Naples Creek, March 19th: DEC Region 8 Announces Naples Creek Rainbow Trout Sampling Annual, Free Event Scheduled for March 19, 2026 The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced the annual rainbow trout run sampling at Naples Creek, Ontario County, on March 19, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Sampling starts on State Route 245 bridge, 0.25 miles east of Route 21 junction in the Village of Naples. “Naples Creek and its tributaries are the primary source of naturally produced rainbow trout in Canandaigua Lake,” said DEC Region 8 Director Timothy P. Walsh, P.E., MPA. “Naples Creek’s role in the natural reproduction and population dynamics of rainbow trout makes it a vital part of the region’s fisheries management practices. This migration also provides an exciting fishery for anglers of all ages and abilities.” The annual rainbow trout sampling draws a large public audience. Spectators are encouraged to observe safely as they enjoy this educational experience. Naples Creek and its tributaries are popular for their spring runs of wild rainbow trout. DEC Region 8 Fisheries staff net rainbow trout, record each fish’s statistics, and release the fish back in the creek. The sampling results are made available to the public prior to the April 1 opening of Finger Lakes tributary season, which runs through December 31. The main bodies of the Finger Lakes are open to fishing year-round. DEC offers a host of resources for those interested in getting started in fishing. The I FISH NY Beginners' Guide to Freshwater Fishing (PDF) provides information on everything from rigging up a fishing rod, to identifying your catch and understanding fishing regulations. There’s also a video series on DEC’s YouTube channel that complements the Beginners’ Guide. DEC's Places to Fish webpages are a reliable source of information when planning your next fishing trip. DEC's official mobile app, HuntFishNY, now features “The Tackle Box,” which provides anglers with one-stop shopping for fishing regulations, boating access, and stocking information within a map-based interface from the convenience of your smart phone. The New York State Department of Health (DOH) provides advice to anglers about what fish are safe to eat and how often. Visit DOH’s website to search by waterbody location. https://dec.ny.gov/news/press-releases

I have yet to hear of anyone being arrested in Monroe County under the new "laws", not that it hasn't happened. I believe the stance from Sheriff Baxter is discretionary and "education."

They are supplied, and packaged. You could also try Doc's Tackle near Honeoye Lake, not sure if they carry FF supplies though. There is a guy who custom ties flies on Spring Street in Mumford if that is helpful.

Try Runnings in Canandaigua, I know Runnings in Brockport has a fair selection.

Opposite end of where we stay. Hope I didn't mislead, was referencing perch when I said never that deep. We still find them in 6' of water, just look around docks, weeds edges, etc. Walleye probably deep in the main channel this time of year, but will defer to Kevin Legg and other locals. Bass are plentiful, and smallies put up a great fight.
