Yeah, Roger, when I’m fishing alone, I run short lead, but I’ve watched some videos guys are running really long leads from the Dipsy, and they need to hand line it into the net ?
-
-
AL! if you are fishing by yourself, you should stick with rigs without the dipsy. it will be a lot easier to net your catch. think about it.
-
How long of leader dose everybody run from Dipsy to flasher and from flasher to fly ?

Agreed there is no unnatural selection going on in natal streams so including a policy/procedure to only strip from three and four year olds based on body size at Altmar makes sense. We probably should be tagging these 12-14 lb fish to see if we can figure out which stream they were born from. The Niagara is an X factor that we don’t know about.

I take all my kids birthdays off and let them pick what they want to do for the day. Naturally, my son picked to go fishing on the lake for the day. I walked into his room at 5:40AM, and he was already out of bed ready to go. I feel like you just don’t see that out of most 3 year olds lol. Anyway, the king bite was very tough. Dropped in at 200 around 6:40 and worked to 400, then back into 90. Marked almost no bait. Only got 2 small kings and a brown. Then the fun began. Switched up to lakers, and it was non stop. Biggest was just under 20. When we had to come in at 2:15, he started crying because he wanted to stay out lol. I told him that I know how he feels 😂. Great day on the water and great memories made.

I'm pretty sur they do Glenn, and it's showed an increase in 2yr old's maturing over the years. What I can't wrap my head around......the fact they see no problem taking sperm from jacks at the hatchery "becasue it's sperm is more potent." No sh*t! Have you seen the MTV show teen mom . If you're concerned with impotent fish then take a little extra in the Fall to insure you meet quotas at stocking. However, the easy way out is to use a freak of nature. What do I know besides data showing shrinking salmon sizes year after year. Lets try to understand why the North shore gets the biggest fish in the lake year in and year out (proven by derby data). They have the best streams for natural reproduction on the lake, and that's proven without a doubt since most of these places HAVE NEVER BEEN STOCKED. Do you think a jack is gonna get to spawn with a 25-30lb female? Heck no! How about we start there?

Report 05/20 & 05/21.... Tough fishing right now.... Ran out to our Numbers from Sunday to find a ghost town .. I should have known better.... Went into shallower water and competed with the gigantic clouds of bait. Caught some cohos small kings and a couple steelhead. I've never had my fish finder screen be totally blocked out by bait clouds Yesterday we had a short day, so we fished the bait again. Super tough to compete with the real McCoy! Laker, cohos, and a 2 year old ... This is exactly why they call it fishing and not catching...stinger Black and Silvers on Freeslyders, DW super slims acid Rain, DW Superslims in magic Man were all producers the last two days. It's funny how it goes from rockem sockem robots to a total grind. But that's the Transition for you. Let's hope some stable weather comes in.

I recall looking at a bunch of data on naturalization last year and finding that the size of saltwater species introduced to freshwater generally declines as they adapt, through epigenetics or whatever transgenerational influence holds sway over growth rates. They also tend toward earlier reproductive maturity. I don't think this is limited to kings. And I don't think that there's anything fisheries managers can do to mitigate the process, even if they wanted, although I'd be the last one to say that data doesn't matter lol. Information is power, but sometimes the outcome is just in God's hands. So long as the fish are healthy and drags are screaming, I'm going to enjoy what we have.

You can find a lot of the data you are looking for in the annual DEC Lake Ontario Report. It is usually about a year behind because the data is still being collected and analyzed. Look for the “Population Characteristics of Pacific Salmonids Collected at the Salmon River Hatchery” section. It gives an overview of the size and age of chinook collected every year. https://dec.ny.gov/sites/default/files/2024-01/2022lakeontarioannualreport.pdf

Can you really load a rod with Scotty releases?
Great_Laker replied to BRsnow's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Yes, you can crank them down as hard as you want. There is also a tab you can pull out on the Scotty pinch pad that makes the tension even tighter. No problem- 1 reply
