  1. Like you said Bill, i'm also a bit bummed now that the boats out of the water. You're lucky,as you live fairly close to the lake compared to guys like me. I keep the boat in Olcott, but i live in Massachusetts, and have a six hour drive,so when i look out of my office window on a friday and see it dead calm,i envy the guys who can get to lake and get a few hours of fishing in. A few more years, and i'm planning on moving up that way. In the meantime,i'm rebuilding a 23' Seacraft, and it keeps me plenty busy,as it's a total restroration.I'll have plenty to do this winter.I also get to look at all the catalogs and dream. It will give me something to do picking out the electronics, radar, etc. for my project. As a bonus Cabela's is opening a new store about a half hour from my home,so i know where my my buddys and i can kill some time in the off season
  2. Do you still have the radar unit? Also,is it an LCD unit?, and is it blk-white,or color?
  3. Like Landing Zone,i also ordered parts direct from Daiwa. They shipped pretty fast, and if i remember correctly,i think they had a parts schematic breakdown for each reel on their site.
  4. Mike, the weather sucked, and the fishing sucked for the most part.we had one real good day when we did twenty steelies out in 520'.Only problem was that we had to navigate for an hour thru pea soup fog to get out there. Kind of scary without radar, especially when some freighters were lurking out that way,had to come back in in the same stuff,"yuk". Of course,on monday,i get a call from friends up in Olcott telling me that fishing took off right after we left for home, and heard from them again today saying that fishing is phenomonal, the lake set back up and that eveyone is catching kings and steelies. Go figure,oh well i'm done for the year now.I've got to get to work on my other boat restoration,so i can have it ready for late spring.
  5. I have a pair of 12 pound Black Shark Weights for sale. Excellent condition ***$35.00 or bro. for both plus shipping *** *****weights have been SOLD*****
  6. A friend of mine needs a water circulator pump for his AQ125 Volvo stern drive. It's a fresh water cooled 4cylinder. The cost for a new one is about $900.00, ("yep thats right 900 bucks). I didn't beleive it until i saw the price myself. If anyone has a line on the pump or even an engine that might be shot, but good for parts he'd appreciate hearing about it. Thanks all
  7. Ray,Yeah your right about them not being quite as knowledgeable about the lake, but it takes a while to get up to speed. Funny,i hear the same thing from my buddies," "tell us how you really feel" Maybe it's time for me to sign up for anger management classes. You should see the times on the water when i get pissed off, one of two things happen, the crew either starts laughing,or you can hear a pin drop. Lets see,i smashed and threw an Okuma blue diamond rod overboard, threw a spinning rod in the river while shad fishing, almost threw an eagle gps overboard, buried a treble hook in my hand when i got a little angry with a flasher/cut bait rig, etc, etc. Other than that,"I'M PERFECTLY NORMAL"
  8. I stop at Captains Cove on most every trip out to Olcott.I think they have a very good selection of everything needed for L.O. I stop at narbys, and they also have a decent selection but, and this is just my opinion,i seem to get more tips on whats currently working on the lake, and better tech info on equipment from Captains cove. They are extremely nice people to deal with.I also have dropped a few reels off to be repaired, and got great service. Have to agree with Blue waters,on Capts Cove, and especially his remarks about Dicks.I would make all my own tackle by hand, before i'd shop at Dicks. I live in Western Ma. which is a long way from any Muskie water, yet This Dicks store has an end cap display of 10" muskie lures. They also have a map of the hot spots for lake Erie. Virtually no one from this area fishes lake Erie, and unfortunately only a few like myself are die hard L.O.guys. Of course the Idiots at dicks, have all this stuff, but they don't have the common sense to stock the stuff that fishermen in the area actually need. I conveyed all the above, and much more in an email to them.Of course i got the typical psyco babble bulls--t reply, saying that they were sorry i wasn't able to find what i needed, yada, yada, yada. Dicks, give me a break these type of operations are all the same, they come into an area with all kinds of inventory, and give away prices, just long enough to put all the little guys out of business. Then they don't refill the shelves,or have the right stuff,so we're left with no well stocked tackle stores in the area. Well one thing is for sure,They sure named the place right.
  9. Mike,i'll take two of them. I sent you a PM with details Thanks
  10. Same as what Sybill wrote. Get yourself a fixed mount radio, you'll be much better off,and thay are pretty cheap today. They are very small and take up hardly any space,so you should be able to find room on your boat for it. If you don't have the space for an eight foot antenna, get the 36" stainless antenna with the coil.It receives and transmits over much greater distances than a handheld, and almost comes close to the range of an eight foot model. You can pick up a decent Vhf for around a hundred bucks,or even less if you shop around.Check out the bargin bins on sites like boaters world, west marine, cabelas etc. River marine in florida has a standard horizon quest for $99.00 it's a super radio for the money.www.rivermarinesupply.com. A good vhf is an important piece of safety equipment, and almost as important as a good life jacket. You also get the benefit of hearing fishin reports, and what others are getting fish on.
