  1. Looks like southern Lake Michigan had the most excitement from this storm. Multiply the the average on the graph by 1.5 for maximum wave height (NOAA calculation) 34 ft is that a good jigging chop?
  2. Just in case this sounds too good to be true here is the link from The New York Power Authority http://www.nypa.gov/Press/2011/110927b.html NY Power Authority Trustees Vote to End Proposed Great Lakes Offshore Wind Project September 27, 2011 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WHITE PLAINS—The New York Power Authority (NYPA) Board of Trustees on Tuesday voted to end the competitive solicitation process for the proposed Great Lakes Offshore Wind Project (GLOW), without awarding a contract for project development. The estimated annual cost of GLOW and the current economic conditions were the reasons for the Trustees’ action. Evaluation of the proposed project’s economics determined that it would not be fiscally prudent for the Power Authority to commit to the initiative.
  3. Watertown, hope this link works http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/arti ... /709179931 State Sen. George Maziarz, R-Newfane, chairman of the Senate Energy Committee, told the Buffalo News on Thursday that the New York Power Authority is backing away from the Lake Ontario and Lake Erie project in favor of a wind farm off Long Island with the Long Island Power Authority and Consolidated Edison. “I think at this time it is very expensive and I think at this time they are moving away from it and I think it’s a wise decision,†he said Friday. “I have every indication that it is not moving forward.†But Sen. Patricia A. Ritchie, R-Heuvelton, said Friday that NYPA officials told her last week that no decisions had been made.
  4. http://www.buffalonews.com/city/article558352.ece "An ambitious plan for what was to be the nation's first freshwater wind farm with as many as 150 large turbines in Lake Erie (or Lake Ontario) off Buffalo's shoreline is being halted, a state lawmaker with firsthand knowledge said Thursday." "The Great Lakes project is expected to be discussed when the authority board meets Sept. 27." I don't trust them but we'll see what happens.
  5. Long Island has some mega-mega bucks neighborhoods. A huge boating area. I don't think they will put up with this crap either. Hopefully the scam falls apart everywhere. Once they put them up in Long Island Sound the Great Lakes are next. And another story below concerning some previous posts in this section. It is very poorly written and difficult to understand but the title explains most of it. Legislators vote to oppose state Power of NY Act Opponents say legislation could override local interests in siting power plants http://www.palltimes.com/articles/2011/ ... 740587.txt Doyle votes against this bill: Also, the bill enacts a new permanent streamlined permitting process for power plants greater than 25 megawatts by creating a “one-stop†multiagency siting board that will make siting decisions. The legislation allows communities to participate in the process by requiring power plant applicants to provide “intervener funding†for the community to be affected by potential projects, to hire experts and lawyers to review proposal. Legislator Shawn Doyle, R-Pulaski, has noted that there are aspects of the bill that he described as positive. However, the “bad outweighs the good,†he said, as the issue lays in the threat to Home Rule, he has said, which is the legislative authority that allows each municipality in New York to govern themselves. “This takes away input from the local planning and zoning, and even community government, whether it is village, town or county, on any siting of power projects,†Doyle said. Malone votes in favor: and don’t tell me there isn’t tourism for windmills because there is.â€
  6. This is the information about the bacteria (Pseudomonas fluorescens) that kills Zebra and Quagga mussels. http://www.aquaticnuisance.org/wordpres ... Malloy.pdf It is not common and is difficult to produce (high cost). And an update on testing. http://marronebioinnovations.com/produc ... _testing/# Research for these problems is good. Hopefully someday...
  7. Misty, please read the previous 3 posts before yours. Yes it is an extremely troubling development. That is the method the wind scum use to run their scam. They get the state government to take the planning authority away from the local communities. And then they can have the state push their windmills through without the locals having any say in the matter. The good news is future wind development is becoming extremely questionable both on land and maybe even more so on water because of the high costs. There is great deal of difficulty finding investors that will take on the risk.
