  1. Mr Rabbit : Great idea! I like the sewer pipe idea! Cheap is good in this instance. I'll probably make a holder right near or on the DR mount using sewer pipe or similar. Maybe a sewer pipe cap if cheap. Capt Hook: Yes, strain on the DR is why I asked. Couldn't imagine the ball swinging and bouncing on the boom. Burrows: I have a used Cannon easytroll. One of the ones with the white body and metal boom. Thanks guys! That half of the query is answered. Jack
  2. After getting sidetracked by family responsibilities for the past year I am finally getting back to setting up a 12' boat for trolling in Canadice/Hemlock. I am almost finished building an aluminum DR mount to bolt to the transom and got to thinking about how to store the DR ball while running at speed (not trolling). I don't want the ball rolling/banging around the bottom of the boat. Is there a SOP for storing DR balls? Suggestions? I am also considering getting a 40lb trolling motor and battery. For Canadice especially it would be nice to have a quiet method of propulsion. I have no idea if 40lb is enough power for this 12' boat pulling an 8-10lb DR ball through the water. Has anyone had experience with this? I have been looking at batteries and see Wal-Mart has two sizes, a 27 and a 29. The 29 looks too big for the plastic battery boxes. Is there a big difference between the 27 vs. the 29? All I plan on running is the trolling motor and a fish finder. Thoughts? Jack
  3. Very nice boat/(1989?)motor/2012 trailer comes with anchor, line, life jackets, lights. For sale due to health. Contact me via PM for more info.
  4. Zack, How far below the three way is the 1# weight?
  5. Might be able to buy a small outboard for that much moola. The joys of boat ownership. Maybe you'll get lucky and it won't cost so much.
  6. When it comes to Hemlock/Canadice this sort of thing is of concern since these lakes are drinking water sources for those of us who live in Rochester. It also makes me wonder about the food safety of eating fish from these waters? It would be nice if DEC can explain these fish but I wonder if they worry about scaring Rochestarians or just don't have the resources since DEC was gutted years back. Sending pictures to The Conservationist might also be a good idea.
  7. Is it really important to know where an exact temperature water is as opposed to knowing where the bait fish and trout are? I'm new to this and can't afford a thermometer on my DR ball. I have been wondering how to locate the thermocline/fish. Then it struck me that maybe it is better in my case to just locate the baitfish/fish on the fishfinder and work from that info. I'm new to all this so the more I learn the more questions I come up with.
  8. My wife "has" a 75gal tetra aquarium that I do most of the maintainance on. The tetras are a variety of types including what is considered a very fragile family commonly known as hatchet fish that act like trout. We have it set up with dirt on the bottom covered with gravel to support many plants. Watching the fish is interesting and fun. The hatchet fish act so much like trout and have adapted exclusively to top water feeding. I do a 25% water change every month or two. The water is not exactly the same temperature as what is added to the tank. The fish tend to adapt to the temp change readily and if too far off will just move away from the usually cold new water compared to the tank water. Sometimes the fish seem to actually like the colder water. Mind you these are very fragile fish compared to the panfish we are thinking about. I may be totaly wrong but I don't think that at this time of year the fish in the finger lakes are going to see a rapid enough or drastic enough change to kill them. I sure would be interested to know just what happened but my guess is that we never will no matter what the cause be it natural or man made.
  9. Bob, The whole thing sounds weird to me. Temperatures in large bodies of water usually take a long time to change. If it's a turnover it would seem that the fish would move to their comfort zone. Maybe if they are in the spawning mood is changes everything but isn't it a bit early for spawn of warm water species? My last two experiences with calling DEC weren't productive on facts or service (lots of lip service though) so I would look for answers elsewhere. The good fishing places I knew as a kid have been trashed or depeated so now I just look for any opertunity I can. Fishing pressure, invasive species and polution may be bigger factors than we realize. If fracking gets approved it may be the death blow to fishing. Enjoy fishing while we can and put some back in the lakes and streams.
  10. That weather wouldn't be much fun in a small boat either! Thanks for the report!
  11. Has anyone fished Hemlock or Canadice this spring or are they still frozen ?
  12. Along with the warmer climate and competing brown trout we also have development. Some of my favorite small stream haunts in region 9 have new homes and a lot of the owners have turned the banks into lawns rather than the natural cover that once shaded the streams. Given all the new reasearch methods on line I can't imagine that serious fishermen aren't aware of even the tinyest stream that might hold trout. Just having old fashioned topo maps will show potential streams if you know what to look for. Add google earth and the web and you can find trout. Then there are the locals who have known for generations where the trout are. I have seen pools cleaned out by both locals and heron. Conditions are very different than when I was a kid or even just before the movie that got everyone wanting to be a fly fisherman for trout. I'm very much a proponant of native fish and don't think non-native samonoids should have been introduced in lakes or streams. The plus side of browns is that they are a lot tougher when it comes to some of the climatic changes we are seeing. I do agree with BSmaster that a study is probably in order. I also think this shouldn't be done with public knowledge. The best native brook trout nursury I have seen is in a private section of a stream.
