  1. LongLine, An awesome letter. Very well written and researched . I am glad we have you on our side!!
  2. Thanks Ray, that was my second idea I have a couple of 9' dipsey rods that I run braided line on. I think I will switch one over to wire . I can use it for both wire dipsey and thumper duty.
  3. Din't forget the "secondary" proposal for power transmisssion . There is a proposal on the table to run submarine cables between Galoo and Nine Mile Point. All this attention to the overland lines might be used to draw attention from this part of the proposal. I think lines run along the lake floor right through prime fishing territory would be a huge mistake. Bottom fishing for Lake Trout would be a thing of the past . And there are , I'm sure, other valid reasons not to run these lines.
  4. I am in the market for a new wire line rod with roller guides. I have a starfire now that i am not happy with . The line tends to jump out of the groove in the tip roller and makes it impossible to reel . Any one have any favorites ? And where can i buy it ? The Watertown Gander Mountain has one i like , but is is $100 and I hate to spend that much on a rod that is used only once in a while. Thanks for any help. Mark
  5. I just came accross an article from the local Plattsburgh , NY news. The NY state court of appeals has rejected a move by the local neighborhood group to block a wind permit. The local laws prohibit the building of wind projects in residential areas , but the judge has approved the issuing of the permit while admitting it is illegal. Penn energy ( I believe the same company responsible for the plans on LO ) said their team remains prepared to oppose "frivolous actions" brought by neighborhood groups. It appears this company has a huge legal team to fight us. The article can be read at http://www.pressrepublican.com , click on news at the top of the page and scroll down to article. Any one able to attend the meeting in Pulaski at 10 AM , please post the results so we can all keep up with developments. Here's the direct link as-well: http://www.pressrepublican.com/0100_new ... 32654.html
  6. Things have gotten ominously quiet. The last I have heard is the plan has been sent back to Jefferson County to hash out the PILOT agreement (after the Town of Hounsfield approved the site plan clearing the way for the pilot) . I have been going to the www.preservethegoldencrescent.com website daily to keep up with events. They have the sites proposed for turbines on Galoo and the site plan for transmission lines on their website and what I have seen is very disturbing. They also have a petition to Jefferson County opposing the project , please visit and sign . It seems that NY power authority and the downstate developer have gone to ground and are keeping things quiet. The Galoo project is slated to start this summer and the rest of the project within 2 years.
  7. It's true. The Town of Hounsfield approved the site project for Galoo Island. The board said thre was no opposition from the residents of the Town of Hounsfield, only from outsiders. Sounds like BS to me. This whole deal stinks, there is money changing hands somewhere along the line. The preserve the golden crescent website has been putting the word out on this for some time. That there was no opposition is totally false. I personally called the phone # supplied and voiced my opposition , and I am willing to bet there were hundreds of like calls. This is the start of the huge wind farm in Mexico Bay . The Galoo project will need power lines and they are ready to use emminent domain to get the property they need to run these lines. The request for the transmission lines asks for carrying capacity four times what the Galoo project will produce. What does that tell us ?I think we may be fighting a losing battle.
  8. The "close the barn door after the horse is already out" mentality needs to go . VHS is here and will be forever. The fish need to build up an immunity to it, just like we humans and the "Svine flu" . Tom, there has not been a decent replacement to your cut bait since you discontinued it's distribution in the US. I hope that sometime in the (near) future you will be able to supply your product in the US . I can only wish and hope. By the way , Tom , what will you take for the 5 pacs in the pic ?
  9. longline, That is a great letter. I hope it gets published. I think we are in for a long hard battle with the NYSPA , the push for green energy is gaining momentum and there will be a lot of misinformation published to get this travesty pushed into law. Politicians from the Gov on down are getting behind this rush for alternative energy. We may have to put our money where our mouths are ,and hire lawyers to fight our battle.
  10. Here is a link to a website that is advertising heavily in the Watertown area ,on both TV and radio and printed media. I think that these are the people we need to get behind and support in every way possible. They seem to have a handle and an eye on this proposal. http://www.preservethegoldencrescent.com
  11. This is very much a Homeland Security issue. If Abdul blows up a turbine , some poor person in Southhampton may have to go a whole afternoon with NO ac. Now that is a disaster! On a serious note , I belive they will have an exclusion zone to minimize the power authority's liability if someone gets hurt . Imagine someone snagging a cable with their anchor . That could make for a bad afternoon. This whole proposal is ill conceived . There is too much to lose on the great lakes to gamble with this kind of disaster in the making. Maybe the idea is to make the lake less valuable to the people that have cottages and businesses in the area, that way ,when they want to sell water to the people of CA there will be less oposition to that proposal . Not to mention the pressure to have ships discharge clean water from their ballast tanks will dissapear. Who will care ? Any politician that supports off shore wimd farms on the Great Lakes has lost my vote. Period.