  11. We just returned from a five day trip to Olcott. The fishing was good, but not spectacular like it had been for the previous weeks. Most of our fish were steelies, and would say that in the four days,we probably had around forty or fifty on and boated 2/3 of them. We didn't get any huge ones, although a few were decent fish, between ten and twelve pounds. As for kings, our biggest was a fish around 18 pounds with the rest from 8 to 14 pounds.we caught around ten or twelve. Best producers were the wire dipsies with Spin Docs in white/blue,and E-Chips in green followed up with flies in the mirage, hammer, and double aqua patterns. Hot spoons were the NK kandy korn with the antifreeze green cup,and any spoon in antifreeze. Also hot was a green frog pattern with a white cup. Almost all our fish,(and everyone elses) were caught out deep from the 30 to 33 lines in 470 to 520 feet of water with the best rigger depth at 50' with free sliders on them taking the most fish.Dipsies were best at 100 to 150 feet back Overall it was a good trip, but nothing phenominal, we only took two pics the whole time. We kept waiting for that big steelie,as we were in the olcott derby which had a minimum weight for steelies at 15lbs. I spoke to them up there today and was told no one got a qualifying steelie.Thrillseeker's Vinnie P. got the winning king,a bit over 25lbs. Oh well, it was better than being at work or mowing the lawn. We'll be back in about three weeks, for eight days of fishing ,hope the big kings are in by then.
  12. Thanks a lot guys, i think i'll try a couple of them, hey,for 29.00 i figure it's worth it. If i don't like em, i'll use em back home for beating the bottom for lakers on a local resevoir.
  13. Does anyone use,or have any experience with the Shimano TDR Triton rigger rods? Fish Usa has them on sale and i was thinking about picking a couple up for spares.I was thinking about trying the 8'6" medium 12-20 lb model, and was wondering what action it has. Currently, i'm running Ugly sticks, and Okuma classics for my salmon rods, and Fenwicks for spring salmon. I really like the Ugly sticks, but i wish they had a bit more backbone like the Okumas do. I'd like to know if the Shimanos have too much or not enough backbone. If anyone has any info, on the Shimanos,i'd appreciate hearing about them . Thanks all
  14. I'm looking to buy an engine and a drive for a boat that i'm restoring. It has to be at least a 5.7 Mercruiser or Volvo, and be in excellent condition. The drive would also have to be in great shape. I'm looking at new complete packages, and may have to end up going that way,but would like to save a few bucks if i could buy a very good used setup. If anyone has one or even a boat that may be damaged, but with a good engine and drive,i'd be interested in hearing from you. Thanks all
  15. We fished The waters of Olcott, Wilson, and the Bar for four days, and had one of the most productive spring salmon trips since we've been fishing that area.(18 years). We also had a chance to meet a couple guys,(Erby Joe & fishfearme)who were a lot of fun to fish with. They were great guys and well informed. We were able to keep in touch with them during the trip and kept each other informed,as to what was working well. We fished the first day around the Olcott area, and did fairly well, but the action got better each day,as we headed toward Wilson and the Bar area. Monday and tuesday were absolutely phenomenal with at least 35 fish on monday, and twenty five to thirty on tuesday. We fished a bit further east of the can than Erby did,(3 miles),but the fishing was just as hot. Most of our kings were in the mid to high teens, with several of them over 16 pounds. Our best was a big fat king that was a bit over 26lbs, and a few others from 19 to 20lbs. Our biggest fish all came on flashers and flys.Echips and spin docs in white and mtn dew were hot, with flies in double aqua and hammer patterns being the best. As for the rest, just read Erbys report,it's a carbon copy of what we were using.I've included a few pics. 26.4 lb king 20lb king Olcott king Erby and pal John with doubles
  16. We fished out of Olcott for seven straight days, from 4/29-5/5.Fishing was pretty slow compared to last year, and we didn't boat a single king.We were not alone,as every other person we spoke to or heard on the radio, had the same results. We ended up with a catch of about fifty coho,in the three to five pound range, Two good browns at eight and eleven pounds.and at least ten pig lake trout, several over fifteen pounds. We fished east to the power plant, and west to around six mile creek, and everywhere in between.Virtually all the coho, with the exception of a few, where caught off the boards with stickbaits. Our best baits were white/orange, green/orange, and blues. we did good with the jointed F7 Rapalas, and 4" Berkely tormentor stick baits. Best water depths for the coho were with the boat in six to twelve feet, with the boards probably in four to fifteen feet. We did get quadruples on the riggers set at fourteen and nineteen feet with spoons in greens and orange colors. Both browns were caught with the boards almost on the beach, from between keg creek, and the power plant. The Lakers were caught off the riggers sixty down over approx eighty feet of water, with the stinger stingray,in the ludington pattern being the best producer.Best area, was off the power plant. We met and talked with lots of friends and a few capts. in Olcott, and the conversations were always the same,"where are the kings?". Even the guys on the bar were'nt getting any.Yeah, there were a few caught but it was not common. Water temps were very cold with temps inside of 41 to 43 deg.,and beleive it or not, from 34 to 39 deg. in fifty to two hundred depths. As other reports stated, the amount of trees, branches, buckets, bags, and other stuff in the water was unbeleivable. I had a plastic trash bag get wound around the prop on the kicker, and literally had to dodge whole trees and huge branches while trolling. Hopefully the temps will rise and the kings will show up for all of you fishing the LOC Derby, good luck to all of you.
