I remember when you started your build. Several conversations at the launch on how to go about it. You actually helped me in tweeking things. Those old offshore's are tanks. If that had been me, my rig would have been in pieces. This thread has been very helpful to all of us, no matter what size rig. Bottom line, we all dodge a bullet sooner or later. Hope you're crew has recovered. See you soon.

I'm looking at inflatables. Wondering if the manuals are good. Can't put a price on safety but $60 verses $150? My vests are great but bulky. That's the point I guess.Whistles and light sticks being added next time im at my boat! Im gonna bungee a vest behind each of my front two seats and cargo the spares along the side

With the start of the combat season approaching, I for one have reflected on many experiences seen and shared. Every season I go through my gear several times before making the big run. Small crafters must be extremely vigilant, constantly paying attention to our surroundings and educating anyone on board for the worst scenerio. Most folks on this sight would give anyone the shirt off their backs. I always remind myself that once you clear the break water, what ever happens next, I own it. Be safe, be prepared, and always leave your ego at the dock. They're just fish.
I now have whistles and glow sticks in my pfds. See you on the pond.

So glad everyone is ok offshore, somethings are unavoidable. Sounds like you're training kicked in just fine. There's no thinking, just doing. You can have all the equipment and training in the world but survival instincts make it or brake it. You've got a tough crew. They must have learned from someone. Hug your family , regroup, and get back on the horse. Humility is just a reminder that we're all vulnerable.
You're friend, Clark.

I would like to make a formal apology to Chinook 35 , Signalman, and all fellow skippers for my knee jerk reaction on Dan P's thread. I recommend to all fellow small crafters to spend numerous hours educating yourselves about the risks of big water. If it wasn't for a bunch of caring folks on this site I probably wouldn't be doing it. Having grown up a salt, and admiring my father's seamanship, it's just natural to want to be out there. How can you not. I've been waved off the O by Coast Guard, taken on water to your feet, towed fellow boaters to port, traded info, etc. Always wear pfds, extra bilge, extra gas, several mayday cotacts, anything you can think of. But know that when she hits you in the face you need to get out quickly. I understand that most captains earn a living on the O, alot frown on small crafters catching inshore skips, and staging salmon. This year has been in our favor so it's a responsibility to educate us on how serious this sh#t is. Every season they pull boats and people off the bottom. Have seen it 1st hand, as I'm sure alot of you could tell some stories. So I'm just a fat guy in a little boat dreaming for the day of running with wind at my back. Goodluck, good fishing, and be humble. Works for me. .........sometimes.

Well you know, we're all just a bunch of idiots, grateful for what we have, and should know better than to think we can play in the deep end of the pool. I've had my 6pk for 8 yrs now, My pop sailed a 110 scooner from Boothbay to Galveston. They tied me to the main mast. I run a 16 with a 25 tiller, and kill it. Just sayin.I think you need to take a good look at chinook 35 post it speak,s for itself.
Nice rigs folks!
