  1. After reading this post and pondering the reasons y i spend TO MUCH money and TO MUCH time fishing,I think i can finally answer WHY I FISH? My grandfathers paved the way for me into the world of an outdoorsman. One grandfather was more into hunting then fishing and tought me the appreciation of the woods and world of hunting and fishing the deleware river. My other grandfather was a great fisherman. At the age of 8 i was running leadcore lines and sending downriggers down fishing for lake trout on Charleston Lake, Ont. Canada. When i was 12 I had a friends dad ask me to go to Cayuga lake with him and show him how to troll for lake trout with his new downriggers and leadcore combos. This style of fishing in NEPA isnt very common ,but becouse of grandpa it was second nature to me. In 3 hrs of fishing we got 4 lakers then had motor problems but had a great time. Also at the age of 12 i got my first lick at a king salmon. Grandpa only had a V-bottom 14ft smokercraft so for our birthdays (1st week of September) we fished salmon river durring the salmon run. We caught fish and it was a blast. Occasionally the lake would be nice and we would troll for a chance at a silver salmon and only once i hooked up and after a 30min fight i lost it at the boat. I wasn’t a bit upset thou. I told grandpa that was incredible. Nothing like the battle of big king on the lake. As the years went by grandpa couldnt do the drive nomore(3hrs) and as i hit my teens i lost interest and started hanging out with the wrong crowd. It took me a few years to figure out what i wanted in life but I always knew One thing i had to have. A big boat all setup to fish lake ontario so i can put a silver salmon on the deck. After meeting my fishing/hunting partner (my fiance) we bought a flat bottom 16 ft boat and hit the salmon river and caught a few kings running the river. I even had that boat (equipped with an evenrude 4.5hp) on the lake trolling tryin for my silver salmon lol. That’s what nightmares are made of, when the winds blow out of the north and im fishing 100fow from port Ontario. So we bought our “86” trophey 2460. Last year i achieved my silver salmon many times over. Alot of my rookie success comes from the members of this site showing me the ins and outs of the lake. Lake Ontario fishing has now become a huge part of our lives now. Me and my fiance are getting married in August and my bachelor party is gonna be me and my brothers fishing Lake Ontario. Our honeymoon? Yes me and her last week of August fishing Lake Ontario. I take a lot of pics and videos on the boat and there was a short video i took last year, that i look at now and think these are the best days of our lives. I reacently lost my grandfather Who showed me Lake Ontario fishing on 12/9/18 and not a day goes by i dont think about him and what he instilled in me and i fish with him every time im out there. My pop pop passed away march 2016 and every time i walk in the woods he’s there walkin right along side me. It is becouse of these men “WHY I FISH” EBA3964F-CD69-4DD4-B8A3-FFFD3449A308.MOV
  2. And with the couple warm days i got the itch to uncover the boat and get workin on it. Installed my two planer mast mounts, two big jon swivel bases, two cannon swivel bases and swapped out my volvo 275 outdrive for a brand new 275. Next step, disconnect and pull out the motor to replace the oil pan. Then finally lift the boat with my excavator to get my new trailer under it and off to Lake Ontario I go. I always loved the winter and goin icefishing, but after fishing Lake Ontario last year I’m hooked and can do without the ice.
  3. Very nice video to watch durring these cold winter days. I love the respect you have for those who come and and gone. Makes me think of my familys property on the Delaware River, and my great grandfather and all his buddys who been passed away long ago. They tought me that river inside and out, but most importantly the appreciation of the river and the outdoors. Very nice video. Thanks
  4. I am a dozer operator at the keystone landfill in PA. We get fiberglass boats in quite often. I rip them off the trailer with an excavator and have a blast crushing them in the dozer. Not sure about Ny landfills but at keystone you scale in drive up tell spotter u need help getting it off then scale out. Pay the man and out the gate.
  5. Awesome videos. This will be my second season on the big lake so on the off season i put many hrs watchin videos to see how other captains rig up there boats and see there spreads. Definitely helps with riggin my boat and spread. Think i watched all your videos two and three times. Keep it up lookin forward to more this season
  6. Will do. Like i said i gotta look into it more and thanks for givin me a starting point.
  7. I checked out the only one i can find at fish usa and its a planer motor and runs at 55-60RPM. The big jon rigger motor runs at 110-115RPM. Im leaning more toward spend $100 to have it rebuilt. Dont want to take the chance of spendin $129 and it bein under powered or not fitting right. I’m gonna look into this a little more
  8. Yup found them also the lord of rigger. I search some old topics here and im definitely not the first lookin for a righer motor or rebuild. Thanks again