  8. The good news first. The Ceveland, Lake Erie project has been delayed a year because they can't find any investors and other various problems. This next part looks really bad. http://palltimes.com/articles/2011/08/0 ... 472162.txt However, according to the Coalition on Article X (COAX) — a nickname for the bill — the measures signing is an “imminent threat.†“COAX members are appalled that Article X was slipped into law without any discussion by our elected officials with the very New York state citizens they were elected to represent,†members of COAX said in a statement. “We find this lack of transparency to be totally unacceptable.†The organization noted that Power NY encroaches on Home Rule in New York, a legislative authority that allows each municipality in New York to govern themselves. “This takes away input from the local planning and zoning, and even community government, whether it is village, town or county on any siting of power projects,†said Oswego County Legislator Shawn Doyle, R-Pulaski, who hosts meetings locally with COAX. “If somebody wants to come in here, and whether they want to site a nuclear power plant, a gas plant, coal plant or build industrial wind farms … the local boards have no say. The state would do all the siting.†http://www.wind-watch.org/news/2011/08/ ... ipalities/ On August 4, 2011 Governor Andrew Cuomo stripped away the municipal “Home Rule†rights of the very public that elected him, by signing into law the “Power NY Act.†Also known as Article X, this swiftly passed law was prompted by separate bills initially sponsored by Senator George Maziarz (R – 62nd District) and Assemblyman Kevin Cahill (D – 101st District). The combined bill passed both houses with very little public input, late at night behind closed doors. The public’s rights were taken – literally – while they slept. COAX would like to say thank you to our elected officials who did the right thing and voted against Article X trying to preserve Municipal “Home Ruleâ€, unfortunately, too many voted yes. Coalition On Article X (COAX) was formed to preserve and regain our municipal “Home Rule†rights, taken away by New York’s Governor, Senators, and Assemblypersons who voted to strip the public of their ability to govern their own towns. COAX members are appalled that Article X/Power NY Act was signed into law without any discussion from our elected officials to the citizens they were elected to represent. We find these actions to be totally unacceptable. New York State has always prided itself on the fact that it is a “Home Rule†State.
  9. I think Obama is running Canada. This is just a thought but not too long ago there was supposed to be a thing set up called a North American security zone. Basically the US told CAN how things were going to be. Maybe CAN is now enforcing the laws that the US told them to? To protect the borders and follow the laws that they were told to follow. That is more than my little brain can figure out but it usually how the government(s) mess things up.
  10. Please sign the following petition http://www.wind-watch.org/ http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/wind-watch.html Suggestion for comment section The setback should be at least 3000 meters or 2 miles from anyone’s home. It is appalling that the governments of Canada and the US have completely disregarded the people’s health by building industrial wind turbines that are too close. There have been endless studies that clearly show the negative health consequences of building industrial wind turbines that are too close. These are world leading countries and governments. They have not shown any concern for their own citizen’s health.
  11. Our Great Lakes Commons: A People's Plan to Protect the Great Lakes Forever Our Great Lakes Commons is a call to understanding and a call to action on an exciting new proposal to designate the Great Lakes and its tributary waters as a lived Commons, to be shared, protected, carefully managed and enjoyed by all who live around them. The Great Lakes Basin Commons would need to be protected by a legal and political framework based on Public Trust Doctrine, underpinning in law that the Great Lakes are central to the very existence of those people, plants and animals living on or near them and therefore must be protected for the common good from generation to generation. http://canadians.org/water/documents/gr ... s-0311.pdf The first half of this paper is all doom and gloom. The important points are on pages 34-35. Does anyone have an opinion on this?
  12. Public pressure in Michigan has got this bill introduced to the House. Only YOU can force the same thing in New York. House Bill 4499 (2011) Michigan Natural resources; Great Lakes; off-shore wind development; prohibit. http://www.legislature.mi.gov/(S(jl2p4j ... 55cwz3pa55))/mileg.aspx?page=getObject&objectName=2011-HB-4499 (copy and paste the whole link to your browser) Thank you for keeping after this Captain Vince.