  12. Hey Yankee Troller why you buying paddles ? Don't you have an engine on your boat ?
  13. I think we are onto something. Maybe we can train them to jump on command. How do you say "PULL !" in chinese ?
  14. The proposal asks for 560 wind turbines in Mexico Bay alone !! With the push on for "green" energy , I am not sure that this proposal will be killed by eliminating the current administration . We will most definitely have a fight on our hands in the future. This is all about money and the sportsmen (and women) will take a back seat.
  15. Underware ? What's underware ?
  16. Here is a little something we better keep an eye on. If this proposal goes through we may find that these "terrorist ' targets will be protected by exclusion bouys , just like the nukes . I guess that would put many square miles of prime fishing water off limits. http://www.bewarenywind.blogspot.com
  17. As this is a NY Stae law , it is my understanding that the CG is not responsible for enforcing it. The enforcement falls to the DEC and the troopers and sherriff . I was stopped for a safety check by the CG once, when I got to the distress flag ( NY requirement) the coastie said that was not one of the items they inspect or require.
  18. Maybe your inflatable friend can be counted as a pfd. I wonder if you have to be wearing her (or him ) for it to count ? And on the front or back ? These questions need to be addressed by the DEC ! You can tell winter is closing in LOL.
  19. I have a question. Does an inflatable friend have to wear a pfd ?
  20. I fished off the haystack on Sat. 8/15 . We managed a small laker first thing ( about 7 AM ) then nothing for 3 hours. Marked very few fish . Finally hooked up about 10 and landed a 29 # king . We were headed deeper and had the hit in 150 FOW . 1 more knock off with no one home and that was it for the day. Quit at 2 PM . Looks like the charters were targeting lakers . Talked to a guy from PA at the launch who told me he had his best day ever on lakers. Ho Hum, he can have the oil cans . But I guess if thats all that will cooperate then it's better than nothing. Kings are few and far between . I don't know what is up .
  21. It will make it much easier for the coasties to find your frozen corpse.
  22. All the reports I have seen say that the towel trick works on all riggers. FYI , Cannon has discontinued the Speed N Temp so the price you are paying is for a discontinued unit.
  23. Hi, I have used the uni trolls for years and i have experienced what you are referring to. You will have to remove the square (early model) or rectangular (late) cover on the opposite side of the rigger from the handle. Then back off handle to remove from the shaft , don't loose the ball bearings and washers and the cone shaped spring ( the grooves in the washers are supposed to be there) . You can the pull the shaft out from the cover side. The drag washer ( composite ) is between two metal washers, one has the grooves for the dogs the other is smooth on the circumference. Check these washers for any damage, if they show wear or grooving you will have to replace them. The drag washers will need replacing for sure (one per rigger).I have always ordered my parts from Cat. Gary's but there are other Cannon parts dealers out there. If you call them I am sure they can fix you up if you describe the parts you need. Don't forget to grease the bearings under the handle when you put it back together. Hope this helps.
  24. What Chinook said !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  25. There are many variables that determine how much cable is required to reach actual depth. I have seen times that i needed 160 ft of cable to reach 110 ft of depth. You may have been in a serious current. What was your boat speed compared to your down speed ? The larger the flasher you use , the more drag on the cable and more blow back .An 11 " flasher pulls much harder than an 8 " . There are times when you must use an 11-13 " flasher , and you just have to put up with more blow back. Your tangling problems ,and we've all had more tangles than we care to remember, may be due to your weight. Try using a different weight, yours may be wandering all over down there. I used 13# pancake weights for a while to minimize blowbacks and had amazing tangles. It turns out the weights were wandering back and forth many feet. Sometimes due to strong side currents acting on the large surfaces. I went back to balls with fins and my troubles decreased . What kind of set back are you running (distance from release to lure) ? The longer the set back the more chance of tangling in a current or turn. I have experimented for a lot of years and found that there is no hard and fast rule for the amount of cable needed to reach a certain depth. An uncoated cable with an 11" flasher seems to need an additional 15 % let out to reach target depth (with no down currents), that is ,to reach 100' of depth try letting out 115' of cable. lastly don't rely on sonar to give you the depth of your lure . It is merely telling you how far from the transducer your st up is . If your sonar shows your ball at 100' , it only means that it is 100' from the ducer , actual depth may only be 80'. Hope this helps a little , knowing you are not the only one dealing with all the variables.
