  1. Here's a hunting story.... No short version... For the last 10 days I've been down at a buddy's camp.... Been pretty slow... Saw a bunch of small bucks but nothing crazy.... Very few Does as they were herded up on the other side of the property... Passed on 4 bucks yesterday and one early this AM. About 815 a decent 8 walked by me super close ( I had my eyes closed so he didn't look into my soul..... He was that close). As he got by me into a thicket, I took the shot... Admittingly it was a really bad shot. Buck hunched up... Wobbled then layed down.. 30 minutes of him laying in thicket not moving, I slowly club down. As I get to the bottom rung of my stand, I hear 3 crashes in the thicket... Dang it hes still alive!.... I knew he was in trouble, so I snuck back to camp... Paced the carpets, called some lifelines to talk me off the ledge and waited for friends to get back for assistance... About 3 hrs later, we started the track... No blood! WTF! Found a fresh bed in snow... Then followed fresh tracks... There he is! Sitting up looking at me! As he was going to stand up I Raised up the .44 mag and let him have it. First shot was a deflection off a branch. Bullet went into him in front of back leg, traveled forward and got the gut and liver. What a week long adventure... Huge thanks to the Johnson Family for having me back down this year. Great friends... Lots of laughs... Getting a deer is a bonus Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  4. There is no way in hell you can take any angler hours for 2017, 2019, and 2020. As " Data"... High water in 2017, and 2019 kept many ramps closed and many people off the lakes ... Marinas were flooded... ECT... Now look at this year... China Virus... Charter Industry took a big hit.. Many many people cancelling from out of town due to our Governor's quarantine orders. On top Of all of that, I had cancellations due to out of town guests not feeling safe in Rochester due to the Riots... Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  5. Dang...... As bad as you think it was, everyone is OK.. Someone was watching out for you.... Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  6. Had a young man and his family on the MissD this weekend. He has restored my faith in today's youth. According to his mom, Paul has been up to his eyeballs in YouTube videos on fishing. Paul helped me put rods out, picked out rigs... Watched intently while I trimmed cut bait and rigged. As we trolled some fertile waters off Rochester, Paul told me he wanted to catch a Steelhead and a King. Not a challenge I took lightly... Especially from a 9 year old kid. At the end of the day... As the family walked off the dock, I heard Paul ask his mother " We are coming back out with Capt Matt Again next year ..Right?" The smiles from young kids who just caught the biggest fish of their lives never gets old .... Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  9. For the past 30 years I've been going on a trip to God's Country with my buddies. Same 5 guys +/- a few others, but in the last 10 years Its been the same 5 guys.targets are Northerns, Perch, panfish, and Walleyes. This year the weather was perfect! Lots of big perch... Incidental Bass hook ups, a few Northerns and finally a walleye. Water temps were a bit cooler so the weed beds we normally cast to were not grown up. The Northerns we did get were good ones with the biggest being a conservative 42inches and 17lbs ( Released). Fish hit a casted Gold Sammy Pac spoon... Great essox bait. I got a solid tip from another Captain regarding Walleyes. Trolled exactly where he told me with the exact baits and application... Grabbed a good one right away and then got blown off with heavy west winds and storms. Had an interesting encounter with a lady. We were working down a bay casting cubby jigs with floats for pan fish... Lady came out and asked what we were fishing for. I replied pan fish.. Perch, Rock bass, Sunnies... She started calling us poachers and was going to call the DEC because Bass were illegal. I tore into her that we were using ultra light gear with panfish bait. That we were not targeting Smallmouth Bass or Largemouth. Funny how stupid people can be... We ran into several other cottage owners who were very nice and even went as far to say they were happy to see people out fishing and enjoying the lake. SMH... Overall the best trip up north in 30 years... If more people fished and turned off the TV, this world would be a better place.... Tight lines! Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  12. Today the Rochester Fleet said goodbye to Captain Joe Toomey. It was a sight to see 20 rigs rolling out of the Genny under Sheriff's office escort. I want to thank everyone who came out and thank you to the Monroe County Sheriff's office. The day was perfect and I think we got Joe's Attention...Thanks for the pics Jeremy Goodison! ...... 