After harvesting a nice muzzleloader doe, I decided to visit my daughter's family rather than hunt the second season waterfowl opener and the regular deer opener. Couldn't have imagined doing that before I had a grandson to visit but priorities do change and being retired I have lots of days to hunt. I'll be back hunting next week but am blessed to have family to enjoy this weekend!

Pap, I've got her boned out and aging in the garage refrigerator. Will finish cutting and vacuum seal after aging. She was large, fat with very little lost meat. We will greatly enjoy the meat! Now I can relax and visit my daughter and grandson this weekend. The pressure is off and I can now look for a buck and waterfowl hunt. I do have another bow/muzzleloader tag and a couple DMP tags but likely won't use them. Perhaps if we get a nice day I can get my wife to sit a watch or two. She also has a muzzleloader tag and DMP tag.

I harvested a very large doe with my muzzleloader tonight. Her heart was literally cut in half and she ran over 100 yards. The TC shockwave broke a rib on each side destroyed the heart and had a large exit hole at around 70 yards.

We often run 900 series Reef Runner in our mix for late fall at Quinte

I had a small fawn at 25 yards but didn't feel like taking it. Their were a couple doe in the area but no shots were available. Latter, after making a move, I jumped a decent buck in a goldenrod field. It was probably shootable (around 150 yards) with my Pro hunter but I tried to range it and wasn't able to pull off a shot. I'll be back out this evening.

Trying to get one for my sister-in-law who has never shot one. She missed one opening morning and failed to shoot at one tonight that came in to 25 yards. Guess it's time for my brother or me to whack one.

Looks like we are in for a cold and rainy opening weekend. Wonder how it will effect the deer movement.

Great fish and I'm glad you took the release criticism so well ( many wouldn't have) I honestly believe they were simple trying to educate everyone. I've never fished for muskies, although I have caught a few small ones incidentally. Every year I say I'm going to put in some time and target them but once hunting season starts.............. Perhaps I should troll a few hours after chasing ducks. Good luck to all of you Muskie hunters. It's a beautiful time to be on the SLR!

I've been watching a flock of about 25 turkeys since the opener and have tried to make a move on them a couple times but all those eyes and ears make it tough. This morning I tried again and nearly got in range when they walked away from me. I made a move on them and was able to sneak along a brushy hedgerow within range to harvest a young Tom. I've seen many flocks this fall and I believe they had a good hatch this summer which is great since their numbers seemed down this spring.

Well the best laid plans didn't pan out this morning. Rather than the hundreds of ducks we saw on Wednesday, we only saw a fraction of them today. To make things worse they had a different flight pattern. We only ended up with 2 woodies, one that the dog found that was not shot by us. We will try again this evening on the roost we hunted on Sunday. We are hoping the rain and clouds will bring them in a bit earlier.

Hunted yesterday and this morning. Yesterday we limited on woodies (6) but saw hundreds of birds. We are returning there tomorrow morning with a better set up plan and high expectations. Today we got 4 mallards and 3 teal on another private marsh. Had to make a quick move to adjust to where they wanted in. If we had been there earlier we would have limited out. I'm very fortunate to be hunting with Gabe Ward who has a great dog and has done a great deal of work scouting out new areas. Being retired is certainly great for having time to do what I love but there old legs aren't what they use to be. Walking in marshes beats me up but I'm fortunate to still be at it.

We got 4 mallards and a woodie yesterday morning and a woodie and a mallard last night. Last night after we unloaded or guns, the ducks swarmed the roost. Hundreds of woodies and mallards arrived minutes after legal shooting time, many landing only a few feet away. It was a bit frustrating but a great show, We plan on returning on an overcast or rainy evening and hope they arrive a few minutes earlier. This morning we pulled and paddled the canoes into a huge marsh. It was a lot of work for this old arthritic guy and we only got 4 woodies and a mallard for our effort. All considered it was a slow opening weekend for us but I feel fortunate any morning I get to see a marsh come to life!

I've used them and Mojo. At times they are magistrate, other times they may hurt. Can always remove them if birds are responding.

ProfT and I have done well all summer fishing steep drop offs with lots of current in 30-55 fow. We both use heavy bottom bouncers. Others use jigs and jigging spoons and a few use down riggers. You really need to know the water you're trolling and have great boat control to fish effectively a you can early looks a lot of gear. If you are running reef runners and husky jerks they likely are not near enough to bottom. I catch some in 20-25 fow at night longlining deep divers but many more are caught deeper using bottom bouncers. It's different fishing than running long lines off boards in May and late fall where you're targeting fish 5-25 feet down, perhaps suspended over deeper water. We also generally only fish early morning and evenings and seldom fish more that 2-3 hours. (Usually less) I'm also not sure how the current runs where you fish but it is running hard where we are catching them. Also weeds don't seem to be a key as fish are generally on rocky areas with little or no weeds. We often mark bait balls but less often mark the fish. I believe they are often hugging bottom.

Roybee, I'll be winding down my SLR walleye efforts but still hit them occasionally. Bow hunting, ducks in Canada and NY, and turkey are next up and more geese when they reopen. I will also likely fish for trophy walleyes at Quinte and Ogdensburg later this fall. What a great time we've had fishing the SLR this summer. Probably the best year I've ever experienced.
