  1. excuse my absence. Didn't fish much for 3 years until this year (Service related disabilities from paratrooping w 82nd). anyways on to my fishing concern help appreciated with a bit of detail if possible. after nearly 50 years of fishing for pike and musky I just started this year to try my luck at figure 8's. I caught quite a few some were follows , some came up form the other way under the boat to hit the bait. The trouble is I've lost all the bigger fish that hit while figure 8'ing. I was told that when a good one hits while top side or figure 8'ing that don't immediately pull back and set the hook but to let the fish fight the rod even putting the rod end into the water a bit to try and force the fish to run or dive down then set the hook. The reason is that when y pull back to set the hook when the fish is only inches under the water doesn't provide good hook sets since the angle is bad for good hook set. so let em fight the pole until they make a move out or down. So far I lost 2 mid forties doing figure 8's, thy came up shook their heads and were gone. Your input and thoughts are much appreciated.
  2. They are in until after Columbus day. After that they can be removed at any time. Been biting pretty good when the winds lies down enough to fish. Best, Jim
  3. Pike - Movie. often have raked walleye, bass other pike, etc. Seen plenty of 20" to 27" walleye that have been raked by Esox.
  4. I'm in the process of buying a Minn Kota Bow Mount Terrova w I-pilot and spot-lock for my Lund Fury. To old to keep using my 28 lp navy anchor. Many here know how quick the finger lakes can drop-off. Typically a bit of shallow weeds or a point then very steep drop-off. That's where I intend to fish so location is critical when trying to hold the drop-off. Move a little to much and your in either thick shallow weeds or (40 to 70+)' of water. Bottom line guys any use Minn Kota spot-lock? If so how close does it hold your boat to the "spot"?, even with a moderate wind say up to (12 -15)/mph. Assuming I'm not working against the wind. Thks in advance and tight lines.
  5. To this old man when there removed I'm done. Had the wind push my boat sideways once took forever to pull it back enough to get past the trailer bunks, agreed.
  6. Many of our better fish came in late September until the state removes the docks (~ mid October). I wish they'd leave them in until end of October.
  7. Haven't created a post in some time. Had to take last year off due to ARMY - service related injuries. Conesus has been my home lake for ...... Heard from a few the pike and tigers were very slow last season. Wondering if any forum members spent much time on Consensus last year. If so how was the pike and tiger fishing for fish of ~ 30" or more. Caught a few jumbos on Conesus in the last 10 years (38 to 43)", hope there still in there. Thks ahead for any responses.
  8. Not to sure on that. Today's Rochester D&C states: "Out: Recreational boats Launches. Sorry boaters NY issued guidelines calling for all recreation boats launches to be close." date of publication 4-19-2020. several supportive URL's: https://www.syracuse.com/coronavirus/2020/04/coronavirus-ny-temporarily-suspends-use-of-all-iOuts-boat-launches-for-recreational-use.html https://parks.ny.gov/covid19/
  9. Not sure where these rumors of NYS launches open started. Today's news states all marina's and state launches are closed due to Covid-19. Seager marina's on is closed until further notice as is Smith Brothers.
  10. State launches on Conesus and Canondadge launches closed until?
  11. One hell of a fish, Kudes. And I thought the 48+ " we got few years back was a giant.A fish fd a lifetime must have been nice to show the kids live,
  12. No choice here the marina where I store boat is closed until? Will it opens for walleye - pike, not counting on it. Hope thhe virus peaks soon after that things return begin to normalize. Stay safe all
  13. I differ take into account the loss in Mutual and Stocks. Some of us have to draw on them to supplement income. So yes a $1200 or whatever the incentive plan eventually does matter and is critical to many.
  14. The spots and coloring are typical of a pike. Like any fish slight variations exist, even seen a few with a blue background in Canada. I believe it's a very nice sized regular northern pike.
  15. Avoid storms if possible. On rare occasion despite weather predictions one can descend upon Y. Get to the launch r if severe enough the most convenient private slip. Any folks I encountered didn't mind letting me tie up for a while in an emergency. Once It came in so quick within (5 - 10) minutes I couldn't see more than 5 - 6 feet in front of boat, with high waves, thunder - lightening to boot. Even with bilge pump running I took on so much water the back of boat was swamped. Couldn't plane due to visibility, very concerning to say the least.
  16. Tough fishing current snags, etc. Also the river fishermen tend to keep things to themselves. However all said and done lots of walleye in the river some very big ones to.
  17. Can't say from photo only. A great fish likely around ~ 20 pounds ~ 40". Might consider a bump board, plenty of nice ones out there.
  18. Been chasing them > 40 years, this is spot on. I've found the best window is usually mid June to mid - late July (as mentioned once weeds start up and waters in mid 60's). Then again in September. All depends on water temp as it approaches 80 degrees F things generally slow down for us. BTW we all desire the bigger ones.
  19. Your a better man than I. Seen hundreds do this over the years nada.
  20. Pike and Musky do this all the time, very common behavior. Why well, heard theories but?, but I'll tell you the fish that's displaying this behavior won't bite..
