing. We ate some of those eyes this week and they were delicious but I like pan fish too.
  15. Many launches available on the river. Clayton, Cape Vincent and Alex Bay all have launches as do most of the State parks
  16. 18" size limit so three small ones had to go back. 19" was last one I caught and seemed to be in better shape than those in the live-well..
  17. I got up very early this morning and hit the St Lawrence River by myself. Ended up catching seven walleyes. three around 17" and one 19" were released. The photo shows me with two 28" and on 20" and a 18" and 16" smallmouth. I was back at the launch by 8:00
  18. Quick trip out this morning caught 1 walleye and one decent smallmouth near Alexandria Bay. I took three eyes early one morning last week. Fish are shallow at night and drop deeper after the sun comes up. Trolling deep diving cranks and stick baits off heavy bottom bouncers in fast current.
  19. I generally let all the bigger ones go but I had company that weekend that wanted some fish. I only had a couple hours to fish and keep what I caught for their meal. I completely agree with your advice however.
  20. I caught some trolling crank baits the other morning very early while walleye fishing. Also caught three eyes. Fish were in the current up on shoals 8-30'.
  21. I actually feed them fried pike, walleye, perch, and black sea bass the night before but they liked the grilled brown best.
