Seneca Seneca Lake - Lake Trout Derby
Sk8man replied to National Lake Trout Derby's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Gill-T - The weights have varied over the years from about 10 lb something to about 18 lbs (Brown). A rainbow or Landlock has never actually won the derby (yet). The lakers and browns have been the top money winners. There are launches in Geneva at the Chamber of Commerce (Visitors Center) (Lake Street and Rt#5 and 20, Seneca Lake State Park also right below Geneva on Rt. 5 1nd 20 (north end of L Seneca Lake). There is also a ramp at Barrett Marine and the canal on the Old Waterloo Road (not sure if open or charge), Sampson State Park (all new marine and launch), Rt. 96A on east side of lake, Lodi State Park off 96A south towards Watkins Glen, Clute Park in Watkins Glen at south end of lake, Severne Launch between Watkins and Long Point (west side heading north), and Roy's Marina just south of Geneva on Rt.#14. Stivers Marina is at the north end of the lake near the mouth of the Seneca River just as it meets the north end of the lake. Hope this helps. -

I saw on the news tonight that there is a 5 mph speed limit within 500 ft of the shoreline on both Seneca and Cayuga Lakes. They also reported that that is a lot of debris on both lakes and to exercise caution.

The reason I said you may have a poor ground or loose connection was based on the fact that I had the exact symptom you are reporting on my 135 Merc last weekend and when I traced it down that is what it turned out to be and it wasn't actually visible the wing nut on the terminal wasn't quite tight and that is all it took.I took the wires off the terminal and put them back on and tightened the crap out of it and bingo! I thought the connection was tight beforehand.

Before you do anything check to make sure the connections on the terminals of the battery are totally tightened down (not loose) or corroded. Your battery can be fully charged but not making a good connection.

Is it a transom mounted transducer? If so it must be located away from any sources of disturbance such as strakes and chines (ridges or areas where water channels as it flows past) on the hull. If you are not consistently marking bottom during travel the transducer may not be properly placed. The transducer may be too far to the outside of the hull and when on plane so that part of the hull is not consistently fully immersed at the right angle during travel. One thing to check before doing anything else is to check the sensitivity (or gain) setting on the new to you finder. If set too high you can be seeing all sorts of possible sources of "clutter on the display".

I bet I have you all beat in fishing time though by 81 I had already been fishing for 32 years but lets not forget about what this thread is about....recognition of a great fisherman that apparently influenced many others in a very positive way and that is more important than time spent doing anything.

Fishy is definitely your best bet as he can answer any of your questions as he is a good rig fisherman himself. It could greatly shorten your learning curve. -