15. Well my theory is I run them 10-20 ft behind the ball... Closer to the boat, more action they get... If you were inclined to run other brands of spoons with optimizers, you could run them on divers, or junk lines... Farther from the boat at faster speeds the slower the action is... Optimizers are very similar to old school NKs. They have awesome action in rolling conditions... If you look at those pictures, that day we pounded steelhead it was blowing 20-25 out of the South... We were offshore and it was sloppy... Had to troll with them....pick the gear up...run back into the waves , then set up and troll with em... Sustained 4fts with a 6 every couple minutes... Just some hints about changing things up and thinking outside the box.... Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  16. Fish... Tamiron was Jim's site... optimizers and Honeybees ( also a great steelhead spoon) . Jim sold the Optimizer spoon business to Stan Kulak of Shasta California. Stan owns Trinidad tackle. It's funny how these staples of Lake Ontario fishing that I used to use back in the 80s still produce even after all the changes the lake has had. Will other spoons work?Absolutely, but having some of these speed demons can add just a little different spin on your spread. Especially in the near future when the lake transition starts and we are offshore targeting buckeyes. Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  17. Optimizers work best 3.0+ mph... I run Mostly the #3 size. Kings chomp them nicely in the spring. Out offshore last year, there was some very green water. I threw out some variation of black silvers and the steelhead chewed em up.. I'm a spoon guy... I have confidence with spoons. If I have optimizers out... I put them on all my riggers.. 3.0-3.4 mph is faster than most people normally troll, but you can cover some distance to find active fish. Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  18. Optimizer spoons were initially made in Rochester by Jim Martino. Optimizer was purchased a few years by by Trinidad Tackle out of California. Many old timers remember how great these spoons were at higher speeds and you can cover some water plus they are great in rough water. Over the last few years I've been giving them some playing time. The fish see the same spoons trolled by them day after day, so I've been going a bit different. I just received come custom paint jobs from Trinidad Tackle today... Lake Ontario proven patterns. Tight lines peoples. Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  19. Like I said...im OCD... If the lead breaks and pokes through the sheath, I feel the rig is comprimised. I've had the lead core break off on a big king before... It wasn't the #15 leader... So at some point the core was damaged... I change out my cores every 3 years... Mono sooner... Yup I'm a worrier when it comes to tackle. If my gear fails and a customer played the fish right...its on me.. If they loose the fish because they played it like a jamoke, it's on them...lol Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  20. Just did a below deck restoration on my 313... New Black locust Stringers.. ZF Hurth Transmissions, and two new 383 Stroker Motors... Great boat. She has gotten me home safe in some God awful waves.. I owned and operated a 1989 Baha Cruisers 280 Sport Fisherman (same boat as the weekender except less cabin & more deck). Here are my thoughts: -Make sure the stringers and transom are in good condition (mine had been replaced in 2014) Cons -I had Ford 302s in mine, wished I had 350s -Very seaworthy boats, though mine didn't love to run a following sea -Can be top heavy, not much fun fishing the ditch -Wished mine had in-deck fish boxes (some do have them) Pros -Very fishable boats, there is a reason there are so many of them on Ontario -Very safe, high gunwales -Never had any mechanical or structural issues. Before you buy any boat, MAKE SURE YOU GET IT SURVEYED and SEA TRIALED! Good luck Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  23. I never clip lead core into the release... I let it all out.. The release will eventually damage the lead , break it and weaken the whole set up.. The only way you might be ok is a pinch pad or rubber band. I'm way to OCD also... I have line counters on every reel and know exactly how far past the knot I let it out... Details matter in my opinion. Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  24. Those Atlantic's are delish! Caught one earlier this month... Butter, lemon pepper, little garlic, wrap in aluminum foil, on the grill... Muy Bueno! My teenager even liked it. Great fish brother! Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  25. Absolutely.... Short cores I use 20# mono for backing... My set ups for short cores are pretty simple... Starboard side...both 3 colors.... Port both 5 colors.. Run the lead till knot gets in the water..let it out a pass or two on the reel... For releases I use Amish Clippers releases... 10 color cores I use power pro backer. I think power pro slips a little out of Clippers, so I let the 10 out similar to short cores ( knot in water + 2 passes) but I will use a rubber band or two... Half hitch them around the power pro and snap them into the release.... You can also use Scotty pinch pads as well. I use them for my copper set ups.
