  1. Jim, The amount of blowback you get in the cable depends on the weight of the ball, the diameter of the cable, the speed of the boat and the direction/speed of the currents. There is no readily available table to tell you these things. The amount of bow in you fishing line also depends on same. If the amount of bow in your cable causes sleepless nights then next time you're trolling in 100 ft of water, let out 100 ft of cable. Then let out 105, then let out 110. (make sure you're over sand bottom) When you see you rigg'r" bounce" you'll know your touching bottom and the amount over 100 ft is what you're losing to blowback. You can also watch your line counter. Some guys fishing for Lakers will let out enough cable to bounce their rigg'r then crank it up a couple feet. That way they know their lure is on the bottom. The absolute best way to know where you ball is, is to adjust your transducer so you can see the ball on the screen. If you have a multi-frequency transducer, sometimes one freq will show it while the other won't. Tom B. (LongLine) Make sure you're over a sandy bottom when you try the above. I don't want you to snag up your rigg'r.
  2. Welcome to the site. You can't go wrong with Yank or off the hook. Tom B. (LongLine)
  3. Now that you have a probe use it to find where the water changes temp real quick. This is the thermocline. Put a lure below it, one in it and some above it. (54F is the temp of the thermocline) Let the fish tell you where they are. Your probe ball will not ride at the same depth as the other due to increased blowback. That's why they recommend running at least two lbs heavier on it. You can't eliminate that bow in your line. Put enough tension on the line so that you have a good bow in the rod when you're all set. Some guys bend it all the way over. When I put my lower rod down, I just loosen the drag a bit & let the ball take it down. The cheater is free on the main line, it will find it's own depth. Average speed is probably fine. Suggest you don't troll in a straight line with a mixed spread. I tend to run clean spoons a little faster. Tom B. (LongLine)
  4. Make sure you're not fishing below the fish. Also, sometimes it is possible to have too much glow. (regardless of what the tackle salesman says) Tom B. (LongLine)
  5. It's trial & error. Generally the closer you can go the deeper you are. Some guys never go more than 30 ft back when below 60 ft. I believe a lot depends on your spread. i.e some low, some high, some close, some back. Tom B. (LongLine)
  6. Keep an eye on the weather & go for it. Good luck. Tom B. (LongLine)
  7. ooops....14803.
  8. http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/GreatLakesViewerTable.shtml Chart 14813. Zoom in on area you want then do a “print screenâ€. Also look at next chart in series. Tom B. (LongLine)
  9. Longitude/Latitude. That's how far North they went. Rather that say how deep they went some guys give hints as to GPS coordinates. Can be different depths of water off different ports. Off the Genny, that's way the heck out there. Tom B. (LongLine)
  10. The big difference between Genny & Oak, etc is the distance you may have to go from shore. Also around the Genny there are some very "interesting" currents. Tom B. (LongLine)
  11. Welcome to the site. If you've already caught one, you must be doing something right. Fishing will pick up. In August a whole bunch will be coming you way. Tom B. (LongLine)
  12. That little gear on top of the starter needs a little grease now & then. If the truck battery acted the same when you jumped it. I'd strongly suspect a connection problem. Spit shine those connections with some fine sand paper; Tighten nuts with a wrench. But while you have the connections off look for corroded wires. Tom B. (LongLine)
  13. Welcome to the site Boom Boom. Tom B. (LongLine)
  14. BINGO! You're going to have to move out a little farther than before and try more "stealth" type approaches. i.e. leaders, dipsy's etc. Also be careful not to fish "under" the fish. Tom B. (LongLine)

  17. You don't NEED to change hooks. You should experiment & find out what's best for you and your boat by observation. After that you may WANT to change hooks...maybe you won't. For example: if you're doing 2.5 mph and put a BF in the water about 5-6ft beyond your tip, you'll see a certain amount of wobble. Now change the hook to single & go the same speed, you'll see a different wobble. It has to do with the weight of the hook and its water resistance/drag. Bottom line: you'll get the same wobble at a slower speed with the single. On the CON side, spoons with singles may spin out at 3 mph whereas with a treble, they may not. If you want the same wobble with the single at 2.5 mph as you have with the treble lure at 2.5 then you'll have to bend the spoon a little. How does your boat troll? Do you have the full 1/4 mph increment ability? Will you brain-hook a few small fish with a single? yes. Will trebles get caught in the net more frequently? yes. I've changed just about every spoon to singles except DWss which have stayed as trebles. I have a few BFs and the jury is still out on them. On a side note, this time of year is when the hard-jawed Kings are going to start showing up & personally, I want the penetrating power of the singles. Tom B. (LongLine)
  18. NYjason18 - Quite a few of them in the Genny. Try talking to Lenny down at the launch. (the sentry) Tom B. (LongLine)
  19. WTG Pete. Tom B. (LongLine)
  20. If the current is doing it then when you reverse direction, i.e go the other way, then the other two should cross. Sounds to me like a fin is bent causing the outside rigg'r ball to go towards the center. Tom B. (LongLine)
  21. WTG JD. Was great meeting you too. Tom B. (LongLine)
  22. Don't loose too much sleep over it. Any fish that is not released will not survive. Some chance is better than no chance. On my boat, even lampreys get released...albeit in at least three pieces. (Gobys in two) Tom B. (LongLine)
  23. Out at 5 this morn. NE wind. Heavy clouds. Off Russell in 75-120. 7 knock-offs & couldn't get to them in time. Felt like a golfer that couldn't hit anything straight. 50-55 ft down. Mostly NK wonderbreads. temp down around 65. Fleas are here! Some huge pods in 95 ft. Met J.D. at the launch. Great to meet ya J.D. Good luck on Monday. Lenny (security guard) said someone was pulling real nice walleye out of the river. Maybe 6 trailers in the lot. (Freeking pictures didn't even come out!) Oh well, next Saturday will be here soon enough. It will get better! Tom B. (LongLine)
  24. WTG Chris! I was also out early. Had 7 freeking knock-offs off Russell & couldn't get to any of them in time. Felt like a golfer that could only shank everything in the woods. At least I met J.D. at the launch. - Great guy. Tom B. (LongLine)
  25. Welcome to the site & welcome back. Tom B. (LongLine)
