  1. I ran Canons for more than twenty five years, and still have them on my Trophy. They were and still are a great rigger. However,I had the chance to use Scottys last year on a friends boat, and liked them so much, that i bought four of them for my new boat. I like the tilt up boom feature, and also like the way the boom telescopes.
  2. Ditto that Seasquirrel, There is nothing funny about this scenario, and if it happens,I'm not going to listen to any whinning from people who put him in office, when their guns are taken away,or made impossible to own, because of unaffordable license fees. If that crowd controls things,it "WILL" happen. Be careful of what you wish for,it can turn around to bite you in the a-ss.
  3. There are several for sale on this site. www.lboa.net go to where it says trading dock.
  4. A friend of mine just sold his 26' Lyman Cruisette hardtop.I was amazed how much these old Lyman boats sell for.He got $25,000.00 for it.Perfect condition with all kinds of goodies. He has a friend who specializes in Lymans, and restorations of them.I'll check and see if he has anything like ypu're looking for. You are looking for a wooden one i imagine?
  5. I tie all my own flies, and use a 3/16 od tubing. The inside diameter is large enough to pass a loop knot of 50lb mono through it. This way, I only have to change fly skirts, when i want to make a color change.I just slide off the skirt, and slide another color on.Also,i tie up five or six leaders with different color beads,so that i can change bead colors when ever i want, very easily. By doing this,i can keep all my flies in a single Plano box.I try to keep about six of each of ten or twelve different patterns on hand, although in reality,my buddy and I probably have more than five hundred flies on board.Of course, many are experimental patterns, that we never seem to use. Here's a picture of a plano box with some of my flies in it,that i gave to a friend for a gift. Some of these have hooks on them, but i only store the skirts in my own box's.I keep them the same way for myself, but without the leaders, only the skirts,so i can fit more of each, and a few more colors,in the same box..
  6. I also keep my boat stored at the Boat Doctors in Olcott. His shrink wrap rates and storage rates are good, and he lives there,so the boats are pretty safe from vandals. Give him a call, his name is Jim. His telephone is #716-778-8592.Make sure to Tell him crusher sent you, that will be good for a laugh. I'd make the arrangements with him now,as after the season,he's not always available by phone.
  7. Fished eight days out of Olcott, and have to say that unfortunately,(for us) we didn't do very well on kings. The Steelhead were much more cooperative, thank god.We fished from Olcott, east to the power plant, and west to Wilson, and from 40' out to 450' of water. We boated a lot of steelies the biggest around 10lbs,and most of the rest between 6-8 pounds. Most of our fish came on the riggers down about 50'-60' over 250 to 420 feet of water. The last day(sat.8/23)was our best.We started in close 40' and marked lots of fish.We managed to pick up a nice 9lb brown, but no salmon,so we edged out deeper, and had a slow but steady pick of steelies. We trolled a circular pattern, north and south in and out from 175' to 225'. Most of the fish came off the riggers on spoons in greens and yellows. Our wire divers were very slow, accounting only for a few fish on Spin Docs and flies in the Hammer, and mirage patterns, pretty odd,as they are usually smokin hot. I have to say that we were humbled by our poor salmon catch. We worked hard for every fish we caught. It was no go for a boat ride trip,we tried every color spoon and fly, along with constant pattern changes on the riggers, cores and wire. With a few exceptions,it seemed slow for lots of boats during the week. The chatter on the radio was mostly negative. I spoke to a DEC guy at the cleaning station, and he told me that the salmon catch was down quite a bit this year.He said the last three years were record years for the salmon catch. Oh well,it was good to be back on the boat on the lake, and to spend some time with lots of good friends in Olcott. Now it's back home, and back to work on the new boat to get it ready for next spring. Good luck to all you guys fishing the last week of the derby, and into september.
  8. My opinion, for what it's worth is to buy yourself some 13lb Torpedo weights. After lots of tangles with pancacke weights,i switched to the torpedos, and have'nt had a single problem. Been running them for about five years, and love them, they track perfectly, and are very reasonably priced. You can get them from Tom at Atomik. He ships them quick and inexpensively.
  9. We'll be at Olcott from 8/15 to 8/24,and will fish(hopefully)the first eight days of the derby. We're docked at Olcott, but will fish from the power plant to Wilson, and the bar.We fish this same nine days every august, and always enter the derby, but don't take it too seriously. I just like getting away from the rat race and up to the lake, for the fishing and good friends.
