  1. I had some similar problems. I had a few break offs on the bait side about three inches from the diver a few times. I probably let the line out a little too quick, but the edges of those divers give no mercy if your line rubs on them. I am even careful when they are out of the water not to let the line rub on the edge. I am going to take a file to the edges this year and get rid of the sharpness. The steel leader idea is a good one too. Nothing worse than pulling a diver in to realize that you were dragging nothing but 3 inches of line behind it for an hour. Other than that, they work pretty good.
  2. I used to use a toaster oven to heat gears and bearings before pressing them on to transmission and differential shafts. They heat up much quicker than a regular oven and are very portable too. That might work for this application, but you obviously won't have the volume that an full oven has.
  3. Why do I leave fish to find fish?
  4. If the plural of Goose is Geese, Why isn't the plural of Moose Meese?
  5. Turning Point signs in Fairport. Joel does great work.
  6. Thanks for everyone's input. Sounds like I'll just keep em black. Then again, maybe I'll go hot pink with sparkles on one of em just as an experiment. I'll call it the disco ball. Hehe. Jack
  7. I currently run, and have always, black downrigger weights. I was thinking of painting them a different color this year. I have seen numerous different colors and tape jobs. What is the consensus on various colors and tapes or does it even really matter? Thanks.
  8. Pardon my ignorance but who is Mark Grisanti?
  9. Umm, let's see, umm, an Albatross?........... No, no that's not it.
  10. I started building rods a few years ago. The start up isn't too bad if you stick to basic tools and equipment. Get the hand wrapper to start instead of the power wrapper, etc. I never really saved anything over buying the rods, but the rods were better quality than what are normally for sale. Better quality guides, reel seats etc. You also get personalized rods built to your preferences that are one of a kind. I originally bought a starter kit for about $110.00 that had the basics with an instructional video on the basic steps. Add to that a drill for turning cork handles and some basic low cost tools and supplies and you are up and running. Mudhole.com is an excellent source for materials and tools.
  11. I used the Scottys on my last boat for three years and they did OK. There is a lot of tension on them if you keep them at 90 deg to the boat. I used to keep them angled 45 deg back which took a lot of the torsional stress off of them. I could see where they may have the potential to fail after enough use though.
  12. I would definitely be interested. Do you know if it is a GL3, GLX, IMX etc?
  13. If anyone knows of or has any G Loomis rod blanks for sale please contact me. Specifically looking for fly rod blanks but I am interested in whatever is out there. Thanks for looking (585) 370-8659 Jack
  14. For a little while we did. We didn't get in real close though. It was already pretty crowded from the looks of it.
  15. Headed straight over to the river this morning and set up in 35 fow. Took one king about 8-10lbs fairly quickly on an NK 28 black and white on a small dipsy about 50 ft. back. Nothing happening for the rest of the morning until we got out front of I-Bay. One small brown there on a Stinger blue dolphin off of a downrigger. It is nice to fish in the cooler weather.
  16. We headed out after work for a quick fish. Set up in 55fow at 5:30 and worked out to 80 fow. Took a small brown almost right away on an NK C5 fire tiger off a dipsy. Had another hit on the other dipsy a little later and that was it. We marked some nice pods of fish from time to time between 65 and 75 fow. Water was about 20 degrees cooler than last weekend. 48 degrees 55 down over 75 fow. Not that temp has alot to do with it right now. I think we should have stayed a little shallower but hindsight is always easy. The weather held out long enough to get a few hours in which was reward enough in itself.
  17. Nice!!! Congrats on breaking in the boat for salmon. Looks like a few days of bad weather may be coming, but I'm sure I'll see you out there over the next couple of weeks.
  18. Nice fishing. I've had to do the old push it through and cut off the barb routine once, that's enough for me. I swear those fish wait until your hand gets close enough and then try to exact some revenge.