  9. I havent thought of that. Thank you. Any idea the name of place?
  10. I purchased a boat for the trailer and brand new volvo penta 275 outdrive and it came with two nice big jon downriggers with dual rod holders One works great but the other keeps blowin the reset when i put power to it. I figure its gotta be a short in the motor. If anyone has a motor layin around they dont need send me a PM and a price. Brand new they are $200 and i really dont want to spend that much if i can get a used motor somewhere. Thank you guys. I appreciate it. Also if you have any knowledge of these riggers and think it may be something other then Replacing the motor please let me know. Thanks. Mike
  11. Got out for the first time on the ice this year. Put a hurting on some big perch. Fished 10-3:00. Kept 24 perch 12”-16” released a handfull of smaller and a few platter gills. I'm Pa and lake wallenpaupack is in the back yard. Gonna try getting on some NY ice this year but dont know where to start.
  12. I have an older cannon mag 10 with 4 foot boom for sale. Everything works as it should.i put new cable on it last year. The plastic case that screws on is missing a few screws and has silicone around it and shows the signs of bein used. Asking $150 OR will consider tradeing for other Lake Ontario fishing gear. I would be interested in wire dipsey combos,flashers/flys Pm what ya got, worst i can say is Not interested. I can accept paypal and ship but i would much rather exchange in person so theres no surprises. I am from Lake Ariel,PA Thanks. Mike
  13. I just wanted to thank all you guys for helping me out. I got all the gear i was looking for, at some really good prices. I met with multiple members buying and swapping gear and you all are really good people in my book. Not lookin to make ridiculous money on your old gear and helping me with advice and pointers. Thanks again and best of luck in 2019
  14. I am selling a whole bunch of J-Plugs that I acquired from buying whole collections of fishing gear. I broke them down to lots of 14. Most are used but in good condition. Some are new. With each lot i will include at least 2 trouble hook harness’s. One small one large. I am asking $40+S&H per lot and am open to offers. private message me with offers. I am from Lake Ariel,PA(near Scranton). Thank You, Mike.
  15. Awesome video and great catch. I grew up in Pittston PA right next to the Suquehanna river and everyday after school fished for muskie,Pike, and walleye and i only got a hanfull of muskie but nothing like that. Takes alot of time and patience to get into toothy critters like that. Thanks for sharing
  16. I’m lookin for the following gear to get my boat fully rigged up for the 2019 season. I got an 1986 bayliner trophy 2460 hardtop so i want to run single mast’s of each side. I have no cooper setups and this year i want to expand my spread. Lookin for 300-500 copper. And if anyone has any wire dipsey combos there lookin to get rid of. If some of you guys got some extra gear layin around and want to make a few dollars send me a PM. Im from scranton Pa so depending where your from i may nees it shipped but i have a paypal account if that helps. Thank you. Mike
  17. 2018 was my first year on the big lake and absolutely enjoyed every min on it. So I’m dedicating this winter to getting my boat 100% gear up for 2019. To spend more time up there im thinking about buying a pull behind camper and finding a marina that i will be able to put the boat in a slip for the year and rent a campsite. A guy told me about catfish creek but i want to look around and get some input of where a good safe place to keep the boat. Especially after hearing guys having boats broken into last year and gear stolen. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  18. Last year i boughta garmin ECHOMAP 73sv. It comes with side vu and down vu imaging. I tried using it once or twice but side or down imagining did not work. After doin some research i realized i need a different transducer but i am unsure of what transducer i need. Does anybody have one of these units or any knowledge of garmins and the transducers? Thank you I appreciate any input.
  19. After one year of fishing i can 100% agree with ya. Normally the wife runs the boat and does a dam good job. I run the gear and when we hook up she brings them in. One weekend she had to work so i brought an old friend who just got in the way and after he had a few drinks became a liability so that ended the already frustrating trip after fishing 3 hrs.
  20. Wow. Talk about putting some time in to explain the spread knotlost. Thank you for the in depth advice. Yes i have it beat into my head now that more rods isnt always the best. As a rookie capt. i thought the more more tods the better the chance of hookin up. But i over presented the area below deterring fish from the presentation. The more time i spead on here reading old forums and the answers from u guys and videos i watch im building up confidence for spring browns. Kills me to c a snow covered boat.
  21. I appreciate all the help guys. This site and you guys on it really helped a first time Lake Ontario fisherman put fish on the boat and hopefully more next year. I recently built two planer masts out of my old cannon hand riggers so my plan is to send the big boards out with 300 copper on the end of each board then a dipsy off each side and one rod off each rigger on back corners of boat and leaving the shoot open to land fish. That depends on lake conditions also.
  22. Yes, that was all i had to work with last year. 8 only on calm days but the occasional 8 rod tangled was a nightmare.
