  1. We beat the hell out of our Cannon dual axis rod holders with daily use. They have held up well and are user friendly. I have no experience with the other comparable brand.
  2. Great to have all the Classic format events working together again. Kudos to all tourney chairmen.
  3. Chris I've had very good results/life out of napa marine batteries in a similar 24 volt system.
  4. Great job Oak guys! The final chapter of all this is to make sure they do not get eaten by the cormorants when they are released. Whether its direct stock or the vital pen fish the cormorants get too many. Region 8 reps are interested in knowing where any nests are along the Oak. They are willing to conduct control measures but they must know where the nests are. Thanks to DEC's Connie Adams for getting this rolling.
  5. Pat will be missed. Always around as a Tourney competitor and a valued volunteer who helped with the pen projects. His wife and family are in our thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace, Sandman.
  6. You can either have it professionally glassed or if its in a low traffic area you could install an inspection port.
  7. Reminder, 9am THIS Sat April 9th. Pen fish show in the catch of Lake Ontario anglers at a rate of 2:1. Volunteers at all the pen sites are valued and crucial to the success of these projects.
  8. Howard Tanner is a hero of mine. Always wanted to meet him-- please shake his hand for me if you get the chance. Not many gutty decisions being made like that anymore. So many positive changes have occurred to the Great Lakes because of his decision. I grew up next to a worthless sea of dead alewives. Time to relax the over zealous phosphorus control, pretty blue water is sterile. As for wild Chinook, they are the cream of the crop but so much of Great Lakes trib habitat is unsuitable. Time to create safe zones for the greatest fish that swims to spawn without harassment.
  9. I'm not sure what they are called these days but the old Jensen "Hot shot" side planer that they made for rivers would be ideal for flat lines off your Kayak.
  10. With the forecast, we will see you there. Thanks Tim.
  11. This is done out of the goodness of the Olcott fire company, made up of volunteers. We are very fortunate to have them in the harbor.
  12. Yvan , if nothings changed with the new weigh in plan may be a good idea to post here and on pullers the new public weigh in venue.
  13. You are on the right track with the oil changes and not beating them to death. Also, if they are carb motors it is very important that the carbs are maintained/tuned so they aren't "dumping gas." I have had 3 sets of 5.7's in the past all go from 5000 to 7800 hrs before replacement or rebuild. Don't let them get hot and use ethanol free fuel whenever possible. Engine oil that has zinc(if no catalytic converter) is also a good idea. As already stated, motors that sit idle in "dock queens" are usually much more problematic.
  14. It is way too soon to assess this years hatch, the alewives haven't even spawned yet. They would be looking to reinforce the belief that last years hatch didn't do well. As for hydro acoustic monitoring, it is still very limited in being able to measure yoy. We cause schools to skirt away when in the top 20, a large vessel is even more of a disturbance. On a positive note the emeralds are back and smelt are in the river.
  15. Aluminum tri-fold ramp for driving ATV into pick up bed. $60
  16. This unit comes with power cord but will need transducer and/or GPS dome. $50 A GPS dome may be available for an additional charge if needed.
  17. April 1st is considered "reservation day". That's officially day one for staff.
  18. King Slammin' is right, transient dockage is available at the Newfane town marina, but there is also the Wilson Boatyard and Bootleggers for marinas in Wilson. Welcome to Niagara county!
  19. Here is the announcement for those not on the Tournaments email list: The 32nd Lake Ontario Pro-Am Salmon Team Tournament out of Niagara, utilizing the ports of Olcott and Wilson, will be holding its contest this year May 20,21,22 2016. 3 full days of tournament fishing with opportunities for a 5 fish(trophy division) or 12 fish (classic division) competition--or both. For starters, once again there will be more than 100 percent payback for any money that comes in from entry fees and sponsors. More than 100%!!! It ALL goes to the fishermen. The Niagara Cup for the Trophy and Classic divisions respectively, will be offering up a separate pot of money for the winners. As of right now, the winners will receive an EXTRA $10,000 for the Classic and $5000 for the Trophy. Thats pretty darn good in addition to the entry fee purse. Rumors have been circulating that there isn't any money in this year's tournament. This is not true. For added excitement, Tournament chairmen(Niagara, Oswego, Sodus) are in the process of aligning together once again to offer an overall Lake Cup representing the longstanding tradition of events that are formatted with mixed species, no cull, observers, and the Classic divisions. Prize money is being put together for this as well. More details to come. The Niagara Pro-Am is the grand daddy of fishing tournaments on Lake Ontario. Some of the top teams on the lake compete to earn the right to be called the winner. Posted with permission of the Niagara Pro-Am chairman
  20. Posting for my wife and her committee. Inspired by a similar fundraising tournament held in Oswego in June, this years Niagara event will be August 19th 2016. Boats can leave from the ports of Olcott and Wilson. The event will raise funds for all types of women's cancer, and have a small purse and trophies for the ladies to compete for. Ladies teams will consist of 2--6 with a maximum of 2 men onboard. Teams can consist of private rec boats and Charter boats. A list will be created for Charter Captains who would like to be booked for the event by a womens team looking to participate. New info will be available as this comes together and the new facebook page is: Reelin' for a cure. https://www.facebook.com/Reelin-For-A-Cure-751320754999724/?fref=ts The email address is [email protected] if you have any questions or would like to help by volunteering or donating. Charter boats who are available that day that would like to be put on a list to be considered by some Ladies teams should also contact them.
  21. Sometimes it just isn't that simple. The size at AGE has not changed much over the years on Lake Ontario. The DEC uses age 3 Chinook as a barometer. There has definitely been a trend where Chinooks mature at a younger age. There is some evidence that fast growth can lead to this, but it is unclear. Age 4 Chinooks in the Great Lakes are the largest for obvious reasons, but that is always the smallest by number of mature Chinooks. IMO, early maturing Chinooks is more common in hatchery fish and could be caused by holding pens. If that's the case that trend is here to stay as pens are essential to create fishable numbers of Chinook with the increasing number of predators feasting on fingerling Chinooks( birds AND fish). There is not a 5 yr trend of growth reduction. If anything it's 2 years and its directly linked to the 2 record setting winters. In 2013 we were fortunate to set both 12 fish and 6 fish tournament format weight records( Oswego Pro-Am and ATOMMIK invitational) and we did it with King Salmon. We are all hoping this mild winter/early Spring will reduce some of the anxiety.
  22. You will need to at least skuff it and apply primer(epoxy barrier coat is preferred). Then you can use the thin ink-like paints that go on so thin you will never need to sand again. You do need to power wash as soon as the boat comes out each season if you are mooring it. We wipe with thinner and put a coat on each Spring.
  23. In the case of the Bass, this time it's not about fishing pressure but the decline is due to Cormorant and Goby predation