  10. Before i moved my boat to Olcott many years ago,we kept it at the old Frost haven resort(Anchor Resort) in Fairhaven. As billy said,Fairhaven is a nice place, and you can fish the bay if the lake is rough. Also a nice tackle shop close by. Having said that,if you want a place to get away from the crowds with good fishing, and solitude and spectacular scenery,I'd recommend the Adirondacks/Lake Champlain area. The Willsboro NY side of lake champlain is very nice.Willsboro bay offers good salmon and lake trout fishing, and is usually fishable. The scenery on lake Champlain is beautiful, with the Adirondacks on the west, and the green mountains on the east. You can take a ride up towards Plattsburg and check out the Ausable river and Gorge. You can also fish many small lakes and ponds if you prefer small water. Wildlife is abundant and easy to see,and you are only surronded by woods and water. No ugly industrial stuff,or annoying tourists and shopping malls. I kept my boat on Champlain for a few years,The salmon and trout fishing was great then. They had and still have a Lamprey problem, but i hear they are now treating the rivers again. All i know,is that if there were kings and coho in that lake,I'd be back in a heartbeat
  11. Nah,you're perfectly normal stop worrying.I have three boats, and at least 35 rod and reel setups, and of course all the rest of the stuff I'm addicted to. Course,my ex wife thought differently, she didn't agree.hey I'M PERFECTLY NORMAL,she's the nut.
  12. My apologies if we're not suppose to talk politics. Please delete my post if you need too.
  13. That IS! good news, and it's nice to see that barbara boxer actually did something right for once. Wait till the lefties and earth nuts get in power, you won't be able to run your boat. They don't want fossil fuel,no oil, no coal, they definitely don't want nuclear, and forget drilling anywhere on earth, because it might hurt the toenails on a three toed sloth. They want wind power, and solar power, but not where they live, because it might obscure their precious view from Marthas vineyard and Nantucket. Better get a pair of underwear with a catalytic converter in them, because any methane you expel must be minimized,so you don't contribute to global warming. Your new boat should be a hardtop, because you'll need it to mount the solar panels, and wind turbine on,so that you can still use it. Given enough power, these nuts would outlaw all fossil fuels. After all, their chief nut,Al Gore wants all power plants in ten years to stop using fossil fuel, except him of course,he'll still be flying on a plane and chauffered around in his Escalade. What does this idiot think power plants will use to generate electricity with?,Ten years is a blink of an eye,and no where near long enough to completely replace fossil fuels. A giant cork stuffed in this blowhards mouth would be of more help. Hey, i got an idea, maybe all these nuts could have a mass suicide of themselves,it would result in a lot less hot air being expelled.,lowering the risk of global warming, and it would give the polar bears a fighting chance, because after all, they place animal and human life on par with each other. C'mon you know that you're no better than a spotted salamander.
  14. I've also bought my coated wire from Stamina, and they always have been slow with their shipping from my experience. It was frustrating, but i dealt with it ok,as it was the winter months, and i wasn't in a rush. I also had to call them on a few occasions, and although they were polite,i got the feeling that they really didn't care all that much. I try not to use them if possible, and try to buy as much as possible from local shops. A while back, i had a similar problem with Cabelas.I ordered some stuff by express 2-3 day air, because i was leaving for a week of fishing, and needed it by Friday. Well, three days went by,and it didn't show up,so i made a call to Cabelas, and explained my problem to the customer service person. I told her that i paid extra to have it sent 2nd day air,and that i didn't get it as promised by them. So the answer i got from this airhead was,"sir,it's not guaranteed. I couldn't believe it, i had to explain to her that,"hello, earth to Cabelas, your catalog clearly states guaranteed express 2-3 days. She then says to me,"well it's not 100 percent. Hell this whole thing was like a Seinfeld episode.I finally had to get a supervisor to refund all my money plus shipping.I don't buy much from them anymore. They built a new Cabelas store 1/2 hour from my house, made one trip to it,and while they have lots of stuff,i wasn't that impressed.I have more great lakes tackle in my junk drawer than they do in that store.
  15. As others said, wire, wire and more wire. We keep the boat, and fish out of Olcott, and most of the times wire is our hottest rods. Put 1000 yards of straight 30lb wire on a Tekota,or Daiwa line counter, and you're good to go.We run malin, and even wire from Mcmaster Carr, and both produce well. Also, don't overlook leadcore,we run it off our big boards all season, and it accounts for a lot of nice kings.Plus it's nice to give a rookie the leadcore when a big fish is on it.It builds up their muscles.(LOL). Our best wire dipsy setups have been the big dipsy with a ring set on 2-1/2. Our best line lengths have been 140 to 225 back. Best flashers have been E-Chips and Spin Docs in Mountain dew,Green, and white.Greens with the glow tape were best, and white works good with the sun up high. Although we tie our own flies, our best patterns have been colors like Atommiks Hammer,Mirage,Little boy blue,#96 and greens. Double aqua is also a hot producer,my buddy runs it 98 percent of the time. We mostly run spoons off the leadcore, and have boated nice kings in july and august with ten colors out,and also with five colors with 2 to 4 oz weights hooked on the core with a rubber band. Olcott's a great port to fish out of,the people are great, and the fshing is usually super.have a good trip
  16. Noaa weather, their usually wrong. They should change their name to. I Don't Noaa weather
  17. Thanks Greg, yeah,I'm pretty familiar with ethanol and it's problems, but i wasn't sure if New York has it in their fuel(i assume it does),but in my state of Mass,it's required to be posted,(as it is) on the pumps. I don't see it on the pumps in New York,so i wasn't sure.I know that some states have only recently switched to ethanol as an additive.
