Nice fish!
-
Started out at 5:30 with Pike Freak and couple of other usual suspects. Set up in 175 straight out and kept heading north. Temps all over the place and crazy currents at times. Found 46 deg down about 125 for a while. At 225 fow 100 down and 2.2 on the subtroll on a black and white NK with green tape Pike Freak got a nice king 17 lbs. I dropped something on a silver, orange and yellow DW on 6 colors of lead. Finished up with a 5lb king on the same NK at the same depth and called it a night. Lots of marks in the 225 area. Lots of streakers too. Changed up the speed in both directions but they wouldn't take it. It was a garbage dump out there at times. Caught some plastic, some deflated balloons and some sticks and weeds as well. Pike Freak already posted his picture and it was a pleasure fishing with him. Congrats on your first king.

Yeah, the price is steep there. I was right across from your slip to start the season but I moved over after they pushed that dock out. It got way too tight on the north side of the north dock. Last I heard that marina at Basil's was battling over the number of slips they could add because of the Bald Eagle nest back there. Some of the proposed slips would have been within a restricted distance to the nest. I haven't heard anything on it in a while now, so hopefully they killed it all together. The slips were going to be in compliment the condo project that they are building on that hill next to Basil's. I was in Maine last weekend and it sounds like I should be thankful. It's only going to get worse I think.

Yeah, I-bay is insane at times. It is like running the gauntlet trying to get back to Sutter's. Your head needs to be on a constant swivel. We dragged a boat off of the sand about 5 feet from the rocks a couple of years ago at the end the channel. He said he lost power but his prop was trimmed up out of the water. The wind and waves were slowly pushing him into the rocks and out of 6 boats we were the only ones to offer assistance. We were the smallest lowest powered boat there and the Sheriff was just inside the channel writing life jacket tickets. The marina back by Bazils wants to add 150 or so more slips too. I don't think the bay can handle all of that traffic. I'm giving serious thought to Hughes for next year. I never took a safety course, just learned from other people, but I agree it is time to start requiring it for everyone. Not to make this about sail boats and power boats, but I'm not sure why they have to run the sailboat races east and west across the entire width of the bay either.

I just started fishing a 24' Thompson this year. Love it so far. The gunnels are very high which can make dealing with the downrigger balls a little tough at times if you are using a subtroll, but not intolerable. If you have a good reach you're OK. The boat handles rougher weather well. There is definitely ample room in the back when dealing with doubles and a net minder all at once. Mine has a 4.3 with an 8HP kicker and the fuel economy is great. I was running an 18' aluminum before this with a 70HP outboard and dragging a drift bag when trolling. It only costs me 5-10 dollars more per trip now average. In the spring when we were sticking close to port it was actually cheaper per trip. I would agree that a survey is a must though. Your gonna want a bucket for the men's room though, the gunnels are just high enough.

We took two salmon this weekend. One king 57 down over 390 fow and one coho on 7 color lead core in about 250 fow. There does not seem to be too many salmon around right now and last week there was a lot of east wind to mess things up. Earlier this year all the action was in the top 40 feet. I'm betting that if you find a good depth there are probably a lot of people who would love to hear about it right now. Good luck

Fished east of I-Bay on Saturday evening. Started in about 150 and worked out to 225. Fairly slow with one steelie and one coho. Both came on a Silver Horde spoon on 7 colors of lead. Don't know the name, just green and orange with silver in the middle. Had 3 or 4 releases with nobody home on the same spoon. Sunday we went straight north from the bay and dropped the lines around 240 fow at about 5:45am. Screen was pretty barren. Moved out deeper and hit a 13lb and change king in 390 fow 57 down on a rigger with some spoon I have never seen before. A Larry special from the 80's. Black on the back with a fire tiger type pattern on the front. Everything was slow for awhile so we moved west towards Braddocks. We took a good hit on carbon 14 on 300' of copper in 250 fow but no one home. Eventually made our way back toward shallower water. Found a nice pocket of lakers in 135 fow on the bottom and ran a laker program for the remainder. Did 5 lakers between 5 and 10 lbs on chartreuse cowbells and peanuts. 6 for 8 on the day with lakers saving our butts. Once again I do not have the pictures but I'm sure I will soon. The flies were many and merciless. Jack

