Yet another question about sonar
Yankee Troller replied to dhhurlburt's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Is it CHIRP? What frequency are you running it on? -
It's been slow out there as of late, but you wouldn't know that if you fished on the Yankee Troller today! We started inside in 25-35' and had a heck of a morning fishing Brown Trout. Cannon Downriggers tracking bottom, divers out 50-60 on a 3 setting, 5 color cores behind Off Shore Tackle Company OR12 in-lines, and a 150' copper. We easily had our box in there, but this crew choose to toss all but 2 Brown Trout back. Hot BT spoons today were Wonderbread, Yellow Tail, Circus Freak, and Sea Sick Waddler. Even though the Salmon bite seemed slow talking with a handful of boats our clients made the decision to try for a Salmon around 10am. Off a tip from my buddy Jonathan Forder we ran out to 250-325' in front of Johnson's Creek. We didn't have a great picture on our Humminbird, but rods started to fly. A FishUSA Stealthcore 10 color pulling a Wonderbread took a few nice Salmon. A Warrior Spearmint took a nice Steelie on a 200' copper. Our Downriggers were firing with a Glow Watermelon, UV Beefeater, Spearmint, and Real Melon with Salmon and Steelhead. We also had a bite on a Familiar Bite Herring strip out 150' on a 2 setting, and an A-Tom-Mik Mfg. UV 190 behind a Team Dreamweaver paddle on the 300' copper. These two father and son teams left with a TON of smiles and great memories as well as a pile of Lake Ontario Trout and Salmon! Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Today was not a numbers day, but it was a day filled with quality. We started looking for Salmon this morning, but the Steelhead kept taking a spoon called Spearmint off our A-Tom-Mik Mfg. 200' copper. One of those Steelhead was 13lbs. We finally hit a teenage Salmon on our deepest Cannon Downrigger pulling a Familiar Bite Atlantic Herring strip, but we'd only muster up one Salmon bite this morning. The bite wasn't great for us, so we decided to head in and try for Brown Trout. We were rewarded with some great specimens! One tipped the scale at 14lbs, and another over 12lbs. They both took a Sea Sick Waddler spoons off our Cannon Downriggers. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Tony's rod and reel repair fixed mine a few years back. My board went in my Terrova.

Did you zoom in? When you plug in a Lakemaster chip you get a new menu. Look in there for a setting that allows you to get down to 1' contours.

I think we can drop the observers in the amateur division, but on the pro side there are too many things a team can cheat on. For example on Saturday the clock struck 2pm and we started to clear lines as fishing ended at 1:59:59. 2pm the diver takes a ride and it's a clear upgrade. We had to throw that fish back. There is no communication, 8 rod limit, creel limits, and a few more rules that having someone look after makes sense when thousands of dollars are on the line.

Congrats to team Dublin Up Sportfishing Charters for winning a tough tourney. They started day 2 in second place, and took advantage of a stumble by the team that was leading after day 1. We'd like to thank all of our sponsors. Narby's Superette & Tackle Black North Point Breeze FishUSA Team Dreamweaver Familiar Bite A-Tom-Mik Mfg. Hammerhead Cowbells Gambler Rigs It seems this event has become a "Pro" event over the years. Only 2 amateur teams fished it this year. We want to get the amateur teams involved becasue we feel this format benefits them. We have 4-5 great species in the lake to target, so fishing for them all (in my opinion) makes you a better fisherman. We were thinking about doing an amateur division and instead of 5 & 5, like the pros fish for, going to 3 salmon and 3 Trout for an amateur division. We'd like to hear your thoughts.

Stick with traditional sonar and you'll be fine. Humminbird HELIX Sonar/GPS units are a great bang for your buck. I find when people get all the other sonars/imaging that's available they spend more time fooling around with sonar than fishing.

I'm not sure about that.

Most events are at all time lows except for the Canadian event in the Spring. In that event the entry fee is very low. It's also a "near shore" tourney where smaller boats feel safer. That time of year the Walleye fishery is not open on Erie, so they pull some Lake Erie teams up. Tournament fishing is what upped our level over the years. Not going out of the same port or two every weekend. You can go to seminars all winter, read up on LOU, and scroll Facebook all you want for the hottest lures, techniques, and ports. Time on the water in a controlled time format against some of the best fisherman is what makes you better. The days where you go out and slam 40 fish and get your hero shots you learn nothing. The days you struggle and fine tune your spread is when you pick up on the subtleties that matter at times. These fantastic years of fishing we've had the last few years are making all of us dumb fisherman. It's too easy at times and you can put anything in the water and catch them.

Wilson Harbor Invitational: Tournament #2 is in the books and we got ourselves another check. Made a booming run to the East. Those new ACME propellers had the Yankee cruising at 27mph for about 22 miles. Found our water, got bit, but ultimately lost the ones we needed. It happens, but we had fun and ate great out on the water. We started in the skinny water with a spoon program. Team Dreamweaver Gold Sea Sick Waddler, Glow Green Alewife, Gold 42, and Carbon 14 all took fish on our Cannon Downriggers and wires. Our biggest fish inside came on 200' of A-Tom-Mik Mfg. copper pulling Familiar Bite Alewife strips. After we had our box we went looking for bigger fish. That's when we realized we done messed up! As we got out over 100' of water the 300' copper and deep riggers started firing with a better class of fish. We landed 2 of them and lost 7/8 others. All of those fish were eating the Familiar Bite Alewife strips. Congrats to our buddies on the Hideout team for the win. They shared the same water we fished today. We'd also like to thank the tournament committee for everything they do to get these events off without a hitch. May 19th: Another great day on Lake Ontario. These guys from Erie, PA came up and encountered their best day of Spring Salmon fishing ever. We started the morning inside probing the 35-45' level to see if there were any Salmon snooping around in there. That was a bust. We slid out and found 85-100' to work for us in the morning. After that bite slowed around 11am a good buddy from Dirty Goose Sportfishing called us out to 225' and we grabbed a couple more. We mainly worked between the microwave and the plant and put together a nice catch. Things that took fish today: > Familiar Bite on our deepest Cannon Downrigger and on a 300' A-Tom-Mik Mfg. copper. These took the majority of our fish > Team Dreamweaver Moon Crickets, UV Sea Sick Waddler, and Rodfather were spoons that went on our Downriggers. > UV Glow Green Alewife on an A-TOM-MIK 200' copper. > Marv's big fatty/A-TOM-MIK Ultra Green Glow out 150' on a wire diver. Don't tilt your transom mount ducer back. It should work just fine pointed straight down. If you have the right unit/transducer your low frequency should be about 45* cone angle. Without knowing what you have for a set up It's hard to diagnose your problem.

May 11: Tough morning for us. We had a short morning trip, and we wish we had a little longer to fish. All we could muster up were Lake Trout and a handful of Coho Salmon. Seemed like we found the right water at the end of trip, but didn't have time to work it long enough. Either way, these guys from Syracuse had a great time, and will be back next year. May 12: I guess all these Salmon wanted was a front to feast up before! What a difference a day makes. We had a stiff East wind all morning, but rods were popping! We worked out front of the harbor in 70-100' of water. We had Familiar Bite going on our Cannon Downriggers, but junk lines saved the day. We had a 5 & 10 color FishUSA Stealthcore going as well as a 300' A-Tom-Mik Mfg. copper. All three were pulling spoons. UV beefeater, UV Glow Green Alewife, and Wonderbread all took fish. We lost 6 Salmon, but these two guys from Maine left with their limit of Lake Trout and 4 Salmon. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Lake Ontario United mobile app