  13. With global warming and other environmental issues including intorduction of brown trout, I wonder if brook trout are realistic to re-establish. Both lake trout and brook trout are members of the char family. Splake are hybrid lake trout X brook trout. The only place I have caught brook trout are Spring Brook in Caledonia and in the north country. Brook Trout are beautiful !
  14. Hermit, Took some time to dig out the Yamaha. It was buried in my Dad's stuff which is another story. Anywho, I looked at the tiller and found the friction adjustment. It appears to be frozen but at least fixing it would be a great solution. Finding the yamaha part might be an interesting search but then maybe I can machine one . Then Lets hope that I can get the yamaha to idlele down. Thanks, great to have all of you guys to bounce stuff like this issue on. More heads helps! Jack
  15. Interesting, maybe this will be simpler than I thought.
  16. Sounds like I need to try the 6 hp while dragging a bucket and see if there is a way to set up the throttle so it stays put at the desired speed. Will also try the 2hp and see how long it runs on a given amount of gas. or ...... maybe just row the boat
  17. The 2hp runs out of gas in about 1-1.5 hrs at traveling speed on a heavier boat. I duno about at trolling speed, probably a lot longer. It is a fairly smooth motor (1981 vntage) which may be due to the small cylinder. It has an advance lever which can be adjusted and stays put. It would be easy to rig a tiller extension since I want to be on the middle thwart. The 6hp is smooth/strong/reliable but..... I don't want to have to try to hold a speed using the tiller/trottle. To use this motor I need to have a good way to set/adjust the speed. I'm not sure how slow this one is capable of moving the boat. I want to get down to 1mph. I don't want to fiddle with tools to adjust the speed but being a "thing maker" might be able to make something. Safety? Storms? Lightning? Lightnings are racing sailboats I've spent a fair amount of time on the water in canoes and sailboats and though thunder storms aren't my druthers I don't worry about them too much either.
  18. I'm in the process of setting up my 12' trolling yacht. I plan on fishing Hemlock/Canadice with this boat. One of the big questions is how to power it. I have two outboards, a 6hp yamaha and a 2 hp evinrude and oars Biggest concern is speed control. I plan on using a Luhr Jenson speed indicator to measure speed. The 6hp is fine for getting from one place to the next at a fairly brisk speed (12mph?) if needed but has issues in terms of slow speed control due to the twist grip throttle. It is also heavier than the 2HP. The advanage is that it has a remote tank. I haven't tried the 2hp on this boat but based on experience with this motor it will probably be a lot more controllable at low speed and will move the boat adequetly albeit a bit slow. The down side is that it doesn't have a remote tank and the thought of trying to fill the tank in the middle of the lake isn't actually very appealing. I am leaning toward the 2hp. I am thinking about methods of on the lake fueling including using a remote tank and hand pumping the gas into the motor tank as needed or possibly finding a container that is easy to handle and can be dumped into the tank fast and easy. Thoughts/suggestions? You guys should be able to have a lot of fun with this one Jack
  19. I'm kind of a "glass half empty" type and having been around boats a lot, I have thought of a lot of ways to tangle that DR The mount will have 4 bolts holding it to the transom with various chunks of aluminum to spread the load on the transom. It's probably a bit too heavy duty but I have the materials 10 bolts to hold the whole thing together and 4 FH screws to hold the mounting plate to the mount. The factory mounting plate looks like the weak link! I'm also thinking about power and will post a seperate thread on that
  20. Please let me know how it works! Our economy needs your help! For now I'll be happy to get my DR on the boat and see if I can fish it w/o ending up tangled in the prop or worse! I got the mount parts cut out yesterday and just need to drill and assemble. Once the mount is assembled, mounting it on the boat should be interesting. My goal is to catch just one fish this year while trolling. If I do better than that I'll be thrilled! Jack
  21. W/O you guys I'd still be scratching my head over what to do to start! Jack
  22. Marty, Thanks for the translation! Learning the trolling lingo is sort of like learning about flyfishing though there isn't much written about trolling! The greese trap sort of looks like linked perch spreaders. Where do you get them? or How do you make them? Has anyone added leaders to the A rig to give the school of bait more of a 3D effect? Jack
  23. You mean trollng with an Alabama rig? Peanut?
  24. I would guess that a 22 would work half as well as a 44 Given the price difference and availability issues probably go with Bladerunner
  25. If only Sutton actually stocked the #44! Was told by one of their dealers that they just don't care but won't sell the business. Go figure......
