Captain License......

I am in the market to do what I need to do to have my capt. license by next spring 2013! Thats my goal at least. My ? is, i see you can take the course online, for right around $600.00. Is that a good idea or am I better off trying to find an in person course local(If there are any)? And if so how much is it to do it that way approx? I was told it will be right around $2500.00 total when all said and done. So i am open to all suggestions that any Captains might want to share to make this as easy and cheap as possable BUT still achieving all knowledge and information I need to be a Captain!!

P.S I have already been logging my hours on the water.
