  1. Sat on my dock sat and watched the white caps and gust and thought it might not be a good day for the yak. Watched a guy, hop in a john boat, not wearing a pfd, row out against the wind. Rowed and rowed in what seemed a futile attempt. wind was blowing him further down then out. Finally, reaches his spot, I bet he was plum tired plus he wasn't the fittest guy, and drops an anchor. Now I'm really concerned. whitecaps are slashing over the front of the boat. I don't have my pickup truck which has a cell phone and a portable marine radio. I'm sure he is going to be swimming soon. He stays in that spot trying to fish and I continue to watch. My neighbors come down and I decide to pass on watch duty to them. Now I have paddled my kayak in some snotty weather before when the wind came out of nowhere ( 5 footers on Buzzards Bay) but I am prepared for any situation which may occur. My kayak is a sit on top. It is self bailing and I practice re-entery. I can get back onto it if need be. I always wear a pfd and would never be in a yak without it on. I also have a portable waterproof marine radio which is attached to my vest,in the event the yak flips and there is separation between me and the yak, as well as a safety whistle and knife. When I yak at night, which I do at the Cape, my yak has a lighted mast and I carry glow sticks and I would never go out at night alone. It is also equipped with a fish finder and gps. My point is, is it worth your life to take risks and if you do, are you really prepared? This guy wasn't prepared.
  2. Just watched the long liner video, Might be complicated to trip once you get near the boat. This is the area most fish are lost. Id rather have the rod in one hand and the net in the other. 3 way with the weight and cowbell or long leader will accomplish the same thing. The other thing both Flyboy and I use is a reel with a line counter. This will make the learning curve much less. I also bought a mini planner board but didn't get a chance to try it out yet.
  3. What Jude said except some of the water on Seneca( which I also fish) is too deep to drag the cowbell on the bottom. There is also a finger lake version of cowbell which is much smaller than the ones I use on Ontario. I also have a rod holder in front of my yak which I use a deep diving rapalla. Sometimes I catch browns or land locks on that. I also fish with the leadcore and dipsy as well as flasher and flies. Once you get the methodology down, you will be fine. You can also jig for fish once you locate them. Good luck and welcome to the club.
  4. Ifishy, Kayak can hold a lot of person depending on what model. and he has caught 20lb. + kings.
  5. The kayak is actually a very stable platform. Jude and I catch a wide variety of species both fresh and salt. He's got me beat on the Big O though. Joe would be smiling on that one Jude.
  6. Agree with Jack. Thanks Marty. Fred
  7. Weeds and fleas for me on Sat. Marked alot of fish but weeds and fleas.
  8. Severne. Haven't been there either. Staying at Backackers?
  9. Lauching kayak from Starkey Point 4:30-5 a.m.
  10. Weeds sucked yesterday. I think lakeside people are cutting them. Huge pods of weeds yesterday while in my yak. Niice report.
  11. Neighbor took a ride up to Dresden and fished. Said there were tons of panfish and bullhead. Maybe a roadtrip up from Watkins?
  12. I heard on the radio today that the state is trying to figure out what tribs are contributing to the high phosphorous level along the shoreline of Lake Ontario which is causing algae blooms close to shore. Water clarity is definitely different on Seneca from 2 weeks ago. Temp was 69 degrees. Nice for swimming but.................
  13. There were areas where my fish finder was giving me a reading of 1/2' in some areas when I know I was in 125' of water. Wonder if it was the algae?
  14. Fished my yak Sat early a.m. for a couple of hours out of Starlkey Point. Weeds were bad and got nada. Marked lots of fish South of Starkey. Lots of dead bullheads floating and weeds. Are these bullheads post spawn. Couple of live ones mear the dock and they looked narly, sort of like post spawn kings.
  15. Rigged my kayak for an early morning lauch the night before. Sat at 5 am, put on breaTHables, and drytop and head out on Seneca. Slight drizzzle but water was flat. Paddle north to my usual spots and drop my leadcore with a deep diving minnow, Nada. not marking any fish. Paddle some more and add a second rod with a dipsy flasher and fly. Rain picking up a little. Decide to paddle South of Starkey Point and start marking fish in 125-150 with fish down @ 10 feet. Still nothing. Rain starts to pick up and I can see some Sheet coming in fro the South. Rollers Start coming with the rain so I decide to Switch tactics and pull in the Dipsy and leadcore and just go with a deep diver in the shallower water, @ 30 ft and see if maybe I could pick up a pike or something else. As soon as I head to shallower water, I start marking bait balss abd fish. Big fish. While paddling Back North, rod goes off and line too. I turn the yak with the rudder and let the fish tow me while realing in. I get the fish close to the Boat and still think it was maybe a very big pike until I see it. Big brown. Fish make a number of runs and under the baot but I just swing the rod and let the drag of pulling the yak do the work. After a few attemps to net the fish and some more runs, I net the big brown. If you have never caught big fish out of a kayak, you don't know what you are missing. Being that low to the water and he fish are magical. Thanks to you guys who suggested ussing the deep diver and for some color suggestions. Hope to get out this weekend. Fred My friend Jude(Flyboy) outdid me on Ontario. He caught a 20.5 king and a 10 coho out of his kayak using a dipsy, flasher and home made Bunny fly.
  16. Looking good for tomorrow morning. Radio will be on to channel 69. Once again, Thanks for the help guys.
  17. Lake Bound, Wasn't me but I probably have a similar setup. I've have lauched out of Watkins though. My friend Jude fishes Ontario alot. Caught an 18 lb. atlantic last year. I usually fish the salt more. But plan on doing more sweetwater this year. Getting towed by a big fish is a rush. My yak has a rudder which should help me with pulling to one side. And a gps and fishfinder to hopefully find catch some fish this weekend. Yoou guys are great with the info and help. Thanks, Fred