  13. I see these things in the news and the windmill situation is so insane it doesn't even seem real anymore. This is what the windfarm dirtbags have been up to recently http://www.herkimertelegram.com/news/x7 ... e-hit-home Fairfield property owners James and June Salamone were among those learning last week that a mechanic’s lien ($1.95million), shown, had been filed against their property in connection with a dispute between two companies involved with the Hardscrabble Wind Farm Project. Like the city of Little Falls and several other property owners erroneously included in the claim, the Salamones have neither a contract with the company nor a wind tower on their 11.4-acre parcel. The legal notice the couple received by certified mail last Wednesday detailed 33 additional individual or municipal property owners and companies — including the city of Little Falls and at least two other land owners who have no ties or connections to the wind power company — who have had claims filed against their properties.
  14. Recent news State Still Considering Great Lakes Offshore Wind Proposals http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/wned/ ... .Proposals BUFFALO (wned) - Western New Yorkers are still waiting to hear what the state's Great Lakes Offshore Wind (GLOW) power project will look like. An announcement was originally slated to come in January, then pushed back to the end of March. Now the date could run well into summer. The New York Power Authority (NYPA) began considering five proposals last summer for GLOW. The state has promised to pursue the construction of one, which will result in a wind farm in either Lake Erie or Lake Ontario. NYPA is in the final stages of deciding which wind farm proposal to greenlight, according to spokeswoman Sharon Laudisi. "We are in the final stages. I can't pinpoint an exact date. But we are on schedule still looking at second quarter," says Laudisi
  15. This weeks bird shredder news Voluntary rules to reduce bird deaths? http://www.ogd.com/article/20110403/ADV ... 2/-1/ogd01 "Bird conservation groups want the guidelines to be mandatory rules. Wind power proponents say the guidelines are too strict as they stand." "But the American Bird Conservancy, Washington, D.C., says the guidelines aren't strong enough because they are optional. "The conservancy believes we must have mandatory standards to reduce impacts from wind energy," said Kelly Fuller, wind campaign coordinator. "The industry is not going to support standards even though they're optional." "Just across the Canadian border from proposed projects in Jefferson County, the Wolfe Island Wind Farm has a very high bird death rate per turbine, at 13.4 birds per turbine and a Canadian high of 0.27 birds of prey per turbine. The deaths have alarmed Canadian and U.S. conservation groups." At least we have the little old ladies from the American Bird Conservancy on our side.
  16. Latest blow pole news NYPA continues to seek site for offshore wind project The Palladium Times http://palltimes.com/articles/2011/03/2 ... 552891.txt Members of the Oswego County Environmental Management Council (EMC) continue to keep a close eye on the New York Power Authority’s (NYPA) plan for the development of an offshore wind turbine farm based in Lake Ontario or Lake Erie. EMC President Timothy Carroll said “If for some reason this wind farm gets produced at the western side of the (Lake Ontario) basin, and it turns out that, ‘Hey, this isn’t too bad,’ and people around here change their mind, we want to stay on top of things,†he said. “You just want try to avoid reacting to these things, and instead be ahead of them.†Legislators voiced “This zone would destroy recreational fishing in our lake and rivers, reduce property values, absolutely restrict recreational boating and sailing and severely impact tourism through the despoliation of the numerous scenic vistas, including what we all call the second-best sunset in the world,†said Legislator Shawn Doyle, R-Pulaski, during a committee meeting in March 2010 regarding the wind farm concept. Details of the proposals were not given.
  17. An interesting remark from a knowledgeable person. "Wide reporting of failures has an adverse impact on investor confidence." Wm.K.G. (Bill) Palmer, P.Eng , whose specialty was safety and risk management for Ontario Hydro, said this about safety and the wind industry, “A problem that exists is that unlike mature technologies where failure events are carefully documented, studied and shared so that the entire industry can learn from failures, the wind industry tends to be competitive, and focused on confidentiality. Wide reporting of failures has an adverse impact on investor confidence."