  17. Over the years, i've owned lots of Lowrance and a few Eagle units.I had good luck with only Two of them. They were the Z7500 eagle, and the X70A Lowrance. They were good units, and did all that i expected. I gave up on Lowrance after i bought an X85,that they advertised everywhere as a dual frequency unit. It was dual frequency alright, but only if you bought the module for an additional hundred and fifty dollars. They seemed to have convienently left that part out,and if you bought that in addition to the fishfinder,it would have cost more than six hundred and fifty bucks. That would have put them in the price range of the Furunos at that time with no where near the quality. I had nothing but bad results with the X85 and lousy customer service. I wouldn't buy another lowrance product, even if it was half price.I ended up buying a Garmin dual freq.color unit, and couldn't be happier.IMO it's far superior to any comparably priced lowrance unit. I'm doing over another boat, and want something with a bit more power,so i've decided on the FCV-620 Furuno for the sonar, and a Garmin(great service) chartplotter for the Gps,no more Lowrance for me..
  18. It's almost back up as of 9:49pm .They were changing to a new server. If you go on now, you'll get to the home page but i guess they're still working on the message boards. According to their people,it should be up very soon.
  19. I run Tekotas for my wire dipsies, and have to say that they are awesome reels They have been absolutely flawless,in every aspect.I know that the early ones had a line creep problem, but that has since been fixed. It's too bad that you have a problem, but don't get frustrated,as Glen said the folks at Shimano are great to deal with. As mentioned,if you give em a call during business hours, they should be able to help you out right away, and get you going before the season gets into high gear.
  20. Yeah,it looks nice,The great feature of it is that it will give you all the lake surface temps, nice when your looking for the good temps to fish. It also gives the city forecasts, wave heights wave direction, storm cell tracking, and lots more, all in real time. I thought about it for my project boat, but i also would like Radar.Radar of course would show boats, pierheads etc,so what to do? Can't afford both,so it's going to be a tough decision.
  21. I found this article,on the wall of my dentists office many years ago. I thought it matched my feelings, and i'm sure many others feelings as well. It's from a book called Trout Magic by Robert Travers. It reads as follows. I fish because i love to: because i love the environs where trout are found, which are invaribly beautiful, and hate the environs where crowds of people are found, which are invaribly ugly;because of all the television commercials, cocktail parties, and assorted social posturing I thus escape;because in a world where most men seem to spend their lives doing things they hate,my fishing is at once an endless source of delight and an act of small rebellion, because trout do not lie or cheat and cannot be bought or bribed or impressed by power, but respond only to quietude and humility and endless patience;because i suspect that men are going along this way for the last time, and i for one don't want to miss the trip;because mercifully there are not telephones on trout waters;because only in the woods can i find solitude without loneliness;because whiskey out of an old tin cup always tastes betterout there, because maybe one day i'll catch a mermaid; AND FINALLY, NOT BECAUSE I REGARD FISHING AS BEING SO TERRIBLY IMPORTANT BUT BECAUSE I SUSPECT THAT SO MANY OF THE OTHER CONCERNS OF MEN ARE EQUALLY UNIMPORTANT-AND NOT NEARLY SO MUCH FUN.
  22. Here's a stuoid but funny fish song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MR71If6Zbvg
  23. Looks like the glangler site is back up and running.
  24. On monday,Dave Mull said the webmasters were still working on it.Hopefully,,it will be back soon.
  25. Jerry, the original owner was a friend of mine, and the boat was named OL' Jammer. The last guy was from Pa.,and he named the boat Snakebit. It's a 23' Seacraft,it was always used in Olcott, and I will also be keeping it there,as thats where my present boat is kept.Original owners name was Pete Lecerf
