Days don't get much better than today when you're Brown Trout fishing on Lake Ontario! Many Browns came to the net today, and we went 1/2 on King Salmon. We took our biggest Brown Trout of the season today at 12.5lbs and the Salmon we landed was 15lbs. These guys from West Virginia were floored by the fishery they were shown today! Once we had our share of Brown Trout in 10' of water we slid out to 15-30' of water and found a bigger class of Brown Trout. That was cool enough for me, but when we hooked two Salmon in that water we weren't leaving it! Today's program was Bay Rat Lures Short Shallows back 100' in Can't Afford It, My Secret, BT Candy, Ayu, Yankee Troller, Citric Shad, and Ridin Dirty. Our Fishing - Chinook Diver-Stainless Steel Troll Fishing Divers were going out 10-20' back with Mulloto, Yellow Tail, Glow Frog, and Green Shorts. Our Cannon downriggers took both King bites down 20-25' fishing a Sea Sick Waddler and a Green Shorts spoon fished 50' back. Genesee River Pen Project - Weekend Feeders Needed
Yankee Troller replied to Yankee Troller's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Thank you -
The Genesee Charter Boat Association is responsible for the Salmon/Steelhead pen project in Rochester. The fish are currently in the pens and we are in need of people to help feed them. We have weekdays covered for the most part, but we are in need of weekend volunteers. If you can help please contact Randy Calus @ 585-739-0569

Friday March 30th - Ran the Lund today. It was windy, cold, and bumpy but we had a decent day. One nice Brown Trout around 7/8lbs, but everything else was smaller. We kept four small ones, and let everything else go. Our port Fishing - Chinook Diver-Stainless Steel Troll Fishing Divers was the man today out 8' pulling a Team Dreamweaver Gold Sea Sick Waddler. Bay Rat Lures that went behind our Off Shore Tackle Company OR-12 in-line boards were My Secret and Yankee Troller. Saturday March 31st - Great first trip on the Yankee today. Al Kohut and boys were up from PA for their annual Brown Trout trip. We had a great pick all morning. Bay Rat Lures in Citric Shad, My Secret, Ayu, and Coho Crusher. Rogues that went were Firetiger and Log Perch. Most fish ate our surface baits. Only one fish on our Cannon downriggers and two fish on our Fishing - Chinook Diver-Stainless Steel Troll Fishing Divers. Team Dreamweaver SS's that went on those were Chilly Willy and a Gold Sea Sick Waddler. FishUSA | EGO Fishing - Designed for the Savvy Angler | McCoy Fishing Line | Daiwa Corporation - USA

They are a company out of Erie, PA. Everything about a Bay Rat is made in America. The best part about them is their durability. The other brands just don't last. They work, but they are made in China and break. As a consumer Bay Rat will also paint you a custom color with a very low minimum order (2).

You can go the route of two ducers, but then you're spending more money. I have the Mega on my Lund on the Starboard side. I cant have the main or kicker tilted all the way down, or I block the Port side. Trim up a little and it goes away. I get some great pics! If you follow me on Facebook you've seen some of my images.

They pulling Leadcore, Copper, or just mono lines for Brown Trout, Coho, and Steelhead?

Wrenched on them today! A nice class of fish to boot! All released to fight another day. These experienced trollers from Lake Huron just had to come experience Lake Ontario Spring Brown Trout, and today they got spoiled. Bay Rat Luresin Citric Shad, Coho Crusher, My Secret, and Yankee Troller were going 70-100' behind our Off Shore Tackle Company OR-12 in-line boards. Our Cannon downriggers were firing 40' back down 5' with Team DreamweaverSS's in Dirty White Boy and Silver/Green.

I'd say these folks from Harrisburg, PA were spoiled by the amazing Lake Ontario Spring Brown Trout fishery we have! They stood strong in the 1-3' waves battling fish after fish, and many times doubles. Water color was perfect and the waves gave our baits great action! The new Bay Rat Lures Citric Shad short shallow was amazing today! This is the water color I wanted it for when I asked them to paint it. Other colors that went were Firetiger, My Secret, and Coho Crusher. We fished them 70-100' behind our Off Shore Tackle Company OR-12 in-line planer boards. Our Fishing - Chinook Diver-Stainless Steel Troll Fishing Divers and Cannon Downriggers were going well with Team Dreamweaver SS's in Chilly Willy and Dirty White Boy.

What kind of fishing are you doing? In-line boards? Brown Trout fishing?

On the older Cannon Mag 10's we used to run 12lb weights all the time. Are you sure they are rated for 10lbs max? -

My problem stemmed from my customers walking off the dock with their limit of Chinook/Coho this past September. They were stopped at the end of the dock by a "new guy" and after he saw the fillets he came down to my boat looking for the carcasses. I told him I cleaned the fish on the Lake. He proceeded to tell me you can't do that. Walked to his truck to write me a ticket. I went over and explained to him I could provide a picture of every fish that went into those bags that had a time stamp on it. I also asked to see the regulation. In the regs it states you need to have Atlantic and Lake Trout carcasses to accompany the fillets. This is to allow a DEC officer to make sure "unders" aren't kept. My argument was these were Pacific Salmon and were not subject to those regs. I leave the skin on all my fillets, so they were identifiable. However, I chunked them up as 20+ lb Salmon fillets don't fit well in a 1gl zip-lock whole. I guess my other question is.....when can the separation of carcass and fillet happen? Can clients get stopped on the way home with just fillets and be ticketed? There is no clear answer.

I'd move your 40's over to your riggers, and put 30's on the divers. Add a little backing on a 30 and 1000' of of 30lb wire fits nicely. 40 has too much line capacity for a diver in my opinion. As far as the gear ratio the 30 is 6.1:1 and the 40 is 6.3:1. It's not THAT big of a difference. However, the 40 has a nice line capacity for when you need larger diameter lines for flea season.

I've had mixed emotions on the Mason stuff over the years. Sometimes the lead was hard to get out of the sheath, and I had some issues with it breaking. I loved the Suffix Leadcore, but it was so damn brightly colored. However, it was easy to work with, and I can't recall it ever breaking. Last 4-5 years I've been running Stealthcore (made by Woodstock and available at FishUSA) and it's been just as good as the Suffix core. However, it alternates red/black which are the first two colors to disappear in the water column. Does it matter? I don't know, but I'm happy with it.