  18. Bird Shredder Bites the Dust I hope this happens to all of them. I hope nobody gets killed when it does. Sunday, March 20, 2011 shattered blade...again. there was another turbine blade that shattered this morning in the lee/dekalb county windfarm project by NextEra Energy Resources (approximately 4 miles from our home...we can see the shattered turbine from our property). there was debris thrown from the blade (more info to come on that). http://lifewithdekalbturbines.blogspot.com/
  19. Recent Bird-Shredder news NYPA Reviewing Proposals on Bird-Shredder Project NYPA says it will continue to review public input and is expecting to hold further public meetings on the topic. http://www.13wham.com/news/local/story/ ... si0JQ.cspx No lake Bird-Shredders on their minds County legislators oppose the project Erie became at least the seventh of nine New York counties fronting Lake Erie or Lake Ontario to oppose the placement of offshore windmills. http://www.buffalonews.com/city/communi ... 370224.ece State, federal agencies ready to regulate offshore Bird-Shredder development Wind turbines scheduled to be built in Lake Erie off Cleveland in 2012 may be the first in the water in the Great Lakes, and aren’t likely to be the last. Developers will have to address all of those concerns to obtain a lake bottom lease and the water obstruction and encroachment permits required to build wind turbines and electric transmission lines in the lake, Bristow said. http://www.goerie.com/apps/pbcs.dll/art ... 906/-1/RSS
  20. Two most important things I have found. Never let the meat get warm, quickly under lots of ice. Don't let the slime get on the meat, who wants to eat slime? blah I am undecided about bleeding the fish. It does make filleting less messy. I have always done it so maybe I don't know the difference. Trimming the fillets nice and clean is important as well.
  21. You can search through all of the old news items on this site http://www.wind-watch.org/news/category ... /new-york/ I have it set for NY state but you can change the search on the left side of the screen. I think the political bs in Ont has slowed this down for now. At least I hope it has.
  22. Wind Turbines are Hazardous to Human Health Alec N. Salt, Ph.D., Cochlear Fluids Research Laboratory, Washington University in St. Louis. In many cases, health effects and annoyance have been significant enough to force people to abandon their homes. Owners that are fortunate enough to negotiate a buy out by the offending wind turbine company are typically then "silenced" by the requirement to sign a non-disclosure agreement. In other cases, the home is abandoned and may be difficult to sell. A recent epidemiological studies suggests that significant disturbances of sleep and mental health can occur for people living in homes up to 5 kilometers away from some wind turbines. This is because infrasound is capable of traveling greater distances than the sound you normally hear. http://oto2.wustl.edu/cochlea/wind.html
  23. I heard (half heard) a news story the other day. $900 million federal budget cut to renewable handouts. Does anyone know the actual facts with this? If this is true it would seem to me that the marginal projects, like offshore wind would suffer the most from a cut like this.
  24. I just don't understand how so many so-called leaders of the world can have their heads in the sand with this. It must be good for votes with the uninformed. Big subsidies - big kickbacks? Why the £250bn wind power industry could be the greatest scam of our age - and here are the three 'lies' that prove it The first is the pretence that turbines are anything other than ludicrously inefficient. The most glaring dishonesty peddled by the wind industry — and echoed by gullible politicians — is vastly to exaggerate the output of turbines by deliberately talking about them only in terms of their 'capacity', as if this was what they actually produce. Rather, it is the total amount of power they have the capability of producing. The second great lie about wind power is the pretence that it is not a preposterously expensive way to produce electricity. No one would dream of building wind turbines unless they were guaranteed a huge government subsidy. The third great lie of the wind propagandists is that this industry is somehow making a vital contribution to 'saving the planet' by cutting our emissions of CO2. Even if you believe that curbing our use of fossil fuels could change the Earth's climate, the CO2 reduction achieved by wind turbines is so insignificant that one large windfarm saves considerably less in a year than is given off over the same period by a single jumbo jet flying daily between Britain and America.