Fished Saturday in shallow to looking for some brownies out near Hedges, not much happening though. Moved toward 200 fow still east of the bay and picked up 2 small kings and a steelie. One king and the steelie came in together on a rigger with a cheater. Watermelon was the spoon producing. All in all a pretty slow day for us. Sunday we fished in front of the bay and out east a little bit. Picked up a decent brown on a rigger to start, maybe 6 or 7 pounds. I honestly forgot the depth. Spent the rest of the day between 120 and 250 fow. I think 190 was productive and 135 as well. Pretty much just stayed on our GPS points Plenty of marks. Good bite on a little bit of everything, divers, riggers, lead, spoons mostly with a little bit of fly action. We were dragging a spinny and fly behind a diver, or thought we were. Brought in the diver and the rest had broken off. Don't know how long we dragged that for. Watermelon was hot on the riggers 25-40 feet down with some action on the 42nd spoon and fly as well. Divers were probably running about 70-8- feet down. Mixed bag with the lakers being the majority. Four or five 7-10 pound lakers. Dropped a nice steelie at the boat and boated a couple of small kings. Dropped 3 or 4 fish as well. Better day than Saturday was for sure. Someone else has all the pictures. A likely story I know.

That sounds like the correct strategy. Especially the beer and Warren Haynes part.

The transom was replaced this past winter and apparently, aside from not replacing the bellows, when they wired everything back up they wired the auto bilge pump to the incorrect side of the battery shutoff. So the bilge pump never even turned on. My fault for not doing more thorough testing. It doesn't look like any water got into the engine or fuel tank at least and all of the electronics seem OK. I'll be back up and going in a couple of weeks hopefully. Whom do you use for your outdrive work? -

Hey Hans, Nice fishing. You didn't happen to glance over towards my boat when you got back by any chance? The bellows gave way on Sunday sometime or another and she almost went completely down. Fortunately someone noticed and called the marina. I'm just trying to figure out when the problem started and how fast she took on the water. Everything was dry when I left her on Saturday afternoon. I don't know what would cause that problem when she was just sitting in the slip. Jack -

That's good to know, thanks for the info. I've been wanting to start doing a little more Walleye fishing this year. -

The fire tiger. -
Bad idea. Tried to head west out of I Bay Thursday afternoon. There was a 3 plus foot chop, a strong west wind and nothing but milkshake as far as the eye could see. We didn't think it was worth it to fight the wind and waves west past the river so we went back into the bay and set up some sticks for Walleye and Pike. Gold and black Challenger and a fire tiger Yozuri. Picked up a double header just south of the bridge and landed a 4 lb Brown. The other got off but felt like a decent fish. Trolled through a few more times, lots of marks but no takers. To the dock for a cold beer. Hopefully things will clear up a little by the weekend.

We were wondering where everyone was today. We only saw two other boats all day. It must have been all that debris. -

Fished east of I-Bay between Shipbuilders and Hedges first thing. Solid brown bite between 10 and 20 fow. Temp was holding around 45 degrees. We went 18 for 25 with the biggest going about 8lbs. Froggy pattern Challenger did most of the damage but the silver and black Rattlin Rogue had good action also. We had a couple of fun passes where we couldn't keep more than 3 of 6 rods in the water at a time. We had scattered luck on the riggers. We moved out a little deeper later into the stained water and picked up a couple of small Kings. Temp was down around 41 degrees toward the 100fow mark. Saw a bunch of Lakers out around 60-70fow. A few took a run at the riggers but none were that committed. It was nice to see the weather hold out like it did after rain had been the forecast all week.