  18. Ok,I should know this,as I've been fishing, and keeping my boat in Olcott for twenty years, but i have to admit, that i don't. Does New York have Ethanol in their gas?,and is it required to be stated as such,on the pumps? I ask, because i don't see it on the pumps at gas stations,or at the marina fuel docks. I always fuel up at the Olcott/Newfane Marina fuel dock,as it's the same price as in town gas stations, and is more convienient. Does anyone know if it's a federal law,or a state law requiring gas pumps to be labeled, stating the percentage of ethanol?
  19. No Ray we're not doing the pro ams, although I''d like to one of these times.Maybe next year, when i finish my project boat. It's a better roomier platform to fish out of. Try that squid thing in the fly,it worked great for me.
  20. We arrived at Olcott on wed.5/21,got the boat ready and in the slip Thursday,we got up at 4:30 am to a wonderful 20 mph wind out of the west/northwest,making the lake unfishable.Good old lake Ontario.we spent the day buying more tackle, taping spoons, and drinking beer. Friday morning,we woke up to the same wind,so we went to breakfast with Erin and John(Erby Joe)and talked fishing. It seemed like the wind was dying down a bit,so we decided to head out on the lake. It was a bit lumpy at first, but it kept getting better,as the day progressed. Our first fish came about a half hour after we set up,and continued to be a steady pick all day. We had at least thirty fish on,and boated around twenty five of them.Four were over twenty pounds(22.5 lbs. biggest),several in the low teens, and a handful of runts. The rigger fish came mostly between 40 to 60 feet down, over 70 to 90 feet of water. Wire dipsies were hot with set backs of 160 to 175 feet on a 2-1/2 setting. Best rigger spoons, were 28 size in greens like frogs, nbk's ,die hards, ludingtons etc. Best dipsy set up was white Spin Docs and E-Chip flashers with flies. The best fly was a mirage fly with a glow white squid inside of it.I slid the squid on the leader, over the beads, and the fly skirt over the squid. This was featured in Great Lakes Angler magazine. My buddy did good with the double aqua fly. Saturday was a repeat of friday.we caught as many fish, but the size was smaller,we got one that was 21 lbs,but most were between ten to fourteen pounds. The riggers were better producers than the dipsies that day,but the biggest fish was on a wire dipsey. I think this was the first time, that every rod fired equally, they all took fish, and we had a ball. One of my best spoons was one that i painted, that my buddy named the Drunkin Scotchman. It took around twenty kings. Sunday was glass flat, and another super day,but not very many big fish, most were in the ten pound range, and a bunch in the six to eight lb range. My buddy did lose a screamer, that hit a rigger spoon, and wrapped itself around the wire three or four times. He also lost a big steelie that made several jumps and finally spit the spoon back at our heads when he put the pressure on him.Same depths and colors as the previous days, but the dipsies were not as productive. Overall this was a great trip, and one of the first when every rod was hot. Most times we have at least one rod that is slower than others, but this trip every rod took lots of fish. PS. all our fish came from in front of the Olcott pierheads, east to a bit past the somerset power plant. _Here's a pic of the Drunkin Scotchman spoon i painted ________________ one can never own too many boats or too much tackle. 21. YUK!!!!! We fished from, Olcott to the Bar,from 5/1 to 5/9,and we sucked at it.The weather left a lot to be desired, and the fishing was tough. We got out every day,but a few of them were only for a couple of hours because of the good old northeast wind. We fished mostly in the Wilson and eastern edge of the bar areas, but also in the Olcott area for a couple of the days.We had to work for every fish.We ended up with about twenty kings for the week, twelve of them were in the low teens, and the rest were runts. Also picked up a few small Coho and a couple of lakers in the low teens. Almost all were rigger fish, the wire rods were pretty much dead, producing only a couple fish, and our lead core never fired at all. Water temps were in the low to mid forties on the surface and the same down below. There were a few guys who did good, but overall, the chatter on the radio, wasn't all that encouraging. Oh well,we'll be back for a week at the end of may, hope it's better at that time. Good luck to all of you guys out there.
  22. We'll be on the water from Thursday 5/1 to Thursday 5/8.Dock #39 at Olcott 2160 Trophy hardtop named Reel Easy.Stop by and say hi.
  23. Shade, I also fish out of Olcott,we'll be up there 5/1 to 5/9,and back up from 5/21 to 5/26. We'll be at dock #39 it's a 2160 Trophy hartop named Reel Easy.Give us a shout on the radio,or stop by the dock and say hi. My radio is always on scan,68,10,11,72,9,and a few others. We answer to Reel Easy or Big Easy.
  24. I'm kind of undecided on this.On one hand,i would like to see more attention paid to our style of fishing, and the competition is good, but on the other hand,i don't miss the crowds, long lines, and hard to get slips at the marinas. Most of my fishing is non derby fishing,(we enter the LOC's only),so it's not all that important to me.It would be a good shot in the arm to people who make a living from fishing related activities around the lake,so that would be a very good thing. Not to mention,it would be nice to see some salmon fishing great lakes style on television, instead of the constant Bass fishing shows,or the even more disgusting yuppies on that offshore adventures show.Jesus, how much of that can you take.
